Good job on the race Gertrude!
I did a 20 mile training run this morning and I lived to tell about it. Yay! The plan called for 19, but I decided to go for 20 because I leave for China in the morning. I’m not sure I’ll be able to do the 20 mile run next weekend. It is still in the mid 80s there with lows of 70, so it will be pretty hot when I run next weekend. I ended up with a blister on the bottom of my foot, now I know I should be putting some Lanacane on, maybe that will help.
Sabaray-I’m glad you are enjoying running without training for anything.
Gertrude - great run!
MOWC-great race and congrats on knocking so much off your time!
fireandrain-where are you going on your spring hiking trip?
deb922-congrats to your daughter!
C3Baker, wow. You are now officially ready for your marathon!
Stretch and walk on the plane! Fingers crossed for uneventful trip.
Lanacane or Bodyglide definitely helps, and I highly recommend inspecting the inside of your socks… There could be some tiny threads sticking out!
4.5 mile walk today. Still battling insomnia. ugh…
Great running weather this morning - clear, low humidity and 48 degrees! Five and a half miles in the bank. I was a little tired after TRX/Pilates yesterday, but made it through. Tried a new pair of Asics and have to say I definitely prefer the Kayano to the 2000. Unfortunately, they were still a little damp after Saturday’s rainy run.
Bunsen, you are a wealth of information! I haven’t been troubled by blisters but always good to hear everyone’s tips and tricks.
NM, sorry about the insomnia. Are you waking and having difficulty getting back to sleep?
Body Glide is good, but one of my running friends recently posted that she accidentally used it as deodorant!
We had the same weather, sabaray! Hard to get out of bed, but gorgeous running. I thought I would be really slow after all my weekend miles/race, but I felt good. Just a short 2.5 for a recovery day.
Good morning all! Kudos and best wishes to all as appropriate for their successful races, fun backyard parties, birthdays, healthy eating, etc.
@abasket - I actually don’t find the Fitbit Charge HR in black to be all that ugly. I wear it almost all the time, just as I would a regular watch. That said, I do take it off when I’m extra dressed up, as for the wedding in Chicago a couple of weeks ago. Yup, the downside is missing out on some steps – which can be made up by certain activities like scrubbing the mineral deposits off the shower walls …
Gorgeous sunny September morning – 4.8 miles on my preferred beach route. Last week was just SO hot and humid. I went out running while in my hometown in MA visiting my father and couldn’t stop dripping all over the place when I finished. I’m always sorry to see summer end, but never sorry to say goodbye to the humidity.
Where is idad? Hope he’s well.
Sabaray…yes, I fall asleep but then wake up and can’t get back to sleep. I am taking magnesium, use lavender and keep to a regular bed time. Have also increased my exercise and have been eating very clean. Last night I went to sleep around 10:30, woke up at 12:30, tossed and turned until 1:15 when I got up and came downstairs and sat in the dark for 45 minutes trying to relax. Laid down and finally fell asleep around 4:30 and then awake at 6:05. It’s going to be a long day.
Speaking of sleeping and Fitbit, I’m kind of annoyed. Woke up this morning to find that a piece of my Fitbit is missing - the metal piece that you need to slide the band through to “buckle” through the little holes. I’m thinking it must have come off when I was sleeping! UGh! But H was still sleeping when I left for work and it was still sort of dark so I had to limit my rummaging. First step is to hope to find it, second to see if it snaps back on easy - if not, I’ll be calling LLBean to get it replaced - less than a week old!
Apparently I’ve gotten quite addicted to the FItbit number game though. I would not be lying to say the band is currently residing in a “safe” part of an undergarment to still count my steps today!!
NM, hope you can find a solution to your sleep issues. I’m sure it’s perpetuated by the fact that when you do wake up, your mind “expects” to not be able to fall asleep!
So sorry to hear about your sleep issues, NMinn! Is it recent stress-related? Hope you will be able to solve the issues with your insomnia. Any chance a new set of bedding and/or mattress could help?
I did some core exercises past weekend. On Sunday, went to the mall and ended up in the Lulu store. Walked out with the micro pleat skirt in butterfly print and a pair of my favorite shorts, just like the ones I ran my marathon in - they were on sale.
@NorthMinnesota - have you tried melatonin? It has helped me with sleep issues in the past.
I was lucky enough to receive a lulu gift card for my birthday and need to buy something fun with it. Don’t know that the butterfly print would be the right look for me though! Bunsen - do tell! What are your favorite shorts?
NM, I take magnesium and melatonin both and I hate to say it but it’s not helping me at all. My sleep issues are definitely stress related, however. I like the idea of new bedding and a mattress, though.
Sabaray, these are the shorts I like:
They fit 2 gels in the front of waistband and have a small zip pocket on the back for other necessities. They dry so quickly!
I am having sleep issues, too. I’ll be OK for a couple of nights, then spend about 2 hours awake in the night. I know it is stress and worry, but it’s frustrating.
This happens to me as well. It’s so frustrating. Mine at least seem to come in waves, so eventually things seem to settle down. I’ve known people who have chronic, unrelenting insomnia, and I really feel for them.
I wish I could advise how to turn off the thought processes after waking, but I haven’t gotten it down myself yet.
With aging, sleeping soundly through the night can be an issue. Try doing all the good ‘sleep hygiene’ things. Otherwise, just don’t get frustrated and use the time and then go back to bed. Sometimes if you would be too tired the next day if you don’t just rest, then just rest. Maybe you can figure out how to ease the stress; if the worry can be eliminated but if it is stuff out of your hands - turn it over to God. I don’t enjoy dwelling on worry so I use prayer. My medication keeps me up some nights, but I cannot risk return of cancer, so you deal with the cards you are played.
Have tried melatonin in the past and it didn’t help. I have had cycles of this for years and I thought I had finally figured things out. Best laid plans…
Mattress is only 2 years old and I love it! Bedding probably could use a refresh. Probably is stress related.
In the meantime I will keep exercising! Have finally broken through the plateau and lost 11 pounds.
Good job, Gertrude!
I hope you do get some rest, NM!. I too have experienced this, especially when the restless legs act up. I’ll confess to using prescription meds, if needed
Yay on the weight loss and exercise!
Belated happy birthday wishes to MoWC and more timely ones to those who celebrate in September.
We went north for the weekend to visit family and attend some fancy functions. Too much good food and only walking for exercise. Yesterday, once home, I was able to hit the gym and run 5K, do weights, and walk some more. Today is a walking, stretching, and core workout. Feels great.
I’ve had my share of insomnia as well, so I feel your pain!
One thing I highly recommend is to go offline for an hour before bedtime. No backlit devices of any kind. I know, easier said than done - I’ve been guilty working or checking CC until midnight…
I can usually fall asleep OK (even with checking the backlit device at the final seconds…) but when I wake up at 1 or 2am… it’s really bad to check the phone in the middle of the night.
