The Oiselle pants come in crazy awesome colors!!!

Have been missing my once or twice a week “class” - spinning or mixed cardio class - but work has been busier and there are less class offerings in the summer. But it was prime outdoor weather for running so out I went. Either my RunKeeper was on high speed or I was - my running average tonight was a minute faster than usual!

Finally cooled off here - I had no excuses this morning. 3.26 miles. Now to walk the pups!

Kerry’s issue is not so much age as the fact that he has an artificial hip. And, the fracture from the bike accident is apparently a fracture to the area around the replaced hip. Not a run of the mill broken leg. Not good. My assumption is that he may well have gotten another new hip yesterday.

Not saying that he should or shouldn’t be riding bikes and where or how he rides them, but I do think we all have to take account potential risks of damage to artificial hips, replacement knees, etc. It’s a fine line to walk (so to speak) to stay active but minimize risk of catastrophic injury.

What a stupid remark by Rush - “what is a 71 yo doing on a bike.” We have a family friend in his eighties who does bike trips in Europe. More power to him. I absolutely will be riding bikes and working out and being active in my 60s and 70s and God willing 80s and 90s. We have a little running joke in my family that the kids will call for H’s 100th birthday and he’ll say - can I call you back later, I’m going for a bike ride.

What a stupid man. That’s why he’s the size of a house.

Here is what I posted on facebook:

Today is National Running Day. I was able to get out before work for a 3 mile run. Last year at this time I was on crutches with a running injury, so I am grateful to be running! I am older and slower, but still appreciative of what running has brought to my life. I have met so many wonderful people, many who are still in my life. I have traveled to races all over the country (and in Canada), spent time running with my kids and cheering for them at races and celebrated my own accomplishments over the years. There have certainly been failures, but I finally learned that these failures aren’t as important as I used to think. I have used my running as a motivation, a social tool, a drug and a means to health and fitness. Thank you, Running!

Love it!! ^^^^

Thanks for the reminder of the day. Probably a better one to celebrate than “National Donut Day” - which I think is coming up later this week…

Hope you are feeling better today MOWC.

^^^I love this!

I have a 5K run with my work today!

Thanks, abasket and acollegestudent. I’m feeling better, but not 100%. I stopped to rest a couple of times during the run, but I did OK.

My daughter’s post was better than mine.

Running has given me time with my mother and a group of friends that spans the globe. Running has given me space for meditation and prayer, time in nature, time when it’s just me and the road - no phone, no distractions. Running has given me an appreciation for my body, not for how it looks, but for what it’s able to do. Running has taught me how to embrace and breathe through suffering, because it never lasts forever. Paradoxically, running has given me swimming and cycling. So on this National Running Day, I say ‪#‎thankyourunning‬.

These words - they mean a lot don’t they?

As it turned out, today was one of my runnings days anyway – nice coincidence that it’s also National Running Day! I did 5.08 miles. Today, and every day, I’m thankful for my good health and the ability to run. I’ve got some decent genes behind me, though. My father is 87 – although he has quit running in favor of walking, he still goes downhill skiing, and plays golf.

Awesome! Will run tonight.

Did a serious weight routine yesterday. I need to clear the junk out of the exercise room to make space for the pull up contraption! I’m determined to get more muscles in the right places to be able to do them. At this point, vanity is not an issue - my arms and back look pretty muscular (was even “recruited” by a rowing group in HI, lol), but they can’t lift my body up and down. So there’s the goal.

@BunsenBurner I have the exact same goal and working on it right now as well! For me, it also has nothing to do with looks - I just want to be strong and fit  I used to have pretty much no upper body strength, and I have been doing a program where I was finally able to do a push-up. I am staying on that same program to do 100 push-ups.

Being able to do a pull-up is definitely the dream!

Hello all. I’m still checking in when I can, and I miss spending time reading and posting more, but I’ve been prioritizing some other things here right now. Less running right now than many of you. A lot of walking, a little bicycling, up and down stairs and shuffling boxes currently. Finally going through some of what is in storage. Realizing I should have started in on this sooner. Wishing you all well.

Happy #NationalRunningDay Deb T! And #walkingday, #biking and #stairclimbing!

MOWC-I love your National Running Day post. And I really love your daughter’s post. Everything she wrote really resonates with me (except the part about running with my mom - never happened!) and she was able to articulate those thoughts beautifully. As well as she writes, I’ll bet she is a terrific preacher.

iDad-you are so right about staying active but being mindful of minimizing risk. I have a very active friend in her early 60s with 2 replaced knees and 1 replaced hip. She needs to have the other hip replaced but is putting it off. She is still very active with biking and swimming but is also very careful to not over-do things.

I’ll be running 6 miles tonight to celebrate National Running Day. Our running club is participating in an event but it is too far away for us to be able to get there in time after work. So we’ll do our own thing but will definitely get the miles in.

Thanks, C3B. I agree about minimizing risk. That’s why I did so much more running on the treadmill this past winter (and even now) than I ever have. I used to head out in the dark no matter what- with a headlamp- but still dark. Now if it’s dark or at all slippery, I tend to stay inside.

Did a 1.5 hour bike ride this morning because I got all caught up in an audio book I was listening to. I’m kind of tired now!

I, too, hope to be active and still riding when I’m in my seventies and beyond.

QUESTION:

Okay, I saw a strange contraption today on the bike trail:

It looked kind of like an eliptical machine on wheels. Half eliptical, half bicycle. It looked to be a good workout, and something very different! Anyone know what this is?

Elliptigo! Meb uses it! http://www.elliptigo.com/

Yes, my dream bike -Elliptigo!

@sabaray, yes! That’s what I saw! Thanks for the link.

DH will only do eliptical. I wonder if I could get him to fall in love with this and I could share it to cross train.
