That might have to be my new race technique - dressing like a hot dog. Might improve my times!
MOWC - that’s the funniest thing I’ve read in a while!!
Covered 5 miles this morning. Did 4 at a 3:1 run/walk, then walked the final mile. I really enjoy those 1 mile cool-downs. By the time I walk in the door, I feel cool & relaxed.
I got some great news! I had a bone scan this week, and my numbers improved!! This is as important to me as a 5-pound loss.
The doc said my upper spine improved 4.7 percent and my hips improved 1.5 percent. My forearm got worse, though, but the doc said he wasn’t worried about that.
I’m just thrilled. I would have been happy if things had not gotten worse. I’m not doing drugs. So what have I done differently in the past 2 years? I’ve started running (love my new Hokas – ran 4 miles in them this morning). I stopped using a trainer and devised my own strength workout, using free weights. And I started yoga.
NorthMinnesota – we did Glacier a couple years ago. Loved it. Loved loved loved it. Two of my all-time favorite hikes were there. Highline and Ptarmigan tunnel.
sabaray – you continue to amaze me. Get better, and enjoy that hot yoga. The yoga place I go to gets to 95 degrees, and that’s all I can stand. I’ve been doing outdoor yoga this summer, which has been good.
BB, enjoy your travels and good luck sticking to your training schedule.
Michael, I would skip training if my daughter called and said she had a boyfriend. Congrats on the engagement!
Stay cool, Nrdsb.
And loved the essay, MoWC.
The funny thing was, I didn’t feel “hot” while riding, just felt light headed and yucky immediately afterwards. So today I’m taking the day off and will hydrate! Will probably do a little strength training inside an air conditioned fitness room though.
Tomorrow I will get up a little bit earlier, drink a whole bottle of water before I start, and then will do my ride.
I did a 14.5 mile run this morning and it went really well. I am really lucky to have no jet lag issues this trip. The weather was great, upper 60s when I started and only 72 when I got home.
BB-I hope you’re able to get your long run in. I am learning how challenging it is to stick to a training schedule while travelling.
MNK-your playground sounds so awesome! And a real workout for sure.
NorthMinn-enjoy your trip. That sounds fabulous. Glacier is on my bucket list. It was my dad’s favorite place and my brother and daughter both loved it.
sabaray-I’m glad you enjoyed the yoga and had a good run today.
@fireandrain I would keep a watch on improvement of meds for osteopenia and osteoporosis. Sounds like you and your doc are watching your health, which is great that you have done so well with your work out adjustments.
Nrdbs- Try Nuun instead of only water.
What MOfWC said! You need salts. If you don’t like stuff in your water, try Endurolyte pills by Hammer Nutrition.
I really like Nuun too! I don’t like the taste of our tap water so I add it all the time.
C3Baker, are you running by yourself? You’re about at the point I was when I started wishing for training partners. It made a huge difference having an experienced marathoner to run with - lots of things I wouldn’t have thought of!
That’s amazing AND encouraging @fireandrain! Had my dexascan this week - will see how my numbers are.
Cut my long run short to only about 16 miles. Jet lag, combined with stomach issues and other inconveniences, turned me into a slug.
It was a good thing I did not run yesterday - there was some sort of an ultra race happening in the city.
MNK, congratulations!
Many miles being logged on this thread lately. Wow.
A run for me yesterday and likely a strength workout today.
Interesting article in the March 2015 IDEA Fitness Journal on a 2014 study of the Mediterranean Diet. The study, published in the British a Medical a Journal, found that the Mediterranean Diet is associated on a molecular level with lengthening of DNA telomeres which are related to life expectancy and health. Conclusion was: eat Mediterranean and live longer because of demonstrated cellular and molecular changes. I will try to find a link.
7.5 miles today. Week 2 done, with no cheating! The highlight of my run was when my garmin buzzed me and I looked down expecting to see 5 miles, but the garmin said 6! You have no idea how excited I was! It even made the last hill seem easier somehow.
fireandrain, that is really great news, and so encouraging to me. Are you doing anything with nutrition and supplements?
Finally had a chance to catch up with everyone’s posts. Wow, lots of activity and good news. Fireandrain, that is very encouraging.
Blankmind, if you ever will feel tired and discouraged during a future run, just picture your excitement of discovering that you had ran these 6 miles…
Have to say that I’m beginning to enjoy running in kilometers. The distance between km markers is much shorter than the distance netween mile markers.
Our friends here got pretty excited about me running and are trying to encourage me to sign up for the Stockholm marathon.
MNK, is this the article? I will see if I can dig it up at the library when I get back.
BB, that’s not the article but it appears to be covering the same study. I found a link to the study:
Got up early today and got to the lake at sunrise. We are expecting 107 today, so I wanted to get there as early as possible.
After 2 days of rest, I think I may have done a personal best, at least on certain segments. I upped the resistance just a tad, so I was riding faster and it felt good.
We’re looking for a weak cold front tomorrow to lower the temp to 102, then 99 the following day. Yuck.
Ran 8.8 miles on Saturday! It was only my second (maybe third if you count high school) run of that length (usually I do about 3.5 miles), and it felt great! 9:55 minute miles average speed.
:)>-
