Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks, MOfWC! That was a butt kicking run. I again stopped to munch on blackberries… I should have brought my Endurolyte electrolyte capsules with me! I was super dehydrated by the end of the run and guzzled a whole bottle of water. I’m loving the Huma gels!

I’m trying to figure out my runs in Europe in the upcoming days. At least the hotel has treadmills, as one photo shows. Lol.

After I get home and while I am cooling off, in the house I will peel my shirt off and just have my sports bra on - younger DD complains about the view

I don’t have a problem with others running in sports bra. Many men (including H) are out there showing their bare skin w/o a shirt. And anyone doing a fair number of miles probably isn’t too shabby for viewing eyes either.

H and DDs are off at 6 am to do an upper river rafting run on the Ocoee. DD2 was saying at dinner last night that her close friend’s parents would never be doing something like that because they say they are too old (mom is 7 years younger than H and I; they just are both overweight and sedentary).

Great morning for a walk/jog.

Today’s exercise was a 5.4 mile (round trip) walk to Century Park. I rented an ancient recumbent bike and rode around the park for an hour. It was a very leisurely ride on the single speed rusted out bike. Beautiful scenery but hotter than Hades.

BB-wow, that’s an impressive run. I admire your perseverance. I would have been frustrated by a late start and then not having a Garmin would have really pushed me over the edge. I hope you relaxed and enjoyed the rest of your day.

SOS-the overtraining injuries of those HS students is so troubling. It’s especially baffling they were pushed so hard when running and swimming aren’t exactly sports that are known for bringing in a lot of money. I’m more familiar with HS football and basketball players being pushed unreasonably due to misguided expectations that little Johnny is headed for the NFL or NBA. Regardless, it’s a shame what happened to those two athletes.

I’m planning to get up early tomorrow morning for a run to beat the heat. I was able to sleep in today so apparently I’m over the jet lag just when it would be helpful to be wide awake at 5:00am.

On my run yesterday I came across an aid stop for a Fleet Feet group training run that had coolers of Nuun and water. I helped myself, and didn’t feel guilty since I’m a good customer even though I am not in their training group. The Nuun really hit the spot! I will be sure to thank them next time I am in the store.

" I would have been frustrated by a late start and then not having a Garmin would have really pushed me over the edge."

It did help that I knew that it was 7.5 miles from the mile marker to where I started to the shopping center at the very end of the trail. Trail maintenance folks finally installed the new mile markers that are quite precise (based on my Garmin-ed runs). So I just added 3 more miles to the round trip (by running from marker 6 to the end and back twice). I was really hurting at the end where there was a very long, straight stretch without any shade. I did not get sunburned because I wisely smeared a bucket of sunblock on my open skin.

“…anyone doing a fair number of miles probably isn’t too shabby for viewing eyes either.”

Lol, thanks, but my belly is not a pretty sight, especially when I’m running. But folks on the trail don’t seem to fall dead at the sight of it. And on the trail, no one seems to judge anyone - by definition, anyone moving, walking, biking, etc. is great regardless of their body size and shape. Only folks behaving in an a-hole manner are given the disapproving eye.

I went to see “That Sugar Film” yesterday, & dragged DH and DD2 along. It was playing at only 1 independent artsy type theater in our large city. But it was fascinating! It shows the health effects on one man as he goes from a virtually sugar-free diet to one where he ingests the normal Australian’s sugar intake which is 40 tsp per day. In 60 days, he gains 19 pounds, gets a pot belly & has the beginnings of fatty liver disease. He did NOT change the number of calories he ate per day, only the source. DD came out looking a little stunned & asked me to buy a lot of broccoli when I go shopping today, LOL. DH is tracking his sugar intake today out of curiosity. So far, just his glass of OJ had 24g sugar (about 6 tsp).

30 minute run yesterday and 6 miles today, so week 1 done as planned.

On Friday night I woke up in the middle of the night with a really bad calf cramp. Saturday morning, my calf was still sore, like I had pulled a muscle. I didn’t think I should run on it, so I decided to walk just to keep to my plan, but when I put on my running shoes, the calf didn’t hurt. I went out and ran my 30 minutes with no pain, but once the shoes were off, I could feel it again. This morning, it’s better, but still there, but I was able to run my 6 miles without pain. I hate these stupid muscle cramps. I wish I could figure out how to stop them.

blankmind, have you tried soaking your legs in Epsom salt bath? Especially after runs - apparently, helps replenish magnesium. I even take magnesium supplement.

Bunsen, I haven’t tried Epsom salts, but maybe I will. I do take magnesium, and I think I forgot my usual bedtime dose on Friday. Even with the magnesium, I still have a problem with foot cramps at night, but it does seem to help with the calf.

Tonic water is good for leg cramps. I couldn’t speak to the effectiveness of gin, however.

Count me in the camp that takes magnesium - not sure if it’s helping as I haven’t taken it very long. I think I’d rather try CD’s remedy.

Went to the gym and ran on the treadmill with no discomfort, stretched and foam rolled after. Wore the Kayanos without the heel cup and they felt great.

Oral magnesium significantly reduced my incidence of night-time calf cramps.

Waking up in the middle of the night feeling like I got stabbed in the calf sucks. My calf muscle would hurt for several days after one of these cramps. They are not fun.

I would get calf cramps because I am on Tamoxifen (estrogen blocker, due to estrogen fed cancer). I found that exercise helped relieve them. Some nights I stretch (raise my leg in bed, rotate the foot to loosen up the calf muscles). So try stretching several times in the day.

My H gets leg cramps and recently bought a pre-made bottle of what is a mixture of organic apple cider vinegar, ginger, and garlic. Two teaspoons mixed in water (forget the ratio)immediately stop leg cramps. If H gets cramps while sleeping, he drinks a capful of the stuff immediately and within minutes the cramps are gone. H goes to a wholistic health person and she told him about the this.

I can’t remember if this was the thread where people were talking about Asics Gel Kayanos, but on Roadrunner sports, if you are a VIP, you can get the 21 model for less than $100. That’s a pretty good deal.

Sabaray is in the Kayanos now. Good deal!

That is a very good deal - I got a nice discount at the shop where I bought mine but they were definitely more than $100. I haven’t run much in them yet so I don’t want to invest in another pair right away - good tip, though!

@sabaray, if you join their club you can return them for 90 days. Nordstrom has them on sale for 119, and today is the last day of their sale.

On the subject of tonic water:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/10335049/

Apparently, the dose of quinine needed to quiet leg cramps is equivalent to 10 glasses of tonic water, because a glass contains about 20-30 mg of it or so, and the FDA has banned quinine pills for leg cramps:

My aunt swore about having some vinegar every day. I do think some of those things in water is very cleansing.
