Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Just popping in to say hello! Sounds like everyone is busy! I am back on the regular exercise path as I try to motivate H. He has never had a weight issue but has gained 20 pounds over the past few years since his back was injured. Now that he is healed from his surgery we are moving forward with exercising together. He and I have each lost 7 pounds. Yay!

We have SUP boards at the lake. My family loves it but I am the only one who can’t do it! I have terrible balance but I keep trying! My family calls me the “jumper” because I jump off if I start to wobble.

MOWC…glad you are doing better!

Sabaray…hope the injury heals so you can continue your marathon training. Remember when you were training for your first!!! Is your D still running?

BB…I still love my Hokas! I haven’t had any shin pain since I switched.

Hi idad!

I will try to check in more often so I stay motivated. Have missed you all!

Glad to see you, NMinn, and to hear hat your husband’s back is healed!

My work is providing a free Zumba class today - I’m going to try it. Should be funny to see all my colleagues dancing around! My company has a pretty vigorous health & wellness program going - yoga twice a week, stretching class, circuit training, bike-to-lunch events, running club & now Zumba. And they sponsor us for 4 5K’s per year. I’m impressed! Most of this has developed over the last year.

Hi, NM! Enjoy your summer!

I want to try SUP, but I, too, don’t have great balance and will need smooth water and no wind! It looks so fun, challenging and peaceful! I wish my sister had one at her Poconos lake house.

My daughter wrote a good blog entry about running in just shorts/skirt and a sports bra. That was the ONLY thing we wore when I was in Dallas in the summer. Never a singlet or tank top. Somewhere along the line women got the message that we should cover up more- safety, modesty, old or young flabby stomachs… If you want to read the entry, do www. calledtoendure.com (we aren’t allowed to link stuff like that)

Anyway, this morning was brutal- 74 at 6am with high humidity. I decided to wear a cute Lulu flowered sports bra and shorts and ditch the singlet. It felt SO good! No one crashed his or her car at the horror of me running with a bare stomach! It really felt better to me. I don’t know if it is because it’s what I’m used to from the past or just because it is so dang hot and the fewer clothes the better, but I sure liked it! Maybe it’s me- I also can’t stand being at the pool or beach in a one piece swim suit. I’m almost 63, but I’m going to take the “I don’t give a ____” approach here.

Hi NM! Glad to see you and glad you and Mr. NM are doing well! While D isn’t running, she has moved on to SoulCycle and Pilates. She enrolled in something called ClassPass which allows her to try different studios without a membership there at a discounted rate. It seems to be working well for her.

Spent some time this morning with my new buddy Dr. B and need to have a MRI. No obvious fracture in the ankle, which is good but some issues with the talus that he can’t tell are old or new because I had no prior x-rays of the area. Scary phrases like “osteochondral lesion of the talar dome”. In good news, he indicated I could continue running with pain as my guide, but if it continued to worsen I needed to stop immediately. Probably treadmill for a while.

I’m glad you have a doctor that sounds like he will get to the bottom of this. Also glad you can do some running!

Sabaray - glad you saw the doctor. I guess they do a good business with runners…

Yes, I’m very glad I went because it’s not going to get better on it’s own. Glad I can still exercise. Glad I have insurance that will pay for all of this!

It was also very encouraging to see a doctor who was active and fit himself, which is something I don’t always see in my neck of the woods. I’m not going to overdo it but I think moderate exercise will be okay.

Wow, sabaray. So happy your doctor is so understanding. I ditched one doctor who said that I should not be running more than 5 miles at a time and lifting 15 lb weights! 'Cause that’s not what women of our age should be doing for exercise. 8-|

Best part of the visit was him telling me I looked at least 10 years younger than my stated age!

I’ve been really fortunate with my new health care providers. Today we reviewed my past running history and current training - he wanted an idea of what I had been doing. I told him when things weren’t getting better with RICE, I knew I needed to come in. My worst fear was that I would go in and he’d say you big dummy, it’s a sprain, or shin splints. I’ll just have to hope for the best.

3.5 miles today with my new lulu pleated skirt. I really like it, I’m tempted to get another one!

sabaray, good luck with your ankle. Hope it’s a short term recovery.

Athleta is having their semi-annual sale today - a lot of good stuff on sale!

http://athleta.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=1023728&mlink=46650,9957648,Sum_Sale_HP_Main_7_10&clink=9957648

Thanks! Hope you got some swimwear on sale!

@BunsenBurner, haha, you remembered! You are actually the one that introduced me to Athleta when I was looking for swim shorts! I knew it existed, but it wasn’t really on my radar before that thread. I did end up getting the perfect swim shorts there - unfortunately, they weren’t on sale, then OR now, but they were 100% worth it!

I am happy to report that I did get some 2 in 1 running shorts on sale: http://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1023741&vid=1&pid=438873042

I’ve never had shorts like that before, and I absolutely love them!

Also, I love Athleta now, as you can see, and it’s all your fault

Ugh. I guess I didn’t jump on the Athleta sale soon enough. Almost nothing left in my size.

@deb922 - When a friend and I have done SUP at camp, it has been on fairly calm lake water. Neither one of us had any trouble getting to a standing position; the board seemed pretty stable. The camp also offers morning “Yoga SUP” classes, which I haven’t tried. (You go out a little way from shore on the board and then do various yoga moves.) That would be more challenging, I think.

NMinn – Nice to see you back on this thread! You and H get to have a 5 lb party!

No running shorts or skirts for me, no matter how cute. I’m locked into my CW-X Stabilyx Capris for their knee support. I do like my golf skirts, though.

CBBBlinker, when my knee feels iffy (or should I say when I am afraid it would misbehave!), I wear this:

http://www.amazon.com/CEP-Rx-Knee-Brace/dp/B004KPE3MM

It costs gobs of money, but it is the only knee brace comfortable enough to run a marathon in! My only pet peeve is that it does not come in beige or white - the black gets too hot in the sun!

Please tell your D that she wrote a great blog post, MOfWC! I like her take on running in hot weather. I almost - almost! - went shirtless last week when it was ungodly hot. The only thing that stopped me is that I burn easily if I forget to use sunblock. When I exercise in overheated hotel exercise rooms, I don’t do the shirt thing. And definitely no shirts for me at my home “gym”!
B-)

Thanks, Bunsen. I definitely just do the sports bra on my own treadmill. I think I’m going to go shirtless tomorrow for my attempt at 6 miles. It’s going to be hot even at 6am.

Go for it! I will go shirtless on Saturday!
