Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

It’s 10:05. Am I too late for dinner?

Word is that we might get a few drops of rain this weekend! Yippee! Now I’m concerned that it is going to mess up my heat acclimation plans! B-)

Did some weights last night when I finally cooled off after my run.

Morning run and perhaps I will pick up or stir up salmon dip today. Yum!

Rode for an hour at White Rock Lake. So pretty. Did well overall, though hit some winds which I had to soldier through. I hate wind and hills.

I left my helmet at our lake house and didn’t realize it until I schlepped all my stuff to the lake this am. Most of WRL is dedicated bike trails, but there are some segments where you share the road with cars. I saw no other cyclists without helmets. I was extra careful and aware, but I am off to buy a new helmet. I really value my brain, so I’m not going to wait until I get back to our lake house to get my helmet. I figure my intellect is worth the investment.

Smart move, Nrdsb!

Bunsen, how do you make your cucumber salad? I’m always looking for new ideas.

Went to the gym this morning and did some elliptical - drove home and stepped onto my foot and about jumped out of my skin. Appointment with the sports med guys tomorrow first thing. H is out of town so I still have to manage the dogs.

Mine is really simple! Especially if I have to make dinner after my running. Peel long cukes, cut lengthwise, slice thingly. Add chopped chives, dill, and any other herbs you like. Salt, pepper to taste, a sprinkle of rice vinegar, some Greek yogurt, and it is ready to be consumed!

Sounds very good! Especially the simple part!

I am convinced that my running makes us eat healthier! When I am dripping with sweat, no way I am up to making an elaborate meal with fancy ingredients. So it is lean steaks, salmon, or chicken on the grill and some sort of a quickly cooked veggie on the side. If we feel like eating dessert, we have fruit! The fruit du jour is cherries - while the short season lasts!

We’ve been eating a lot of cherries, too. I love them.

Nrdbs- Glad you are getting another helmet. One of my Dallas friends was cycling back in my days there and hit a garden hose with her thin bike tire. It flipped her over and she cracked her helmet! It’s SO easy to go down when you are least expecting it! Do you go to Richardson Bike Mart? I LOVE that store!

Oh no Sabaray - good luck with the doc visit!

LOVE cherries! I can’t wait for them every year! I can easily eat a pound of cherries in a day (maybe more?). They might just be my favorite fruit!

@MomofWildChild, yes, I just got back from Richardson Bike Mart! Got a new helmet for my ride tomorrow. And also-for the first time-bought some cute bike shirts. I’ve always just worn D2’s sorority tee shirts because they have a front pocket for my cell phone. They aren’t the best for when the weather turns really hot, though, so I decided to go for the pro look.

My friend Dallas Smith, who just turned 75, is running his second Vol State 314 mile run. They started this morning. You have 10 days to run across Tennessee- sort of diagonally. It ends near Georgia. Most of the runners (crazies) do it unsupported, but you can do it supported, too. If you do it unsupported, which Dallas is, you are totally on your own and can’t get in or on a vehicle. You carry a small pack and can stop at hotels if you find one along the route. You have a map of the course and have to check in every 12 hours so someone knows you are still alive. People sleep in cemeteries, parks, by the side of the road… It is completely insane. He did it (and did well) 2 years ago and last year he had Graves Disease and couldn’t do it. He will be the oldest finisher ever if he makes it this year. He holds state records for most distances at most of the older ages. He is amazing and has written a couple of books.

Today he cramped up and turned rigid as a board and fell down prone. He couldn’t move. He could manage only a slow walk for quite awhile. Another guy cramped, too, and together they stumbled to an auto shop. They asked for water (they have bottles that they carry) and the shop gave them Gatorade, which helped. On he went.

This puts a new definition on crazy, but I have to admit to being jealous. I would be afraid to be running in the middle of nowhere in the dark, though. There have been some scary stories- dogs chasing runners, bees, weirdos…

Wow. Good luck to your friend and his partners in craziness!

Nrdsb4, having more than 1 helmet is a great idea. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve rushed from the house forgetting my helmet. I now keep a spare in my car at all times.

MOWC, that is an almost incomprehensible test of mental and physical endurance. Amazing!

4 miles, one bucket of sweat! I ran on the treadmill today - to test my new Bondi 3s.

Got a good belly laugh- my curious tortie climbed onto the side ramp and then decided to jump forward. Her hind legs hit the moving belt, and the cat experienced a major wipeout! She flew past me like a cannonball! She did not have a chance to land on her four feet. I checked her - she is just fine.

BTW, for ladies with wider flippers like me, men’s Hokas are awesome. Size 8 was just right for my feet (translates into size 9 ladies using the Euro size 41).

Have only been to a Cheesecake Factory a couple of times, and not recently. H dislikes pretty much all chain restaurants.

Walked 9 holes of golf Wednesday evening. We amazingly got through without getting rained out. The forecast and radar showed impending thunderstorms, but they kept missing the course. Yesterday was Cybex Arc + weights.

We’re off to our annual week at family camp in NH. Always a fun time with good friends, most of whom we see for this one week a year. I’ll be running/walking on the island path – great change of scenery, but lots of tree roots and loose stones, so I have to be careful about not rolling my ankle. Also kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.

I have to admit that it’s been a bad week for exercising. I’ve had things going on and while I’ve gone on walks and golf, no running. Yesterday despite putting on running clothes, I didn’t get out there. It was a combination of car troubles, dog sitting and helping a neighbor but still.

Today will be a run day and tomorrow a bike day.

CBBBlinker, I’ve wanted to try SUP but been nervous about it. Is it hard to do? SIL has a board at her cottage. I am not great on the water lol but I am game to try.

I did stand-up paddling for the first time on an island vacation in March. I was fine in the quiet water, found it enjoyable and challenging, but when we moved into more open water the current and wind made it quite hard. It was a good workout, but I had trouble controlling the board and having it go in the direction I wanted. We went with a group of about 8; my husband and I were the oldest and the slowest. I noticed that we were also on the oldest and least aerodynamic boards, which I assume was intentional, although I don’t know why. I would do it again, but only in quiet water.
