“Hotel Week” is over! Had a good time with all the various guests, but am ready for some down time. Did a 4.3 mile brisk walk on Sat morning with one of our guests – she’s one of the few I’ve walked with who walks as fast as I do. Usually I take Sunday as a day of rest, but I woke up much earlier than I would have liked, so ended up taking the dog for a long walk. Tomorrow and Wednesday I’ll be walking 18 holes of golf.
Congratulations to MOWC D. That’s quite an accomplishment!
Wow! So many aches, pains, and injuries being reported!! Sending healing mojo to all for quick healing and speedy recovery. (And, to be honest, knocking on wood that none of the above are headed my way …)
I did take a Naproxen this morning because the hip pain was more intense and more constant, and I needed relief - so will continue taking Naproxen for a week or so and see if that can help resolve my hip pain, or decrease it to being manageable. Years ago Naproxen worked for me when other anti-inflammatories and steroids did not - once they figured out I needed a higher dose than they were giving.
Thanks for the exercise suggestions @MichaelNKat - I do stretch and move some to relieve. I do think there is an inflammatory thing that needs to go down and then hopefully I can keep the pain low to none. I still have an exercise training session to schedule, so I will see if she can go through some of those exercises with me when I can follow through.
I somehow think this is a bit of an inflammatory issue that began when I had the flu on back to back months last fall. Due to being a stage III breast cancer survivor (and the suspicion is that if I have a recurrence most likely it would be in the bone in my lower back - due to the vascular nature of that area and others having that happen) The whole body bone scan was done in early Nov noting left hip and low back pain with history of breast cancer in 2009.
The bone scan letter did say for impression: “1. Increased activity along the sacroiliac joints could reflect sacroilitis. MRI could be performed to evaluate further if clinically warranted. 2. Degenerative changes of the spine, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles and feet. Activity consistent with osteitis pubis also noted.” The electronic report also said “activity along the shoulders, more so on the right. Some activity along the thoracic and lumbar spine. Findings probably reflect degenerative change. Soft tissues appear to have appropriate activity. Both kidneys are demonstrated.”
They also did a pelvic XRay - AP. No significant abnormality.
When I saw my medical oncologist this month (1 year visit), I didn’t have much hip aching but was more concerned with the inflammatory response and pain in the middle of my chest that began a few days after falling off a bike onto my right side - big bruise on my upper thigh, but no direct impact to my chest." Chalked it up to all the radiation I had to that area (the medial lymph nodes needed the radiation after chemo, since that tissue area was not surgically removed). Doc said that since it occurred after the fall (and my activity level was still good), Otherwise he would have been concerned and done more testing. The chest pain has gone away this past week (bike fall happened July 1).
My left shoulder has been under pretty good control with swimming and stretching (I also relate some of my left side issues to the radiation). Radiation oncologist had been impressed how I restored range of motion with swimming.
It gets a little discouraging every time I make some positive health advances, I get a few steps back to deal with. Oh the joys of aging. However I will take that versus the alternative. I like birthdays.
@runnersmom if your ortho doc is part of a group, you may check with the group practice, indicate what your current issues are, and if you should go through your family practitioner, see your current ortho doc, or be seen by someone else for the new issues.
Going to be especially hot here this week. I decided to be proactive and brought my gym bag to work - took a lunchtime break and ran a mile on the track and then did a core strength training class. It was a good workout! My abs are NOT strong!!!
Thanks SOS. I think I’ll give it a couple of days and then call if there’s no improvement. I was able to complete my 60 minutes of run/walk (35/25 today) without increased pain or burning sensation, so we’ll see what happens.
“If I stopped doing things every time I felt an ache, I’d be sitting on my butt watching TV and browsing the web 24/7.”
Exactly! Probably, you would feel even worse. My back begins to ache if I sit on my rear end for hours at a time. Running and other physical activity provides much welcome relief!

I almost never take them. I used to eat them like candy for “sinus headaches” that miraculously stopped when I quit smoking. Really, the only time I take them is while hiking to prevent general soreness (shoulders from the backpack, etc.) and rarely after hiking when I’ve overcooked the quads!
Basement for me. Rear foot elevated split squats, lousy chin ups, KB swings, and alternating DB bench press.
This has been a really long travel day. Up before the crack of dawn to head to the airport. I’ve made it safely to Shanghai, I forgot how long a 14 hour flight feels! I did a 3.3 mile run when I got to the hotel late this afternoon. It was 40 degrees C and very humid, thankfully I didn’t do the math while I was running to realize that’s 104 degrees. I was a little slower than usual, but I think that’s as much from being tired as the heat. Trying to keep myself awake for another hour or two to hopefully get on the right schedule.
Sorry to hear about so many aches and pains. I hope everyone finds some relief!
Nrdsb4-being on your feet all day like that sounds exhausting. Glad that you have the stamina to keep up with the young 'uns.
Lol thanks, but: they all talk about all the things they are doing after work, like exercising, going to additional school, taking care of young children, etc. One even goes to another job sometimes! Not this old bird. I barely get myself out of the car, walk slowly and stiffly into the house, and that’s pretty much IT. I manage to get dinner on the table, but really, I’m done for after work.
This morning at 3:00, DH and I were startled out of our sleep when our burglar alarm went off. That thing is really loud and it scared us both to death! Our monitoring company called immediately and stayed on the line with me while DH went around the house, checking all the doors and windows. He didn’t find any reason for the alarm to have gone off, so I told the monitoring company not to send the police.
After all that, we both tossed and turned restlessly for hours. I did go back to sleep about 6:00 and slept til 7:30.
I was going to ride today and do weights/strength at home tomorrow, but I think I’m going to reverse. By the time I would get to the trail it will be getting pretty warm and crowded.
@C3Baker, that’s impressive that you can run after a long flight. A friend who travels frequently overseas once told me that’s the best way to deal with jet lag. I’ve never tried it.
The Clymb has Hoka running shoes on sale from 40-50% off - for women, Odyssey, Vanquish, Valor, Stinson ATR, Stinson Lite, Mafate. For men… I didn’t check.
Sizes and colors may be limited, but it seems like a good deal and they seem popular on here, so maybe this will help someone.
