Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

sabaray, it really is tough to figure out the right balance. When you say you were eating low carb before, what does that really mean? How many gms of carbs were you eating, from what sources and what % of your daily dietary intake did they comprise? Same questions on the current level of carbs you are eating that you consider to be “too high”. And while I am of the view that tracking weight is an important metric to keeping a person honest about their nutritional plan, it’s definitely not the only metric I would look at. As you note, exercise can add muscle which weighs more than fat. Have you considered having your body composition tested? That would give you the best indication of whether your increased carbs have taken you in a direction you don’t want to go. If you clothes aren’t any tighter and over time your % fat vs lean muscle improves, and you are happy with your appearance, then weight may become less significant to you.

“Thanks, BB, although at this point I’m not at all sure I have it in me to run one at 62-3!”

Well, you have plenty of time - 3 decades - to train!

Did. Not. Want. To. Exercise. Tonight.

But thanks to Mr. B who led by example, I put on my running shoes and joined him in the exercise room. 3.5 miles on the tteadmill - ok, not great, but better than 0.

Rush Limbaugh says John Kerry is too old to be riding a bicycle.

I think maybe Rush ought to give it a try…might help him with his obesity problem.

Legs are sore from one and a half hour ride yesterday. :frowning:

I will probably just do some upper body resistance work.

Nrdsb4, unfortunately all the bike riding in the world won’t do anything for the fat between his ears.

^^^^^LOL! Yeah, you’re surely right.

Maybe Rush should do a little more research. Kerry is more than your average cyclist: http://www.wsj.com/articles/john-kerry-not-your-average-cyclist-1433105684

71 year old cyclists and 92 year marathoners should get back to the shuffle board courts. Older folks have no business with vigorous activity!

My guess is that Kerry’s physical age is lower than Rush’s — https://www.worldfitnesslevel.org/?group=xxyeeslohf#/
I’m under 20!

John Kerry’s has a home in the same place as our vacation place. Whenever Kerry is there (house is right on the water and near a popular local beach) he’s out windsurfing or bicycling or sailing. I’ve seen him numerous times. Kerry isn’t a couch potato; seems like the fall was just an accident.

Now there’s a fun “quiz” Ohiopublic! You’re younger than me - I went from actual age of double 5’s - 55 to a fitness level of double 3’s - 33 ! I’ll take it (and, I think that I’m probably in better physical shape than at 33 when I had a 1 and four year old!

I didn’t realize Kerry is 6’4"! We have 2 cyclist friends here who are over 6’8" and the logistics of the bike get difficult. The bikes are HUGE!!!

I seem to have a very mild touch of something- some lower GI stuff and just generally weak. Still at work (no choice) and not feeling too bad, but could only run 2 miles yesterday morning on the treadmill- very slow and HR was high so I bailed on an afternoon run. Stayed inside to avoid what we call in running “disaster pants”. This morning I stayed in bed until too late to do anything but the streak mile (1.3 actually). Still feel pretty weak, but not as bad as yesterday. Good tapering for the half marathon this weekend! I so rarely get sick with anything that it throws me a little, and this is very mild.

Cybex Arc + weights this morning. Usually Tuesday means 18 holes of golf, but not in this weather! We really need the rain, though, so I’m not complaining too much. Although, if Mother Nature could turn up the heat a tad, that would be nice. It’s 48 degrees here this morning. Last night H built a fire, even though we had cleaned out the fireplace for the season.

Absolutely, BB! IMO, anything is better than nothing.

Thanks, CBBBlinker.

Hope you are back to normal by the weekend or better yet, by tonight, MOfWC!

I got behind on posts but caught up here this afternoon. It is great to read about everyone’s activities and positive encouragement for one another. Yesterday was a good 5 mile run after work. Apparently tomorrow is National Running Day, our running club is participating in an event but it is too far away for us to get there on time after work so we will probably just do a good run at home.

I need to get back to the gym. I decided I did not like the new place I started working out at so I will be going back to the previous gym starting on Monday. I won’t lie - I’m not looking forward to a killer workout with the trainer after taking a couple weeks off. Better to get back at it now than to let a couple weeks turn into a couple months, though!

Gear review here. These are not cheap, but I think Oiselle is giving Lulu a run for their (significant) money these days. These track pants are great. Mine came yesterday in the bright pink. I have several pairs of the Roga shorts, which I really like. They are very light weight and flattering. I can wear a 4 or a 6 in the shorts, and I ordered a 4 in the pants and they are perfect. 2 zippered pockets and zippered leg openings. Soft fabric wide waistband, so no muffin top. Great for just a little layer of warmth before/after running (or running, for that matter) and easy to pack.

Those are cute pants. Somehow I can’t imagine you having a muffin top, MOWC!

Went to Pilates reformer class after work tonight - not nearly as tough as working one on one. Great class though! It’s been nice having a few days off from running but I’ll be back at it tomorrow. I think. It was cold, rainy and foggy here this morning - hard to roll out of bed for that.

Unfortunately, as I have aged, there is some stuff around the middle that can get squeezed up by the wrong waistbands. That’s why Bunsen and I like the Lulu crops/capris called WunderUnders!

I felt enough better to do 3.7 tonight on the dreadmill for a 5 mile day. Not fast, and still not feeling 100%, but I’m glad to get it done because I want to taper into this half marathon. They are putting out information about one of the hills saying “You will get over it- by running, walking or crawling…” I ran this race (inaugural at the time) 2 years ago but the course was in reverse. It was really tough. I’m not sure it’s easier reversed, but the biggest hill comes earlier.

I just got a pair of the crops so add me to the fan club!

Hope you continue to feel better. I think I’d like getting the biggest hill over first as well.

Exactly. Sigh. Having no muffin top after a certain age requires some clothes strategery. Those Oiselle pants look awesome.
