Count me in as someone who always gets nervous before a race - and yes, the whole week before. I don’t know why. I KNOW I can run 5k with no problem. You will too!!!
This doesn’t make it right, but honestly I think this is why I don’t sign up for a lot of races. I can run a 5K+ three times a week on my own and be perfectly fine and happy, but put me in a structured situation and the willies come!!!
Well, I definitely practice that changing pace every 30 seconds when I try to get to my bus! Walked close to 2.5 miles today despite the somewhat sore hamstring and it band. It was manageable.
Good morning all! Kudos and congrats to all as appropriate for running, walking, biking, and exercising in general. Special shout-out to MOWC for a great race.
I’m feeling somewhat adrift this Tuesday morning since i’m NOT getting ready for golf. Oh well – almost time to store the clubs for the winter anyway.
We had friends visiting here at the beach for the long weekend. We had incredibly glorious weather! While the men were off fishing on Saturday, my friend and I did a 4.5 mile walk – which we also did yesterday. On Sunday we all went for a VERY long walk on the beach. I do need to be very strict about my eating for the next week and a half – I’d love to take off a couple pounds BEFORE we leave for Spain!
I have a day away from the office today - about to head out for a walk since I will be doing a good bit of driving today. According to that article I need to walk fast/slow, sideways, wave my hands wildly and be more playful - I hope I don’t get arrested!!!
Did my 55 minutes this morning. I left the house at 4:30 and it was 79 degrees out already. Really miserable for running.
I really admire how all of you who travel a lot keep up with your running. I only made 1 of my 2 planned runs on my mini vacay this weekend. I think if I could have run outside I would have gotten it done. The treadmill just sucks the life out of me.
Last night was a fast 5.2 mile run. It was a beautiful fall evening and the trees on the trail are gorgeous. Made for a really nice run.
CBBBlinker-sorry that your golf season is coming to an end. It sounded as if you were pretty successful this season! Have a blast on your upcoming trip to Spain!
I see walkers in China doing all kinds of crazy things. Lots of arm swinging and other movements. Walking backwards is very popular, especially with the elderly. I think it must help with balance. It’s really amazing how much the elderly get into exercise - there are always groups out doing tai chi every morning and other kinds of exercises in the parks. And a lot of them do it in regular street clothes - no fancy athletic clothing. Lots of people exercise, walk, and even run in regular street shoes too.
It’s hard to get motivated for the treadmill, no question. Not looking forward to winter because I know I’ll have to use it some.
Rest day for me today; did a Reformer class yesterday afternoon which was difficult after running that morning. Don’t know that I’ll be able to double those up too frequently. Big walk with the pups this morning - not as cool as I was expecting. Getting frustrated with my weight - I’ve been tracking, limiting carbs, no alcohol, and I’m either plateaued or inching up. I don’t eat a lot of meat but might try completely eliminating it.
We’ve talked in the past about metabolic syndrome. I thought this was an interesting study:
I have probably posted this before, several years ago. (Which just shows how long this thread has been going!) While in college, D trained to be a Personal Trainer in the Metabolic Effect method. (Here’s a link: http://www.metaboliceffect.com) The whole concept centers around interval/rest-based training. The company is based in Winston-Salem, NC, (D went to Wake Forest) and was in it’s infancy when D was there. They offered free trainer certification at the time as a way to promote the concept.
As expected, I did a lot of walking in NYC. Managed to come home in time to hit the gym and do weights.
But then got home and was slammed with a head cold. Bam. Headache, stuffy nose, itchy throat. Amazing how fast it came on. I’m just not feeling up to doing much of anything today. I unfortunately have an event I have to go to tonight, one that I actually have to dress up for – so I’ll have to find the Sudafed and survive. May walk there and back, but we’ll see how I’m feeling in about 2 hours.
Just had a painful laser eye procedure in the non- surgery eye to anchor down what they call lattice. This will head off another detached retina, hopefully. It’s no big deal and no downtime, but it felt like my eyeball was being jackhammered. I took Advil in the car before driving home. He said no activity restrictions. Yay!
She’s in Dallas! That was my biggest problem with Dallas weather in my 28 years there. In October, you were ready for some sort of fall, and it was still summer. That was how it was in Chicago with winter. April and May could be really, really cold.
Unseasonably warm and nice here, too. It was 69 yesterday! Cooler today, so my hill climb was perfect. The leg still lets me know that I need to treat it with respect. I will give it a week…
Speaking of varying speed or direction during walking… Now I recall when I had a couple of sessions with PT, she made me walk backwards on the treadmill. This is supposed to reset muscles and get them ready to perform more efficiently.
