Last night we did a trail run with the running club. We had some pretty major hills which I’m not used to, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Our numbers were down for the run, though, and I think the 91 degree weather was part of it. Our leader wasn’t able to attend - she is feeling the effects of dehydration after doing a 100K trail run over the weekend and then additional training runs on Mon and Tues with our temps in the 90s. I can’t even begin to imagine! She does lots of the ultra marathons - just crazy!
MOWC-wow, your dehydration sounds pretty severe. The continued weight loss is dramatic. I hope you’re able to get your fluid levels back up and start feeling like yourself again.
iDad-your hikes sound fabulous. I think you live in such a gorgeous area. Those mosquitos are nasty, though!
fireandrain-you are so right. It takes no time at all to gain back a couple pounds that take forever to lose!
Thanks, C3B. I really don’t feel that bad until I run. I am a little tired on the stairs here at work, but nothing terrible. It’s all very odd. I’m sure it will resolve.
I think I will try to drink water when I get up during the night. I generally don’t because I make enough bathroom trips anyway!
MOfWC, could your dehydration issues be caused by Forteo? Dehydration has been reported as one of the side effects. It could be that the combo of Forteo and sudden increase in temperatures brought it on.
The weather has not cooperated with me lately! Too hot, too humid, too soon. Will see if I can get a run in tonight. I need to shake the sinful thoughts about that Euro cake out of my head! (The dang frozen cake was purchased last weekend and is awaiting Father’s Day - we eat some and the send the leftovers home with the kids, lol).
MOWC, are you sure you are hydrating enough? As you know, I’ve been struggling with hydration issues because while I may “feel” that I’m taking in enough water, my intake has not been adequate to replace what I lose from training. What I’ve started doing is weighing myself before and after intense exercise to determine weight change due to water loss and then I know how much I have to drink just to replace the water I lost due to the training session. As I posted a little while back, this became quite salient to me when I did a 66 mile ride a couple of weeks ago, cramped for the last 13 miles and at the end discovered that notwithstanding having consumed 106 oz of water during the ride, I was still 4 lbs lighter at the end than I was at the beginning. That’s about 2 quarts of additional water and my subjective “feelings” that I was drinking plenty during and post ride would never had led me to realize just how depleted I was. I’m making weighing myself before and after my rides SOP to help make sure I’m drinking enough. It’s tough to drink enough and I’ve now started keeping a 24 oz water bottle by the side of my bed so that I can drink on demand throughout the night.
I think it’s a combination of dehydrating overnight and maybe low sodium or other electrolytes. These have been really short runs. I took a salt capsule tonight and also an electrolyte drink (no sugar). I’ll try again in the morning to see how I do.
Bunsen- that’s interesting about the Forteo. Last summer I didn’t run until mid August so didn’t have the heat/Forteo combo. I did fine on Saturday in the race, though.
Ran 3.4 miles from work to home. This was probably my hardest run since I have re-started running. It was just so
HOT! 89-90 degrees, feeling like 94. No wind. Just heat baking me. I am not a fan of heat as it is (I actually like seasons and winter and snow). But I really felt like I accomplished something, because I pushed through!
Went to do a ride with my local club last night and as I was loading the bike on the roof rack, finally figured out why my movement patterns in loading the bike on the rear facing racks on my current car so often results in my departing with my front wheel still leaning against my wife’s car which is to the left of my car. It was an “aha” moment and I felt so damn smart to have figured it out. Arrived at the ride to discover that I had done it once again! Another “aha” moment, this time about what an idiot I am lol. Drove home and ended up taking my cross bike out on local trails for an hour and a half. Came home hot, dirty and tired so it was all ok.
Had my doctor’s appointment and blood work done. Waiting with bated breath for results.
On the good side, I’ve lost 16 pounds since April 9, and he decided to cut my blood pressure med in half since I’m having the light headedness after getting up from chairs. BP was 116/60, and he said if I continue everything I’m doing, it’s likely that I can get off the med entirely. That would be great!
Michael- that’s pretty funny, really. There’s so much gear involved it’s hard to remember everything, but the wheel is sort of a “must have”.
Nrdsb4- We need multiple 5 pound parties for you! That’s terrific. Congratulations.
Not a great result this morning, but not as bad as the last 2 days. HR still higher than it should be and I am running very, very slowly. I’m trying to go slow, but it still feels hard and I’m just not normal. I’ll do more salt today and more electrolytes. 3.2 miles done.
Nrdsb4, that is awesome! Hope the other numbers are dropping, too.
acollegestudent, great job. Summer running can be a challenge for folks who dont take heat well. Wear a light hat, sunglasses, and cover yourself with sunblock! Oh, and bring water, even for short runs.
Michael, I had a laugh. Oh stuff we forget…
MOfWC, it sounds like you are on the right track. From what I read, Forteo can create some sort of electrolyte disbalance in some people, even though it mostly affects Ca 2+ levels. Oh well, medicine is such an imprecise science, so trial and error is a faster way than running a zillion tests.
Nrdsb4, those are great results! You will be amazed at the impact the weight loss will have on your cycling. I know the cardio exercise is part of your routine; are you also doing any resistence training?
I’m impressed by the accomplishments, heath-wise, achieved by those here. I’m still plodding along, revisiting my 20 minute runs on the C25K. Today was easier and I was able to up the pace comfortably to 4mph. On the weight front I’m down 4.4 pounds and hope to report that 5lb accomplishment next week. Tracking has helped a lot, but the weight seems to fluctuate daily. I’m trying to moderate my BP and rising A1C, so we’ll see what the next set of blood work looks like given my new exercise and diet regime. Good weekend all!
I had a good session with the trainer last night. I had not been happy with the person I was working with (although she was a good trainer she was very negative and always complaining, just not very motivating) so I switched gyms. The new place wasn’t a good fit - I didn’t feel that I was getting enough of a workout. So I am back to my original gym but now working with H’s trainer. It was a really good session and I think this will be a good fit. I ran home from the gym, just 4 miles, but I was wiped out when I got home. I think we are all struggling to acclimate to the heat and humidity again!
Nrdsb4-congrats on the great BP numbers! You are doing fantastic with the weight loss, you must be really happy with your progress. Here’s hoping for good news when the bloodwork results come in!
Michael-Haha, great story! Gotta love those “aha” moments!
BB-that cake sounds really tempting! And you still have another week to wait!
My last moment like that was packing up for three days of hiking and camping, only to arrive in the White Mountains and remember that I had left the detachable drinking tube for my water reservoir hanging by its magnet on the door of the fridge. That meant a trip to the local outdoor store where the cheapest option for a drinking tube was to buy an entire 1.5 liter mini-Camelback to the tune of about $40. So I now have three drink reservoirs and three drinking tubes…
I’ve learned to stop before I start the car to leave home and go through a mental inventory. I also stick a drink tube in the backpack the night before when I put the reservoir in the freezer.
Basement for me. Here’s a tip… if you are doing chinups, don’t take a two or three month break from them!
My chin up bar had been pressed into service as an emergency winter coat rack as the coat closet was out of commission. I finally moved the winter coats (they don’t need to be accessible in June – at least not often). So I could put the chinups and the rear foot elevated split squats back in my workout.
The split squats were OK (intentionally light with just 40 lbs), but the chin ups were a bear. Not good. I did three very short sets and will have to build back up. I had a feeling it was going to be like that.
Second trainer workout of the week for me on Thursday. Did a 6.7 mi. walk today–conservation land loop of 5 mi. plus walk to and from. Got out before it was too hot. Tomorrow, I signed up for a spinning class. Thinking it might be difficult because like Idad and chin-ups, I haven’t been in a spinning class for a long time!
Upper body routine tonight. 4sets incline benches, 3 sets cable flys, 3 sets lat pull downs, 3 sets db side and front raises combo, 3 sets bicep curl bar, 3 sets chin ups and 3 sets dips. Followed by 10 oz sockeye salmon. Yum! Gonna rain tomorrow so I think I’ll spin for an hour and then do an hour of db and body weight core and lower body mobility with a lot of abs thrown in. Also gonna go shopping with my contractor to buy the galvanized pipes for my playground. All the frame work has been pre-fab’d and just needs to be assembled with the pipes. It’s getting close to being up and ready for outdoor fun!
