Cardio (Cybex Arc) + weights. The Arc machine at this gym is the same brand, but a slightly different model than the one at the gym in MA. Feels very different for some reason.
@runnersmom - I can SO relate to your frustration. I know I get plenty of exercise, and I know it’s all good for me, but shedding those extra pounds is just incredibly difficult. I try to avoid carbs – I think I gain weight just looking at foods high in carbs. One thing I’d like to totally ban from our pantry is almonds – good in moderation, but way too hard to eat only a few. H likes them, and if they’re available, I end up eating them.
I did a 3.1 mile run with the running club last night. I had planned to do 5 miles, but it was 87 degrees and the park where we ran had no shade at all. I wasn’t feeling that great yesterday to begin with and I was feeling terrible while I was running so I quit at 3.1 miles. I was actually proud of myself for stopping because usually I am too bull-headed to stop even if I should. Anyway, I am feeling much better today. I might run tonight but I will definitely be doing more rock shoveling/hauling. Rain is expected all weekend so I need to take advantage of the dry weather.
runnersmom-I will be thinking of you tomorrow with your 20 minute run! You can do it! If you walked 3.94 hilly miles in an hour, that is a pretty good pace. I’m sure you will be able to do the 20 minute run no problem!
MOWC-congrats on the streak. It is really impressive and shows so much dedication and persistence.
iDad-your hike sounded wonderful. Crazy that it wasn’t very long ago that you were shoveling snow and now you need bug spray!
I’ve been struggling mightily with shin splints. I have a 10k at the end of this month and I was so discouraged. I almost posted here about when should you give up and decide that a race isn’t going to happen
Yesterday I had a bunch of errands to run and stopped in at one of our local running stores. We have 2, same chain but different locations. I usually go to one, it’s busy but more convenient. Yesterday I went to the other. Told them I was desperate and that I had this 10k coming up. (I said basically the same thing at their other store 10 days before). The guy who I am pretty sure is the owner was in. I told them what I run in and that I changed shoes recently but am still having problems. He thought that the shoes I had were old and had broken down even though I hadn’t run in them. That they break down just in the box. They talked me into a new pair of shoes, the same shoes I was wearing but the newest model.
Ran 5 miles, pain free! NO SHIN SPLINTS! It was not a great run. It’s our first really warm day and I struggled. I brought a handheld but ran out of water halfway through. Wanted to try for 6 miles but once I ran out of water, I shut it down and walked. But it felt great. I am very happy.
I’m really happy I went to the less busy store and annoyed that the busier store was not helpful.
Workout with my trainer–balance work (lunges with weights, walking lunges, lunges/squats on TRX)–ran up/down stairs in between. Also did box jumps, KB swings (two hand/one hand) and KB half get-ups plus we did upper body work–chest presses, lat pull down (machine) and rowing (machine). Those are the only two machines that she has me using–for allotter exercises I use free weights or TRX/KB. Had a half-hour before Pilates reformer class so I walked on the treadmill. Followed that with Pilates reformer. Tired, but feeling good. I’m planning a light workout tomorrow.
I was just getting started with my weight workout yesterday morning, went to pick up a 20lb dumbbell, and bam, back pain! Ouch. I think I pulled or strained a muscle. Now I can’t run. I’m very sad.
Deb, I was just about to ask you if it could be your shoes when you told your story!
It is worth going back to the other store to ask for some type of refund?
That would be concerning to know that shoes could break down without wear! Really? I’m going to our local running store’s tent sale next week - how old would a shoe need to be sitting in that box!!!
4.3 miles running, outside. Here at the beach it’s easy to just go out the door and start off – in Cambridge, not so much. One of the side benefits is I go fairly early – which means I get to come back and enjoy that first cup of coffee that much sooner! Foggy, cold start, but much warmer as the sun burned through.
Hope you feel better, blank mind.
Good luck with today’s run, runnersmom.
deb922 – interesting that new shoes may break down in the box. I had wanted to have my running “analyzed” for a shoe recommendation before leaving MA, but ran (LOL) out of time. I’ll do it the next time I’m up there.
I’m finally having some success losing weight now that I am running. I got my diet pretty well under control first & was losing a small amount of weight that way, but so slowly. Once I started running, I have not changed my diet & now the weight is coming off at a more satisfying rate. Another 5 pounds or so & I’ll hit my goal - feeling good about that!
Ouch, blankmind. That has happened to me several times – I lift something, or twist, or reach, and boom, I get a sharp pain in the lower back. I’ve found that sitting and lying made the pain worse – I had to stand and walk for the pain to go away.
I had a favorite pair of running shoes that were discontinued, and I bought a bunch before they totally vanished. I’ve worn them several years after purchase – they’ve sat in the box in my closet – and they’ve been just fine. No disintegration. In fact, I just bought 3 pairs of another style that I really like (paid $70 something instead of the $140 I paid in the fall) and plan on storing them until I need them. I am obviously a hoarder when it comes to sneakers I love.
Couldn’t let you guys down…DONE! I wouldn’t say it was easy, but when I increased the speed to 4mph it actually felt better. The benefits of a support team, even of the virtual variety, are amazing. I took many of your suggestions - created an upbeat 20 minute playlist, tried to keep my breathing consistent and just kept remembering that if I could have 3 kids without pain meds, I could certainly jog for 20 minutes! Hopefully next week’s 25 minute segment will go as smoothly. Thanks everyone, couldn’t have done it without you. Gertrude, good luck with the remaining 5, I’m rooting for you! Blankmind, it’s so hard to get into a rhythm and have to stop, but better your back should heal. Feel better and everyone, I hope it’s as nice where you are as it is here today.
@runnersmom - HOORAY!!! That was the biggest hurdle of the program & you’re over it. The rest is just easy steps up from what you have already done. You never have to wonder if you can run 20 minutes again, because now you know. How did it feel, by the way?
I did my 2 mile run this morning in the rain. I probably should have put it off, but I’m running another 5K this weekend on Mother’s Day & wanted to keep to my schedule. Really, what’s the difference if you come home wet because you’re sweaty or wet because it rained? Aside from my sloshy feet, I figured it didn’t matter.
Gertrude, it felt hard but good, if that makes any sense. There were times when I found myself thinking that no one would be the wiser if I stopped or walked, but then I would settle my breathing and keep going. I realize that sounds pathetic, but it’s been a long time since I challenged myself physically in that way. As evidenced by yesterday, I can pretty much walk forever, regardless of the terrain, but when I start running my breathing gets all wonky and uncomfortable. Happy to have done it, happy to be done!
Beautiful day here–went for a 3.2 mile hike with a friend who refuses to walk on the roads. We walked on a trail right down the road from her house–part of it circled the town pond. I’ve lived here for over 30 years and had never been on that side of the pond! There were a couple of hills to get over before we got down by the pond–surprised that my heart rate was elevated.
Good job Gertrude–10 pounds is great. Idad–hope your back mends quickly. CBB–enjoy the beach.
Congrats to Gertrude and runnersmom! Blankmind- I hope you recover quickly. NOT fun!
Midsoles can deteriorate if shoes sit for too long, but I haven’t really had that happen with unworn shoes in a box in many years. The materials have improved a lot. I wonder if the shoes were just duds? It can happen- just a failure in the midsole material for some reason.
Early meeting today so did 3.1 miles pretty early. It has been perfect morning running weather- 57, clear, low humidity. The afternoons are unseasonably hot right now.
