I thought it was crazy also when it was suggested that my shoes lost their cushioning without being worn. All I know is that the new shoes don’t give me shin splints. And the others did.
I pronate so I have sturdy cushioned shoes, that may be the difference. Although my D claimed she bought new shoes recently and she got shin splints from them, so I do wonder.
Gertrude, raising a glass of sparkly no calorie water to those 10 pounds gone!! Woohoo!
Runnersmom, I FULLY can relate to that idea that no one will know/care that you stopped and walked. And you know what? It’s perfectly fine to do if you need to! BUT on this 20 minute run, you needed the victory of NOT walking - and you achieved that! The breathing will work itself out over time. Were you outside!!
Blankmind, fingers crossed that this would go away quickly.
MOfWC, congrats in your streak! 202 days - wow, time flies so fast when you are not injured, doesn’t it?!
Deb - that is weird. Shoes don’t fall apart so quickly, unless they are really poorly made. Synthetics can disintegrate simply because of oxidation, but it usually takes a while for this to happen, unless the materials were pretty cheap and crappy to begin with.
Lifting weights at 10:00 at night when I have to get up at 6 the next morning, ugh, not recommended. Off this morning to ride my bike club’s annual QUAD county Metric Century Ride. 500 riders, 68 miles of hills in Bucks, Montgomery, Berks and Lehigh Counties PA. Should be a blast. What should be really interesting is that one township manager detests bicyclists on the roads and when was forced to back down from requiring a $300 permit to cross the township, vowed to issue tickets to bicyclists who don’t conform to her misinformed version of the law regarding cyclists on public roads. Will be carrying the relevant sections of the PA Vehicle Code and some business cards (my lawyer ones, not my CPT ones, lol) with me :).
7 very humid miles in this morning but nice to get it out of the way. Good to get some back to back longer runs in. Michael, enjoy your ride! Hope you don’t need those lawyer cards!
What points of law is she getting wrong? Can’t wait for a follow up report.
@Blankmind, I’ve just recently recovered from a bad lower back injury that kept me off the bike for many weeks, and off work for even longer (lots of pushing heavy stretchers around the unit, lots of bending over to pick up patients’ belongings from under their stretcher and putting it in a bedside table).
Best wishes for your full recovery. Don’t bend over - learn the “golf bend,” no heavy lifting, use good body mechanics, try heat or cold, whichever works best for you, etc. You have my sympathies.
Slept in just a tad but still got to the bike trail by 7:30 and did an hour, trying to beat the rain. We’ve had lots of severe weather in Texas this week (many tornadoes unfortunately) and they are predicting the worst of it this weekend. Dallas has dodged the bullet for the most part, so crossing my fingers for some nice rain but no destructive elements.
Eventful 10 mile run. I was doing really well- deliberately slow and comfortable on the first warm morning. Got to 6 miles and absolutely went down like a rock. I tripped on the stupid wooden footbridge where I have fallen before. A group of runners ran to me- my temple was pouring blood. One got a little towel and stopped the bleeding. Knee, shoulder and elbow bruised and scraped. Finished the run.
I tried to pretend my head was ok, but I texted pics to the medical folks in my family and they said I needed to go to the clinic. My Dr. Running Friend who directs The Monkey was working today so I headed over. He cleaned it up and put glue on it. They try to avoid stitches on face wounds if possible. I’m OK, but it’s frustrating to fall like that. It was a nice morning, though. I got blood all over my running dress, but it rinsed right out.
I’m glad you’re not in the hospital! Head wounds are the worst and glad you got checked out. We all know the important part - you finished the run AND your dress will run again another day.
Now we have to get together so I can see your war wound, MOWC. Hope your head is feeling okay and glad to hear your dress survived the incident. Michael, I hope you fare as well as MOWC’s outfit.
Ran yesterday, walk today & with any luck at all a strength workout at some point this afternoon. Probably should create my own luck, lol.
Aww… MOWC. Falls are the worst. I’ve come home with blood on my face twice – once from a neighborhood walk and once from a hike (Mt. Monadnock). Makes you feel like such an idiot, but it’s just amazing how you can go down in a heap in an instant.
5K hilly neighborhood walk on a warm sunny afternoon. Full bro’ cap to work on my tan a little bit.
From the Murphy’s Law Dept… I hike all over New Hampshire and never get a stone in my boots. But, a walk around paved streets in running shoes and I’m limping home with two annoying stones in one shoe and one in the other!
in the good news (?) column, I finally have a heart rate strap that works again! I have four or five premium soft straps that are all completely unreliable and useless. I can’t get any of them to last more than 6 to 8 months. So, I put a new battery in my original hard plastic heart rate monitor strap that came with my original Garmin, synched it up, and it worked perfectly for my entire walk.
I’m done with the soft straps. I could probably sweet talk Garmin into sending me a sixth one, but why bother?
Ouch, MoWC. That sounds pretty bad. Here’s to a fast recovery.
Did a nice hour and half bike ride, 17+ miles. Weatherman was off today – instead of cloudy overcast skies, it was sunny and brilliant. But windy – biking into a head wind is exhausting.
Oh no, MOWC! Glad you weren’t hurt too seriously. A fall like that really puts a crimp in enjoying a distance event. We had a crash on our ride today. I was riding with 7 experienced racers (all women, lucky me ), and while climbing a hill, a pack of inexperienced riders swarmed all over the line, forcing one of our riders to swerve to the left to avoid getting hit and crashing, only to hit a major league rut in the road, causing her to crash anyway. Banged up knee and elbow but fortunately no broken collarbone (the most frequent bicycling related fracture). We were only 6 miles into the ride but she continued on for the remaining 62.
Nrdsb4, the laws concerning bikes on the road vary from state to state. Pennsylvania law essential gives bicyclists the same rights, privileges and responsibilities as motor vehicle operators. Sections of the Motor Vehicle Code provide that bicyclists can ride in the lane and only need move to the right to allow cars to pass where it is reasonable and safe to do so. Drivers must give bicyclists 4 feet of clearance when passing and may cross a solid medial line and drive in the oncoming lane when necessary and safe to do so. If a car can’t give the cyclist 4 feet of clearance, the car can’t pass; cars are also prohibited from turning in front of a bicyclist in a manner that cuts the cyclist off. The township manager was of the belief that cyclists must ride as far to the right as possible and not in the lane. This is not only incorrect but is also dangerous to cyclists because cars will try to squeeze by in the lane which is usually not wide enough to give the cyclist room to maneuver and provide 4 feet clearance for passing. It’s far safer for cyclists to ride in the lane so cars are not tempted to squeeze by which creates a risk of clipping the rider with a mirror and instead will pull well into the oncoming lane thereby giving the cyclist 4 feet clearance.
^^^Sounds like grouchy lady let you guys do your thing without harassment?
Amazing to ride so far. To me it’s no different than running a marathon. Something I don’t think I would ever want to train for, but something to admire for sure in others who are up to it!
