Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Yay, Bromfield!!! Get the more submissive of the two. Alpha dogs do not like to be told what to do.

What kind, Bromfield? We are starting to look at rescues and decided we want a 1-3 year old dog instead of going through the puppy thing again.

Fireandrain- that’s interesting. Thanks for the link. VO2 tanks as you age, of course, but it makes sense to try to strengthen the feet, ankles and lower legs.

Met jym626 for lunch in Chattanooga (halfway between our homes) and we did not eat a healthy lunch, but we had fun!

“BunsenBurner-a big congratulations for that amazing marathon performance!!! Combining the heat and hills that you described sounds absolutely brutal. Nice job! And I’m kind of amazed that you’ve done only 5 races, one of which was Boston. You must be very selective in your races!”

Thanks! Yup, I have to balance running with work, studies, and general cat herding duties (plus a 3 hr RT commute!), which means I have to be very selective and time the training so no 20 mile runs or long races would fall during my finals or major work events. I had planned and trained for quite a few more races than the 5 I did run, but work stuff got in the way.

MOWC, you’ve racked a fair amount of CC meet and greets - lucky you!

Well, I’m the brand new owner of my Fitbit Charge HR - just got er set up - I think! Weirdly, one of the reasons I decided to take the plunge was that I knew I was probably going to need to replace my regular watch soon - it’s old. Apparently it knew it’s “time was up” - woke up and the watch had stopped working at 11:45pm last night - and my Fitbit arrived in the mail today. Guess it WAS time for a new wrist toy!

Any tips for me on anything with this new baby? I’m going to have to do a little looking for alternative bands - why are they all so awful looking!? I’m sure I’ll get used to it - I got the black one - but man, does not win any attractive awards for something that you are suppose to wear all the time!!!

I have the FitBit Charge (not HR) and I got the RoadID that fits on it. I don’t wear the RoadID on it all the time- just for running. It makes the Charge band even uglier! I think you just have to get used to the fact that they aren’t gorgeous. At a fancy family wedding two weeks ago my daughter and I were VERY dressed up. Our FitBits were very visible in the pictures! We weren’t about to miss out on all the steps!

Haha on not wanting to miss out on all the steps. I may or may not have gone up and down our stairs to the 2nd floor a couple extra times in the last two hours - just to make sure it counts!

My exercise today was a 3-mile RT walk which included braving the Hill - both up and down! Yikes, my sore legs are really feeling it! I could have taken the bus, but… lost my bus pass and did not have any cash on hand! Conveniently, there are no credit card accepting Metro kiosks anywhere in the area where I was hanging out. But I got a new bus card downtown, so I do not have to walk all the way home, which would be pretty much a marathon distance.

I did 6.3 very hilly miles in the park in last night’s run. Tonight is a workout at the gym with my trainer. I hope he doesn’t make me too sore before this weekend’s long run.

abasket-enjoy your Fitbit! If you think the Charge looks awful, you see my Surge! It’s huge and looks terrible. I was going to return it because it’s just so ugly, but it took 2 days to get the return info from Fitbit and by that time I had fallen in love with my ugly baby.

BunsenBurner-are you working on an advanced degree? Kudos to you for balancing all of that - work, school, fitness, cat herding, and plenty of fun travel - that’s a lot!

Bromfield - a PUPPY! Yay! Enjoy! You’ll get lots of exercise training a puppy!

MOWC-glad to hear that you are looking at rescues. I’m sure it will be nice to have a dog in your life again. Are you looking for another Golden? Good luck!

We rescued our first and only pup/pet ever - and he is the BEST I could have ever asked for - he’s a corgi/beagle. Good luck to all on pup searches.

Yeah, C3, I really considered the Surge but backed off because of the size - I’ll bet in a couple of years they will have these things down to no size at all somehow.

Though I initially wasn’t really all that interested in the sleep data, it was interesting to see my first night data - pretty telling! H works late and often ends up falling asleep in his chair and doesn’t come up to bed till 3 or 3:30am - and that is EXACTLY when my restless sleep was occurring - so yeah H, your habits DO effect mine!!!

I missed out on 2 dogs that caught my eye, but, yes, we are looking at a Golden or Golden mix.

My weight is really low right now. I’m not complaining at all, but it’s probably partly due to stress. I don’t think I have seen this weight for 30 years or more. Part of it is that I am eating my largest meal at noon (we tend to go out at lunch from work) and not much at all for dinner. I’m also trying to avoid most weeknight alcohol unless I’m at an event.

The tech product I’m eyeing right now is the Speedo Shine (http://misfit.com/products/speedo-shine). It just came out – it measures lap count and swim distance as well as all the other stuff (not heart rate, though). I hate counting laps and always lose track.

Yoga yesterday was tough – we’re having a heat wave, and I was sweating buckets. It was a really small class and the instructor came over to me constantly to readjust me. Which was fine – except that I know I’ll never remember to make those adjustments the next time. One thing I know about myself is that I am not a kinetic learner, that I have very low muscle memory (if that’s the right term). I just won’t remember exactly where she placed my hands, feet and bum for downward dog. I’m sure I could get more out of yoga if I was more in tune with these minute body movements, but as long as I get out of it what I want, I’m satisfied.

BB, I know those hills in Seattle can be killers. Kudos to you for being able to go up a hill after running 26+ miles.

fireandrain, interesting! Many moons ago, baby kiddo used Tempo Trainer - a tiny device that was supposed to be kept under the swim cap. It was a pacing device which would make beeps at preset intervals, and I think it also counted laps, if I recall it correctly.

My legs are now 80%, and I’m itching to sign up for another race!! Everyone and their mother in law here is signing up for the Seattle Marathon or Half. Running with a heard of 25,000 is not my cup of tea…

Sharing this here with my fellow runners and non-runners

That’s a good one BB.

I wondered about the knee thing and if in fact, the running/weight bearing exercise was indeed GOOD for bone density. After all, with osteoporosis, they recommend lots of weigh bearing exercise and I at least, have not heard that defined as walking only.

I believe we have a lot of September b-days among us - so I’ll use this day to wish all my fellow September b-day buddies a good b-day, a healthy year and the dessert or sinful food item of your choice on your day!!! (mine is later in the month)

Happy birthday wishes to all celebrating their (39th, I guess? ) in September!!! <:-P <:-P

abasket, you inspired me to do a google search for Fitbit alternate bands, and I ended up on Etsy. (And I don’t even own one of these yet!) Who knew? Many choices.

For weddings, you can slip a decorative piece over the display: https://www.■■■■■■■■/listing/230359981/fitbit-charge-charge-hr-wristband-slider?ref=related-0

Or cover the whole thing with a bracelet: https://www.■■■■■■■■/listing/240872156/fitbit-flex-bracelet-my-own-hearts?ref=related-0

Wear it around your ankle: https://www.■■■■■■■■/listing/230863365/fitbit-cover-for-charge-or-force-plus?ref=related-1

Amazing creativity  I like that bracelet cover!!

Happy birthday everyone!

5 miles today. It was one of those days where I had to force myself out, and ended up having a good run.

That is a good link, Bunsen. I especially like the one about not needing the long run to be 20 miles. When I was faster, I could do that, but now I cap at about 17 or 18 max.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. Mine is tomorrow- but no new age group. I am racing a 5K with my daughter’s church team as my first race as a 63 year old!
