C3Baker, if your race is close, make your trainer aware of this. Sore upper body translates into the overall fatigue over those 26 miles, as one of my friends recently discovered. You want to be fully tapered and rested going into your marathon.

MOfWC, training for a tri only to see your event cancelled would be incredibly sad. :frowning:

Got a self-inflicted spam mail from CEP - it is Socktoberfest! All socks and sleeves are buy 2, get one free with the code CEPB2G1 through the end of October.

3.5 walking miles in by 11:00 this morning. Have my 10,000 step goal for day already met with another walk scheduled this afternoon with H. I am back at it trying to reverse some disturbing health test results. Ish…

Finally got a break from the heat! Biked for a little over an hour this morning. Sunny and 61 degrees. Perfect.

NM, you know you can always be both accountable and unaccountable here! Glad to have you around!

Spin class and then a couple miles around the track. At least I don’t have to deal with the wind outside!

Did a parallettes workout last night followed by 3 sets of chin ups, 3 sets of dips and 3 sets of a variation of standing dumbbell curls. The curls were kind of interesting. Don’t know the technical name for it but you stand holding 2 Dumbbells hanging at your side, curl one side to the mid-point of the range of motion and then hold it there while doing full range of motion reps with the other arm. When you reach your selected reps, you immediately reverse arms and do a second set. On the next set, you reverse which arm starts out with the static half curl hold. It blasts your biceps and the static hold component really fires your muscle fibers thereby enabling (or requiring  ) you to reduce the weight of the Dumbbells, thereby reducing the risk of tendon injuries, while still getting a great bicep workout.

I have one more workout to do in this phase of the parallettes training before I move to phase 2 but I’m inpatient to move on already lol. Phase 1 was foundational strength building for shoulders, triceps and core. Phase 2 is functional strength building combined with progressions of skills for specific movements. In Phase 3 those movements are put together in progressive combinations and finally in phase 4, all of the combinations are put together into an uninterrupted flow like doing a gymnastics routine on miniature parallel bars.

It’s been a tough adjustment mentally to break away from weight lifting as the foundation of my strength training. (I’m still doing one traditional weight lifting workout a week.) But while my max ability to do bench presses has declined, my core is stronger than its been since my 20’s, my deltoids and triceps have more definition and the pain in my AC joint and insertion point in the shoulder of my bicep tendon, brought on by lots of bench presses and heavy flys, has virtually disappeared. And because the parallettes require compound, multi-plane movements, I feel like I am moving better in general during daily life activities.

M&K: what are parallettes? Is it a set of exercises that strengthen one’s core? Can you explain? It sounds good. Is there a website that explains the Phases? My trainer is moving back to Wales and I’m trying to figure out what I can do on my own. It’s crazy because I know quite a bit, but I get into the gym and my mind goes blank.

Weather totally sucks outside. 47 degrees. Spitting rain with showers due later. High winds. I haven’t been stuck indoors in forever. Already considering baking cookies. Yikes.

Thanks for the VT info, I am not a competitive runner. My running would be what most consider sprints as field hockey referee for 35 min halves.
I keep my cardio low impact: swimming. I do walk two big dogs. One who would prefer to run: a pointer and one who is the sniffer: a Rottweiler.
I am going to go push the lawnmower today along with whacking weeds out of my garden.

Bromfield2, parallettes are miniature parallel bars typically used by gymnasts to warm up for their events. There’s a company called Gold Medal Bodies that has put together a load of body weight, movement based training programs ranging from flexibility, to movement,to floor exercises, to parallettes and rings. The company is run by former gymnasts and martial artists some of whom are also yoga practitioners and one of whom is also a physical therapist. Their basic philosophy is to develop functional movement based strength that puts play, fun tricks and skills and usable strength back into fitness. I have their flexibility, Parallettes 1 and Rings 1 programs. I use the flexibility program for targeted areas and am progressing through Parallettes 1. Because of space constraints, I’m saving the Rings program for when I can be outside next spring and also to allow me to use the Parallettes program to condition my shoulder joints for the stresses of the rings. There are videos on GMB’s website as well as on You Tube. You should also look into TRX. Comes with videos and sample exercise programs, also has lots of videos on You Tube.

Original plan called for 8 miles today - I only managed 5 before I felt some hip pain. Stopped immediately & walked home. I’m disappointed in one way, but glad I stopped because I needed to stop.

10.3 comfortable miles- 51 and gloomy with some misty stuff in the last mile or so. Perfect running weather except for me who needs sunshine. I didn’t look at the splits and did pretty well. I have half marathons the next two weekends! Leaves are falling and parts of the path had a lot of leaf cover, but it didn’t seem slippery. Wore the Bondi 4s, which will probably be the race shoes, although they really are clunky.

Good Call, Gertrude.

Beautiful day in Dallas. It was 59 degrees and sunny when I started my ride. But the lake was having another race of some kind, so it was not the best day to ride with the throngs of people participating. Stopped after 45 minutes and called it a day.

3.25 trail run. 47 degrees with a stiff wind. It was fine and the run felt good.

My Oiselle order arrived! I love the orange tank with birds in flight. Will order the long sleeve tee! Size small fits perfectly for me - not too tight, not too loose. The other tank… windproof and transparent. Lol. I thought it would look like a mesh cover up for my Stuff Your Bras, but it looks plastick-y. Mr. declared it “too sexy for the trail” I will use it as a wind cover over tees for my runs in the winter.

The weather is awesome here in my neck of the woods, so off to the trail we will head as soon as Mr. finishes reading the Internet.

Aren’t those Flye tops wonderful? What did you get that is transparent?

Gertrude, that was a smart move!

MOfWC, the tag says “Airy Tank” color “Ocean.” It is pretty, but it is not breathable! Yes, the Flyte tops are awesome!!

60 degrees, light breeze, sunny! Ran 8 miles - overdressed for the weather! Actually, the Flyte top was perfect over the Lulu SYB, but my bottom almost fried in my black CW-X capris. I thought their purple stitching would coordinate well with my purple socks, but I underestimated how hot it would get.

When weather first turns cool here in the south you see every possible choice of running attire. I never remember what I wear in 40 or 50 degrees- even after almost 40 years of running! Today in 51, gloomy/some drizzle I saw everything from almost-a-parka to a bare chest. My daughter did her run in shorts/tshirt and I was in capris with a Nuu-Muu dress and long sleeved Brooks tech shirt over it. I was just right for me.

Dressing for this weather is tricky, totally agree with you, MOfWC! When it is 90 degrees, the choice is easy. Today, I saw pretty much the same thing: men with bare chests, little old ladies shuffling along in puffy vests, and every other possible running wardrobe choice!
