Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Last night was a 6.3 mile run. My glute and hamstring in my left leg have been bothering me for a while and they were really hurting last night. Also hurts when I climb stairs. I should probably rest but I’m so focused on my training plan that I hate to deviate from it and tomorrow is my long 22 mile run. I won’t get many miles in this weekend - I’ll be really busy with our son’s wedding - and then next week I’m flying back to China so there will be a lot of rest on the airplane.

fireandrain-sorry to hear about the head cold. Those are awful! I hope your event last night went OK. I have a hard time at social events if I’m not feeling well.

MOWC-glad to hear that your eye procedure will head off a potential detached retina, but sorry that it was so painful for you. Great news that you don’t have any activity restrictions. Did you have any symptoms that prompted having the procedure done, or was this preventative based on what happened with your other eye?

Thanks. This was strictly preventative since there was a little of what they call “lattice” which is just a thinning around the edges. They go in and tack it down with the laser.

I really want to encourage you to rest if you’re hurting, C3Baker - everyone (including Bunsen and MOWC) told me the goal for the first marathon was simply to finish. Running through pain now might mean not finishing and after all your hard work, you really don’t want that! You’ve reached the 20 mile marker, correct? I did not see any meaningful benefit in running further during training. On race day, miles 20 through 26 hurt just as much as they did the day I ran 24! I hope that made sense.

Goodness, MOfWC! Anything that messes with the eyes completely freaks me out! Fingers crossed that you are doing ok.

C3Baker, ouch!!! Are you sure you need to run those 22 miles?! I am terribly afraid that you are going to wreck your body with this plan… Good luck with the wedding planning and the trip!

wow the winning weekend, for everyone, keeps me wanting to be killing it too.

We did a 1 mile warm up and then repeated 4 sprints with jog recovers then another cool down mile.

Out back, I found my son’s weight set. I found out just how little upper body strength I possessed when I tried to throw the barbell over my head. Only the bar
How many weeks before I could add a weight?
so leaving the bar on the pool deck to add to my day and laughs.
I have a 4 o’ clock tee time for 18 holes.

Keep those kale recipes coming. Is there a difference in massage time for scotch curly leaf versus smooth lacinato?

Sabaray - good post. I completely agree with you.

@GertrudeMcFuzz, as MOWC said, I am in Dallas. My phone app says 99 today and 97 tomorrow, then we begin a gradual cool down.

Weather here sometimes has a similar effect on me that cold and gray has on people who have long winters. I get very frustrated and almost depressed from this relentless heat. I HATE IT here sometimes.

If I can just bear with this through the weekend, I think we are headed for some more normal weather. One positive was that at least it cooled off over night and was 59 degrees when I began my ride this morning, so it wasn’t totally awful.

I did my 40 minute run this morning. I think I’m catching fireandrain’s cold. I debated resting today, but decided to do the scheduled workout. I’m hoping I feel better for this weekend’s 17 miler.

I am also dealing with hot weather, and also high humidity, which I’m just not used to, but today was cooler than yesterday so I think our weather is going back to normal.

3CBaker, I know how you feel about wanting to stick to the plan. But if you’re having pain, the rest might do you more good than the miles will.

Walked 3.25 miles, no incline. Adding incline makes my right calf tighten and is painful! Trying to figure out what the problem is. Worked on chest and back weight machines. I think the weights and stretching is helping relieve some of the pain I have in the left trigger point area around my shoulder blade. Before starting the weights I had to have H stick his elbow in the area and press hard to work out the knot. Painful but satisfying at the same time! Trying to avoid cortisone shot that I had previously.

Took drugs last night so I could sleep. And felt OK enough this morning for a 5.5 mile run – slow pace, though. My back is sore, so that’s another complication.

I have never run a marathon, but logic tells me that there is a point at which pushing past the pain doesn’t make sense (says the person who just ran with back pain). Don’t hurt yourself, C3Baker!

NM: I finally got a foam roller, and it makes a big difference – it’s nice to have an option other than my husband for massaging duty. Come to think of it, I need to log off and do some foam rolling now!

Ha! When H isn’t around I lay on a tennis ball and roll it around on my back. Hurts like heck but it is effective.

I couldn’t get outside this morning but I was able to get a quick workout in at the gym using the treadmill, elliptical machine, and a few upper body exercises. That will have to do.

NM, I think the foam roller is a great idea. It should feel a little better on the back than the tennis ball. Not quite as good as an H massage, but easier to get on short notice! I love using a roller on my legs. Might it help with your sore calf?

Good luck and be careful with your son’s weights, Ulumay! Once I picked up my fit kid’s bar with light weights on the end. He had not secured them, however, and they slid off, first on one side and then the other, all while the unbalanced bar flipped. I still have a gouge in the drywall from that.

OMG Plantmom, that could have been an even bigger disaster!!!

It’s been a DAY. Have some work work to do at home tonight. Came home to a list from H (grrr!!) to do for him before he goes on a trip tomorrow. I wanted to get outside! Wasn’t the longest run in the world but got er done. H’s jobs are done too. Now onto my own things to take care of!!!

I hear you, abasket! Homework from work sucks. Sigh. I am used to it though - as long as there are no “emergency” overnighters, I’m good.

No running today. :frowning: Still sore and not happy about it! At least I walked up and down the hill and had a healthy lunch which was the center of my colleagues’ admiration: steak salad with avocado and egg!

Mellow yoga yesterday. Today I did a long (7 mile) trail walk. Weather in my part of MA is perfect.

Hope everyone who is feeling sore and tired gets some rests and recovers!

Yesterday was my last round of golf for the season. I cleaned out my locker and brought my clubs home. The course will be open for a few more weeks, weather permitting but we’ll be on vacation and then back in MA for the winter. (Yeah, most people around here go south for the winter; we go north.)

Today’s workout will include indoor and outdoor winterizing activities here at the beach.

Bummer for those warm weather activities to end!!! (crying face!!!)

I had the best Pilates workout this morning. This is my eighth month of working with this instructor on a weekly basis, and it’s just all coming together so well, I still need to do more stretching, but am going to try and find time to fit in a more appropriate yoga class. Today felt great!

Hips are feeling inflamed & kind of throbbing. I had trouble sleeping last night. Sigh. This time it seems to be my TFL muscles. I think this is the sign that I need to slow down & abandon my plans to do a half by the end of the year. My main goal is to do the Las Vegas R&R half in Nov. 2016 - the month I turn 50, so I’ve got oodles of time to slow down & still reach that goal.

Ouch, Gertrude - I’m sorry you’re having so many hip issues! What do you do for cross training activities?
