Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

If one is diligent with data management and does not pay attention to daily swings, daily weigh ins can be used to calculate weekly moving average, a more meaningful number. Even with that, there will be spikes (e.g., in my case, I never fail to gain 2-3 lb overnight before a certain monthly event due to water retention).

Feeling a little sorry for myself. Did a 3 mile walk. Unfortunately, I don’t enjoy walking as exercise. I like walking WITH someone just to take a walk, but as exercise it just doesn’t do it for me. I thought I was going to get caught in the rain, but it just sprinkled. I suspect H got dumped on out on his bike ride.

The gas bubble in my eye is now about 50%, which means I have a wavy line halfway down my eye that looks like waves in an ocean with cloudiness (can’t see through it except for some colors) below the line and some (not great) vision above the line. Even though I can run once the bubble dissolves, I can’t wear my contact lens in that eye for at least 3 more weeks (until my next appointment), so I don’t know how I’m going to see to run. I’ll try it with the one lens, but I may be stuck with the treadmill because I’m afraid of falling. We’ll see. I’m going to try to drive today. I am allowed to drive, and plenty of people drive with one eye, but it scares me.

So- to feel better, I ordered up a pair of Hoka Clifton 2s with a 20% off coupon from RoadRunnerSports. Since I needed more running shoes and all…(not)

I’m such a data nerd - I have my last 7 months of daily weights on an excel spreadsheet & graphed with a trendline. As long as that trendline is angled downward, I’ll be happy, at least until I reach my goal weight, then it can straighten out.

In other news, I just tried out the new Galloway recommendations that were mentioned here a couple days ago. My old ratio was 3 min / 1 min, so today I tried 1.5 min / 30 sec. What a difference! The 30 second break is not long enough for my heart rate & breathing to drop, so it feels like you are just running the whole time. My leg muscles & tendons did feel like they got a break though. I like it!

MOWC, nothing like a little retail therapy when your feeling down! I know how frustrating this is for you and can only imagine how scary it is. Going back and reading your prior posts about your eyes and catching up to where you are today, your progress has been steady! Hang in there!

Notwithstanding my philosophy about scales and weight, I’m really a data nerd too. Performance lab testing, wattage training, full blown lipid panels etc. and it’s not enough for me to have professional grade skin fold calipers for body fat measurements. Now I’ve become entranced with ultrasound body composition measurements that not only give you body composition metrics but also ultrasound image graphs of bone/muscle/fat regions and measurements! And the best thing is there are units available that are affordable with a little budgeting and saving :).

Torrential rain last night so no group run this am - potential for flash flooding in the area we do long runs and the ongoing rain at 4:30 am meant no go. So headed to the gym and hit the treadmill for 6 miles - that’s all I could stand.

I used to weigh and record my weight daily but am no longer doing that. I weighed and took my measurements at the beginning of June and will repeat on July 1 to see how it’s going.

Hope your vision continues to improve, MOWC. I’d keep up the retail therapy!

Sabaray, please send some of that rain here!! We desperately need it in Seattle.

Ran 11 miles on the Beer Trail this morning. Phew. It was already 70 degrees when I started around 9:30 and got to 80 when I was done. Ouch. I decided to keep my singlet on for the sake of others, so I suffered more than I should have. Scary temperatures! Good practice for my upcoming run. Saw an ambulance on the trail - it looked like a lady fainted and fell off her bike. Double ouch. When I ran past the ambulance, paramedics were checking he BP; she looked somewhat disoriented but otherwise ok. When Mr B rode past them, he saw her getting her knee bandaged. Hope she is going to be ok.

That is really warm for your area, Bunsen! Good distance! You have ramped up fast.

Thanks, all. I went into Lulu to take back the size of the striped bra that I wasn’t going to keep and assured H that I would be right back with my credit. Well, I grabbed a tank top while I was in there, but still got $4.37 refund. I DID intend to just return the extra bra…

I drove a little, but let H take over. I think I can do it OK, but if I don’t have to, I’ll pass.

Good job, MOfWC, both with your recovery and the bra return. I wore my striped one today and loved it. Size 6 was perfect (34C).

This weather is indeed something else… My cats are miserable. They stretch their little bodies on the hardwood floors in their desperate attempts to keep themselves cool.

The humidity is unreal. I have a 70 pint dehumidifier in my studio and even with central air, the dehumidifier is almost running non-stop and I need to dump the bucket every day. Our cats are lounging on the cool tile floor of the foyer by our front door.

I am so glad I went for a longish run yesterday. The dry thunderstorms we are having today do not bode well for outdoor activities. I also pleasantly discovered that I am not as much out of shape as I thought I was. I guess city walking kept me in decent cardio shape.

We had a late Father’s Day celebration last night. The eurocake is gone, thank heavens. Today is rest and some light gardening activity.

Much nicer day here today - lower humidity and a cool breeze, so Mr. Sabaray and I headed to the park with the pups. We got in a nice walk that everyone enjoyed. Headed to mat class later this afternoon.

Really nice day here, too. It was 61 degrees and low humidity early this morning. I drove (survived with 1 eye driving) to the path and walked 4 miles at 17:30 pace. Today’s sing out long song was “There’s a bug in my Margarita.”

Went over to the pool and got some sun and dipped in the water and moved my legs a little bit. Doc said no aquajogging, but I decided he thought I was going to run along the bottom. My head moves less with aquajogging than walking (and head bouncing is the issue), so I think it would be OK, but I didn’t do it since I already walked.

I’m looking at the forecast and not liking what I’m seeing: mid to high 90s by the weekend. Yikes. Cooler and nicer today, but very humid. I wish it would rain a bit. Off to water the fruit trees, which I rarely have to do. They need water!

Had a tutorial today on using my new skin fold calipers with a friend who’s been a trainer for 25 years and has the same pair as I bought. She measured by body fat with mine and then I used them on her. My measurement was .8% higher than a year and a half ago. With the vagaries of day of the week, time of day, hydration levels and using mine vs hers (which was used the last time), that’s really no significant change at all. Skin fold body fat measurement is a good tool as long as you recognize its limitations. It’s best to use it as a relative measurement to track change over time instead of an absolute measure, and even then, you have to control for extrinsic variables as well as operator technique.

What - you didn’t get a hydrostatic dunk tank??

Actually, if I turn off my basement dehumidifier, in a few days I think I would have one!

I can use a dunk tank here!! This heat and humidity have been unbearable.

My yard waste can is full of weeds. Amazingly, the suckers were doing quite well despite not being watered for two weeks.

Took my run/walk outside for the first time today. I headed to the HS track because I wanted an accurate control for distance etc. I went 4 miles on the track (16 laps via the mile markers on a 400 meter track), but my Fitbit says my workout was only 2.56 miles. Clearly, it needs to be recalibrated. In any case, I did the first two miles, 1/4 running, 1/4 walking and then walked the last two miles. This was so much harder than running on my treadmill. I need to learn to control my breathing correctly in fresh air. It was cool, so bearable to be outside at 9am, but I’m wondering how long it ill take me to work up to my 30 minutes of running outside.

Even knowing it was wrong, that would annoy me to no end.

Rode an hour on the bike at 7 am and was literally dripping with sweat when I was done. My little forearms were covered with sweat aftwards! I have never noticed profuse sweating on my forearms before, lol.

runnersmom- that is huge error on the Fitbit! I find it much easier to run outside. I bet you will adjust quickly. You should see a huge improvement in how you feel the very next time outside.

Walked 2 miles this morning. I drove to work- gradually getting more vision back in the left eye. I felt safe and made it without incident.
