Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Well, we had this unusual bright light in the sky this afternoon and temps in the mid 70s. So I headed over to the Audubon Center for a little 4 mile flat lander hike. T-shirt (Under Armor), shorts, and microspikes. Just kidding. I left the microspikes at home, but I actually could have used them as there were significant (and slipper) stretches of ice on the trail. Fortunately, I did take the hiking poles, so I didn’t actually fall and bust my butt. It was great to feel a warm breeze and sunshine for the first time after a VERY long winter.

Idad - was a little concerned at first that your high intensity workout caused you to see a tunnel of a bright white light coming from the sky!

Good job on the 5K, fireandrain! To you as well on the 10 miles, C3Baker!

My husband and I walked 7 miles yesterday. No rattlesnakes, but dear, butterflies, and plants  I got in plenty of photo stop squats. We ended up walking through a rain storm with plastic ponchos. It was already hot and humid, but positively steamy under the ponchos. More rain tonight as we set out to walk. I ended up doing a few sprints instead of the planned walk.

Best part of the day was a nice 7 mile run this morning. Pace is definitely improving. Worst part of the day was filing taxes. Nice surprise gift of “Meb for Mortals” arrived courtesy of D. I’m looking forward to reading it.

iDad, sounds like a wonderful afternoon. I bet that sun felt terrific! PlantMom, I’d never survive in Florida. Humidity and I are not friends but your photo ops sound fabulous!

Congrats on your very good race results, fireandrain! C3Baker, sounds like a nice tuneup for the actual race - as MOWC said, you seem well prepared.

I have a picture of me with Meb at Las Vegas Rock n Roll Marathon in 2010. I treasure it. I just got the new book, too. I adore Meb. He is truly one of the good guys.

Sabaray- I bet you are getting really fast! Good training.

Rain all week here. I took sort of a rest day today- 2 easy miles this am. Wine and cheese after work with some lawyers so no more running.

I don’t think I’m fast at all but I am improving. While I enjoy the social aspects of a group run, there are times it’s a bit too social. Today I felt we were just dawdling along so I picked it up with another woman for the last three miles, I think we were around 9:30 which is still pretty pokey but an improvement. What does everyone think of the Higdon plans? I don’t want to do Galloway again. I don’t think the runs longer than 20 miles helped appreciably. The last 6 miles are hard no matter what.

Well, made it to Week 2 of C25k. I told my S (the one currently training for the Bklyn 1/2) that I started the program and he was all excited. When I said i was just at the beginning… run 1, walk 2…he jumped to the conclusion that I was talking miles…uh, no. Maybe someday! Hoped to get new shoes this weekend but never made it to the running store. Hopefully I will get there this week. My NB 750s are fine, but they’ve seen better days.

The right shoes will make a big difference. Nice work sticking with it.

Walk and a strength workout. Nice evening out listening to music.

9:30 is a pretty fast training pace! High on is excellent. Follow him on Facebook. Don’t do the advanced. It’s really tough. Intermediate is good. I don’t think you need runs longer than 18. 20 absolute max.

sabaray, 9:30 is not pokey at all! Excellent pace if you can run that fast for 7 miles.
I agree with MOfWC that 20 is plenty. I did 21 just to make sure I can run past the 20 mark.

4.1 miles on the Precor - it was 40 degrees and miserable outside, with wind and piercing rain. I am a pansy.

Tested the new oven. A true marvel of the German engineering. I can set it up on the delay timer so the dinner is ready the minute I hop off the treadmill. Love this feature!

I would like an oven like that, BB! Can it also prepare the food? That would be a true marvel!

The group generally runs around 11 - 12 which I find frustrating for a shorter run. I felt good when we finished yesterday but am going to try to consistently train at around 10. Consistency with pace is tough for me but I’m looking forward to the training. I just need to get this half over with!

Good morning. Not quite up to the hill yet given the plague and subsequent n ability to draw breath, but thought I’d share my sister-the-runner’s link with my running pals here on the thread…I’m sure you can relate

I hear ya, kmc. Mine hung on for a solid week. Never terribly sick, but enough that I was laid low. It was good to get outside yesterday.

BB- the oven sounds great!
Sabaray- I forget whether you use a heart rate monitor or not. That’s always a good excuse for picking it up and leaving your group, too (see you at the end, guys, I need to get my HR up for a bit!).

The simple pleasures… Our development is FINALLY getting the last paving of the streets now that construction is finished. It hasn’t been all chewed up or anything, but the manhole covers were higher than the pavement and there were some dents and puddle areas. Now there is this glorious coat of shiny black asphalt that is so smooth that my shoes squeak on it. It will get roughed up, but for now it’s some nice running. 3.4 miles this am in a break in the rain. Hope to do a little more after work.

Our company health and fitness week is this week, so we have speakers, fruit, activities and give-aways all week. We have a health fair today with some screenings, booths etc. The company 5K is tomorrow afternoon, but the course is a little convoluted since the police department is having a retreat (that’s scary, right?) and can’t support us this year so we can’t be on any roads. So we are winding around the run/walk path behind the building and our parking lot. To say it’s not competitive would be an understatement, but I appreciate that we do it. Everyone’s a winner!

I haven’t really participated in this thread, but I have been working to be healthier this past year. I brought down my added sugar level to the amount recommended by the WHO and switched to mostly fresh, non-processed foods. This caused me to lose 33 pounds in the past year, and I am back to my healthy weight from high school/college, when I was active!

Ultimately, I want to be not only healthy but athletic and actually build both upper and lower body strength, so I am trying to get out more as well as doing a push-up program. I just signed up for my work’s 3-mile corporate race in June!

@acollegestudent, WOW. That’s great. Did you restrict calories as well?

Nice to be back home and able to do my regular workouts. I have great admiration for all of you here who keep up training when you have to travel regularly for work. I found it difficult to keep to my work-out schedule while I was away for the last 2+ weeks. Had a great session today with my trainer–lots of weight work interspersed with cardio (running up/down stairs, battle ropes, etc), followed that with 40 minutes on the elliptical and another 30 on the thread mill.

Glad to hear you are both recouperating Idad and KMC. Congratulations to all the racers with great times and medals.

My shoulder is much better but still not 100%. H ( who hasn’t been wrong since 1975) says it’s tendinitis. Hate to admit it but my trainer said the same thing. She gave me some exercises.

Happy that there is only one tiny patch of snow remaining in my garden and the snow drops and crocus are out in force. Can’t wait to get to work out there.

Did speed work today, I’m not very speedy lol! 4.5 miles total.

Decided to take it a tad easier after 5 days straight and one rest day. Did 12.5 miles and don’t feel sore. Ultimate goal is to get to 20 miles per day. Can’t even comprehend how some of the posters here log in 50 miles in a day. Have to repeatedly tell myself “don’t compare yourself to others.” I just want to be healthy and strong. And in six months, back to my old weight, or at least close to it.
