"Michael does have a really cool life- especially for a lawyer! "

You too, MOfWC! There is no statute that says lawyers’ lives should be boring!

I am barely able to drag my feet today, but this will be over soon. The bad news is that I left my “rolling pin for sore muscles” in the suitcase, and Mr. took off for his business trip with it. Oh well, he might need it - turns out, Mr. walked about 7 miles on the day I ran my 26.2 (two round trips from the hotel to the start/finish line, because the shuttles were only for runners, and the roads were blocked off). So now Mr. thinks of walking a half if I enter a race where there are walkers allowed.

I was wondering how you were feeling today, Bunsen! I wore my Bondi 4s this morning in honor of you. I raced in my Altra Paradigm 1.5s. Good for Mr. B! The problem with walking the halfs is that a lot of them have cutoffs and, in my opinion, you have to walk really fast!

Thanks, MOfWC! You are absolutely right about the cut off times, and that’s one of the criteria we will consider. In my race, it looks like about 40-50 or so folks who signed for the full opted out and did the half, and about 40-50 did not finish before the 8 hr cutoff time (or did not even try to start!). The fullers started together with the halvers, and as I was finishing, I was passing bunches of said halvers leisurely strolling towards the finish. Mr. is definitely a fast walker when he does not have a camera in his hands.

I am back working despite the sore muscles (lol, people here probably think this is one bad hangover! ).

^^Wow, that’s impressive. Even if your feet are in a pan of cool water and your head is resting on your desk!!!

Today’s exercise has been a couple miles walking on campus between new med student orientation and running to get an iced coffee ( ) , morning pup walk and 30 minutes of grass cutting in the heat. Maybe one more pup walk tonight to round out the day.

Wow, abasket! You are quite a triathlete today: campus-walking, mowing, and pup-walking!

Closest I’ll get!!!

Big thanks to MOfWC for her discovery of Oofos! I got a pair at the expo - without MOfWC’s helpful reviews I would have dismissed them as gimmicky, overpriced flip flops. Nope. They are in a class of their own! As I already mentioned elsewhere, I wore my new cranberry-colored pair on the plane - with perfectly color-coordinated Injinji toe socks. I should have asked Mr. B to take a picture!

Today was a rest day as it rained all day here. I need to get a new pair of shoes before I run again as these are giving me leg pain and need to be replaced.

Thanks, Deborah. It’s nice to be satisfied with a race and not feeling like death during the whole thing.

Getting my heart rate up today by watching tennis: Serena vs. Venus. Should be a great match!

I had time only for a short walk this morning. And, I have a blister under my big toenail. Shoes fit perfectly, so this may be from a hike in old shoes. Ouch. :9

Well, another morning of tackling the hill and I am happy to report it went better than last week even though the heat and humidity have returned. Always nice to see improvement! I had a Pilates session yesterday which was really tough - progressing to long spine. Monday H and I did quite a bit of yard work - my arms were feeling it yesterday.

Somebody explain the starvation response to me, please…is this a real thing, or one of those mythical things in listicles about “why you can’t lose weight”. I am also trying to figure out what to eat that’s low carb (I have thyroid issues, and seem to be carb sensitive) and low fat (sky high cholesterol) and also portable.

Someone else can explain the “starvation response” scientifically better than me.

But I’ll say this. You will never “win” for long if you don’t adopt a way of eating that you can’t sustain in general for the long haul. Any form of diet that is “just to lose weight” is not going to keep weight off when you stop eating that restricted way. It’s really simple - you must learn to adopt an eating lifestyle that you adhere to let’s say 90% of the time.

What should you eat? Think of eating as much food as possible in it’s natural form. So think the perimeter of the grocery store - not the stuff in the middle so much!!! Fruits and vegetables. Leaner meats/fish. Dairy in it’s purest form (so plain yogurt with your own “sweetner” like fruit) as opposed to sugar filled yogurt or cheese not cheese product!)

Not to say you can’t use canned good like beans to make a chili. Or a can of quick oats to make oatmeal. But keep that “food in natural form” for most of the food you eat.

I bring both breakfast and lunch with me to work daily. Breakfast is usually one soft egg, yogurt with fresh fruit and a sprinkle of granola. Sometimes I do a one egg omelet with meat/veggies/cheese. Lunch is often dinner leftovers paired with a fruit or raw veggies. One piece of chocolate something for a treat.

Key words for me:
Track your food (a must if you want to gauge fat/carbs, etc.)
Reduce your portions
Choose food in natural form
Exercise more and regularly
Allow occasional treats in reasonable portions (I LOVE food - but I don’t have to indulge every meal!)

Make the meals you have delicious and satisfying. People can’t live on carrot and celery sticks!!!

50 minute run and HIIT workout this morning.

greenbutton, there’s only carbs, fat and protein to eat, so it’s kind of hard to do both low fat and low carb. I thought I read that they were now saying that eating fat does not cause high cholesterol? This is where we could use idad’s input!

Went for spin class at lunchtime. Oddly, no one else showed up except me and the instructor! I told her she didn’t have to do the class for just me and I opted to run indoors instead since I was there. Track and then treadmill with some intervals. A good reminder of how much I hate the treadmill!!!

Quote I saw on Twitter today:
“Healthy eating isn’t a punishment: it should be a team effort from the whole family.”
Or effort from yourself.

Immediately thought of MoWC when I saw this headline, “Why runners get slower with age.” (Since I’ve only been running for 2 years, this hasn’t happened to me yet – I started off slow!) Summary: our lower leg muscles age faster.

http://nyti.ms/1UGwgSb

"The differences were striking. With each passing decade, the runners’ stride length and preferred speed dropped by about 20 percent.

Meanwhile, runners older than about 40 displayed much less activation of and power in the muscles of their lower legs, especially those around the ankle and in the calf.

Consequently, Dr. DeVita and his colleagues found, these runners pushed off more weakly with each stride and did not rise as high into the air as younger runners, a change in form that accelerated as runners reached their 50s."

Possible response: “To lessen the chance of such injuries and potentially also maintain more of our speed as the years pass, he said, we probably should consider strengthening our calf and ankle flexor muscles.”

I have been really busy the past couple days and haven’t had a chance to get online - so many posts to catch up on!

BunsenBurner-a big congratulations for that amazing marathon performance!!! Combining the heat and hills that you described sounds absolutely brutal. Nice job! And I’m kind of amazed that you’ve done only 5 races, one of which was Boston. You must be very selective in your races!

MOWC-congrats on your 5k and to your daughter on her race!

MNK-your party sounded like a hoot. It’s good that you all stayed hydrated with all that Mikes Hard lemonade!

I have been keeping up with my training program. Monday was a 6.3 mile run, last night was a 10.3 mile run. Tonight will be 5.5 miles, this will be 5 loops of the killer hills at the local park. Not exactly looking forward to this! But it has cooled off some, so that helps.

When they have gender specific shirts, I think some of the races have cool shirts. I really like the shirts we get at the Big10K and it’s fun to get school shirts as a running shirt - and unlike a lot of shirts, they fit well. I get really annoyed at big races that don’t have gender specific shirts. The majority of races are 50% or more female, so I don’t understand why they don’t all have ladies shirts available. It’s understandable for the little local races, but anything big should offer both. I use a lot of the tech shirts working in the yard and garden, so I do get a lot of use of even the ugly ill-fitting ones.

Did a quick 3 mile walk early this morning–limited time today. H and I decided to get a puppy and we drove to the breeder’s place to pick out our puppy! It’s a difficult decision–all of them (9) were so very cute. They are 6 weeks old today and we can take ours home in 2 weeks. We narrowed it down to 2 pups.

That will be a very lucky puppy, Bromfield! Sure you don’t want two?

fireandrain, that’s one of the things I am really working on in Pilates - feet and ankles. I think runners always think about their legs - and I thought I had really strong legs - what I really had were strong quads. I had gotten very unbalanced.
