Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

MOWC, glad to hear you’re back home, the move is taken care of, and you can get back into the running groove without that extra worry!

Abasket, yes, a short race this past weekend. It was fun. That, and an evening out listening to live music the night before. Spontaneous decision on both and I’m so glad I did it.

Sun, wind, clouds, rain, we’re having it all today, lol! Run done, check.

Got to the gym early today because I took my H to the airport for a 6:30 am flight! Ended up doing 60 minutes on the Cybex arc and another 30 minutes on the treadmill. After that, it was time for my personal training session. We did lots of balance work–walking lunges with weights, curtsey squats, and then side lunges on the TRX. Did running up/down stairs between these exercises. Later I did a couple of upper body exercises using the Bosu (turned upside down)–push ups and one-arm rows. Finished the session with a couple of 60 second planks. I felt pretty good and was really surprised when I check my Polar HRM and saw how many calories I burned.

Not home yet- at Philly airport. Congrats on the race, Deborah, and on a good weekend!

We weren’t planning to help with this move. Long story, and not for here, but there have been a lot of worries in our family this past year. I haven’t slept well in a long time.

My goodness Bromfield that’s a workout! Beast mode!

Feeling your pain, MOWC. If it doesn’t kill ya…

c3baker, the day is Friday! Warmed up today with a 4 mile walk with a friend. Just doing something makes such a difference and really motivates me to keep going. WOWC, I hope you can find a way to peace with whatever it is that’s causing worry in your family. I know the toll that state of being can take on one’s spirit. Your S and GF are lucky to have had your capable assistance, moving is a pain no matter the distance or # of bikes involved  Hope you arrive home soon.

Looks like everyone did a great job this weekend!! Kudos to all walkers, runners, bro fashion models, bike movers, and beast mode gym warriors!

I saw an airdyne for sale on a local FB garage sale site - felt like I should buy it for someone here!!!

Maybe idad would want to start a collection a la Wild Child?

This is what I get for mentioning bro, gym, and warriors in one post - side ads with bodybilders advertising some protein powders (?)!

Time to do some bodybuilding of my own… Dumbbells time!

To all treadmill users… BE CAREFUL!!!

http://news.yahoo.com/surveymonkey-ceo-died-head-trauma-exercise-accident-203446709.html

I have ran on treadmills in relatively fancy Mexico resorts. Let’s say they were the worst pieces of junk I’ve ever used.

Any of you seasonal pollen allergy sufferers? This season is horrible. The contact patches of my tires when I ride are coated yellow from the pollen on the roads! My eyes are ready to itch their way out of my head.

Bunsen, I saw that article yesterday…very sad…Of course, mch used the opportunity to point out that he will outlive all the fit folks to which I said sure but who will roll you over so you don’t get bed sores

On that note, surmounted the hill and got in a bit of aquajogging and n joyed it immensely, particularly compared to the rest of my day.

That treadmill accident scares me. My balance isn’t fabulous, and I’m careful even when I pull off my t-shirt after I warm up!

The Four Seasons Punta Mita is probably one of the highest end hotels in the region. It’s hard to imagine them having faulty equipment, but I guess anything is possible.

When I first heard of it, I wondered if he had some kind of heart arrhythmia that caused him to get dizzy or something.

As all you treadmill users probably know, virtually all treadmills come with a safety lanyard that clips to your clothing and if tugged detaches from its mount point on the console which immediately cuts the power to the motor. It’s amazing how many treadmills put into commercial service are configured to circumvent this safety device. I can’t even recall a specific instance of seeing one on a treadmill in a commercial gym, but if you go to the equipment stores, there’s the same treadmill on the floor with the lanyard so they are obviously available. I would suspect that they are removed by facilities to avoid the need to constantly replace them as they “walk off”. I wonder if such a device would have prevented this fatality.

I see those safety devices on just about every treadmill I’ve used, but I’ve never used them. This accident is definitely affecting my thinking about treadmills. I use them a lot when traveling and I’m often the only person in the room and often no one knows I’m there. If something happened to me, there’s a good chance no one would know. I’m not concerned about the gym I use at home; it’s never empty and there’s a staff. But if I’m using a treadmill in a small hotel fitness room, I might use that safely device.

The circumstances around his death have been kept pretty vague. He was gone for quite a long time (4 hours, I think) before he was found. He sounds like he was an amazing guy and this was not a good way to go.

I am definitely going to check the treadmills at my gym for these lanyards which sad to say, I didn’t know (or pay attention to if) they existed.

I thought about this as I started the treadmill for today’s C25K workout. I always use the safety tether, whether it’s my treadmill or one at a gym or hotel. I’m not sure how that might have helped however, if he fell off and hit his head. The belt would have stopped when he fell, but I suspect it’s how he fell and where he hit that caused the head trauma. Since my husband has a bad habit of leaving dumbbells all over the floor near our treadmill, I think that’s the first thing I need to address.

Did finish today’s two 8 minute segments reasonably comfortably and am now a little less apprehensive about the first 20 minute run on Friday. I have created what I think will be an effective playlist and I will take it one minute at a time, as they say. Once I get to the weeks where all the segments at 20-30 minutes I think I will head outdoors. I’m a little concerned though about going too fast without the control of the treadmill, and my breathing gets a little ragged when I go too fast. Any advice on keeping ones breathing steady and not labored?

I am not the most coordinated of folks…my fear is that I’ll end up on YouTube sliding off the back of a treadmill or some other awkward move. Very sad story.

I love my new Pilates studio - the trainer is excellent and I enjoy my workouts there so much more. We were talking about diet this morning and she mentioned a new book “Blue Zones Solution” that she was reading. It looks interesting based upon this article from NPR:

Runnersmom, what pace are you currently running on the treadmill???

In ANY run, the first few minutes - say the first 5 minutes for a 3 mile run - should be at a slow, comfortable pace. Through most of your run (unless you are already going quite fast) think JOGGING not RUNNING. It’s just semantics but mentally, jogging is what a lot of us do - look at the people you see jogging/running in your neighborhood - a good portion are just recreational runners (like me!) and going at a comfortable pace - faster is not better unless you’re trying to win a race!

Breathing is something that took time for me. I was always anxious starting a run for a long time - even these days I still just get a little anxious knowing what is ahead of me. If you see me run, you will literally see me breathing out short breaths - it helps me keep my pace and anxiousness down.
