Lol, Nrdsb! I need to go to Europe. B-) Have a couple of pesky pounds that I don’t want to carry on me for 26 plus miles.
Good workouts, everyone.

Update- I have been reading the posts but we have not been very active until recently. Right after we did the half marathon (ages 59/64) H came down with Graves. After getting one pill of radioactive Iodine one month ago he is 99% better and we are now back on an exercise routine. I admit I had sympathy slowing-down and increased eating with him and he still lost weight due to it and I gained 5 lbs! His endocrinologist said she spends a lot of time arguing with coaches of college girls in sports that the girls cannot massively exercise when recovering as their muscles have to recover. So back to walking 3 miles/ weight lifting / and treadmill. Yay!
It is 100 degree days here so indoors is better. On a side note I managed to move a light and break a ceiling fan blade in the exercise area- I did not realize even with a evaporative cooler how much it was helping cool us. So the blade is on order and a room fan is in the room and my routine is back on track. (It is amazing how much weight you can gain in such a short amount of time if not diligent.)
In the past we also lost weight going to Europe- so much on the go and even eating all you want. Lots of walking.
Beach sounds so good right now.
After catching up on the thread entries- I am impressed by all of your own efforts and perseverance and encouragement to others!
Finished my run. Phew. 80+ degrees. This weather is good for training for a race in the Sahara Desert.
@BunsenBurner, I hear ya! I am really not a fan of hot weather, and my last couple runs have been in 80+ degrees, including yesterday. It’s that feeling of still air and the sun baking you.
Good job, acollegestudent. Hydrate well before and after your runs, and don’t forget about electrolytes.
Ran my “Beach Route” (4.35 miles) at 6:00 AM. Although I was dripping with sweat (doesn’t take much for me) it was much cooler than it will be later today. Things are hopping here now – July 4th is the real start of “The Season” in this area. Will walk the dog a little later.
Came home from work early, fully intending to go riding. Layed down for a 30 minute nap. Woke up 4 hours later. Must have really needed it! Off to do a ride this morning then going to the Chesapeake for the weekend on our friends’ sailboat. Best way to own a boat is to have a standing invitation to stay on someone else’s boat lol. Will take my TRX with me so I can get in my 3rd day of resistance training this week. Two days of pushing heavy steel and one day of body weight training plus 3-4 days of cycling seems to be a pretty good summer formula for me.
At our lake house for our annual July 4 extravaganza, which means hosting dozens of DH’s frat buddies and families for food, boating, and a great fireworks show over the lake. We can see the fireworks from our house, so it’s a wonderful time for all.
Brought my bike and trying to get up the courage to go ride. It’s REALLY windy this morning, and there are real hills here.
Hydrate, everyone!
Exciting plans for everyone! Michael - you’re right! The best kind of sailboat is one you don’t own. Lots of fun, but lots to maintain! Nrdsb4, your weekend sounds great. Get out there on the bike! You’ll be glad you did!
10.25 miles this morning. 65 degrees with some humidity - felt a little clammy by the end. Glad it’s done.
Good work everyone. Boring 3.4 mile walk for me with the gas bubble still bouncing around in my eye like some sort of alien. A few more days, I suspect.
Happy Pre-4th! Back from a recent trip visiting relatives. Glad I went! Abasket, I hope you are thoroughly enjoying your time in France. Bit o’ strength exercises and bike riding in the past couple of days.
Abasket, I’m glad to hear you are enjoying France!
I need to get back on the wagon - I’ve been experiencing that mid-life insomnia (go to bed, but wake up at 3 am and can’t get back to sleep) which has caused me to miss a few morning workouts, and then the cycle begins …
MNKat - didn’t know if you saw this on perils of downhill riding ! http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB12268843614978254751404581042321720914358
Pizza girl, oh do I know what you mean. Try to go to bed at a reasonable hour (for me, 11:30-12:00), wake up at 3 or 4, read for bit to get sleepy again, wake up at 7:00 feeling as if I never went to sleep at all.
Did a 36 mile ride this morning at tempo pace, by myself, with several high intensity intervals thrown in. It felt great to be back on the bike. Changed my whole disposition. My wife tells me I really get cranky when I miss my rides. She’s right, I do. Last night I was a whiny, complaining mess when I fell asleep and missed riding. She’s a saint to put up with my borderline ocd training regimen.
Ohio, great article! Really captures the perils and challenges of descents in races. Even when I’m doing non-training rides with my Sturdy Girls Race Team friends, they are always exhorting me to “keep pedaling” when we are going down hill if I have the temerity to coast lol. It’s not at all unusual to hit speeds in excess of 35 mph and at that point, if I don’t know the roads well, I’m hesitant to go faster in case I need to react to road defects, cars pulling out blindly etc. On descents where I’ve hit 50 mph, there is very little time to react to things! The advent of disc brakes for road bikes is going to change the boundaries quite a bit for those willing to take the risks. A couple of years ago, on day 3 of one of the Habitat rides I did, we were doing a 65 mile leg in a tropical downpour. We did one climb that was a mile and a half long and on the flip side, had a mile and a half very steep descent - with no functional brakes. It was raining so hard that no amount of feathering the brakes would dry the rims enough for the caliper brakes to work. It was the scariest descent I’ve ever done. Disc brakes would have changed the whole equation.
Deborah- Glad you had a good trip.
Michael- I am petrified of fast downhills, which is one reason that cycling and I didn’t get along all that well around here. Even back in our Texas days when H and I tried the tandem (he’s owned it forever), I couldn’t handle the downhill speeds and having NO control over the thing since I was on the back of it.
My newest Hokas arrived today and are a blinding coral color- very cool! I guess they get to go for a walk tomorrow morning…
When I first started running, my shoes were as neutral colorwise as they could get. Coral sounds beautiful. Hope the gas bubble resolves soon and the Hokas get a workout in.
I am super pleased with the recent Lulu purchases - love the singlet and the Groove shorts are great! I bought them for Pilates and they are wonderful. Don’t have the “gripper” stuff so can’t see using them for running but I wouldn’t mind having a few more pairs.
On another note - BB, I saw the Kodiak “protein packed power cakes” mix at our Target today - I think they are what you recommended on the Weight Loss for Dummies thread. I figure they have to be healthier than IHOP or Bob Evans so will be testing them out tomorrow. I also spent a small fortune at Costco but didn’t buy anything that was bad for me!
I think that’s the mix, sabaray. I dunno if it is some sort of a placebo effect, but they keep us full until past lunch, unlike regular pancakes. They have more protein per serving than any other waffle/pancake mix without tasting strange.
I guess it’s the rare time of year to gloat about the weather in NH. Gorgeous today. Blue sky. Slight breeze. High in the upper 70s. I made it out for a nice 6 mile hike at the local state park with just enough of a climb up a small mountain to get the ol’ heart rate up. In preparation for tonight’s Fare Thee Well webcast, I was truckin’ along to a Grateful Dead playlist on the iPod. Hiking in the woods on a gorgeous summer day listening to the Dead. I guess there are worse ways to spend the afternoon.
Firing up the smoker tomorrow for baby back ribs, beef short ribs, and pull pork butt…
