CBB- that is really cool. Good luck with all the planning.

We will all meet up at Michael’s daughter’s wedding!

LOL Bunsen.

Well, we (my daughter and I) had lovely weather for our 10K (actually 6.5 miles) hilly trail race. Mid-50s, overcast, but no actual rain, not even the usual Oregon drizzle. Apparently last year was 40s and pouring rain–which is the forecast for tomorrow. The trails were lovely–mountain bike single-track, not slippery, and some fire roads. 1000 feet of climbing in the first 3 miles, then pretty much steadily downhill, mostly. Some rollers that were a blast to run (my daughter didn’t like them as much as I did). I was NOT DFL, to my astonishment. I was last as we started, passed two 30-something women (who were really struggling with the uphill) in the first mile, then passed a 45-ish man who was suffering from leg cramps at about mile 5. (There were about 100 people running the 10K and about 200 running a half-marathon on the same course–a bunch of them passed me in the last mile, so they’d gone 12 miles in the time it took me to do 5 or so…) I may have even won my age group–I think I was the only one in my age group.

I love trail runs, so much easier on the legs and the knees than roads and sidewalks.

Sounds like it was a phenomenal course , dmd77, and a lot of fun!

MOWC, adult milkshakes - isn’t that the real raison d’etre for all this fitness stuff we do?

Dmd- that sounds fun. I’m not much of a trail runner, but smooth single track I could do!

Dmd, that is awesome. Glad the rain pounded Seattle and provided a nice dry window for your run. Are you up for the Xterra next?

Did a double on Saturday. In the morning, did a 2 hour trail ride on my cross bike cause the winds were gusting to 40 mph and I didn’t want to deal with that on the road. Glad I did; the fall foliage was gorgeous but the leaves on the ground made for a couple of exciting moments when taking curves and turns at speed. In the evening, did the first of 6 workouts in phase 3 of my parallettes training. This is where I start linking together specific movements into 2 or 3 movement combinations in preparation for putting all the combinations together into a continuous flow. Each week for the next 2 weeks, I will have 3 days with each day consisting of a different set of combinations. Over and above the physical challenge, now I’ve got to remember the sequencing of all the moves in their respective combinations. That will be tougher for me than the physical demands! I ended with my sets of chin ups and dips using weights hanging from a weight belt. The theory there is to use enough weight to limit me to not more than 10 reps so as to maintain muscular overload that promotes muscle growth and strength.

Sounds like a good ride and workout, Michael. I hate wind for running, but it’s worse on a bike!

The winds can be brutal. A head wind is bad enough but if the winds are from the side, the windage of the bike’s structure can make bike control a real challenge if there are strong gusts. I did a ride last April 4 called the Hell of Hunterdon. It was supposed to be a challenging, hilly road and trail ride of 82 miles. Day of, winds were gusting to 45-50 mph. At one point, at about 40 miles in, while on a back country road, a huge gust hit the group I was with from the side and I watched the rider in front of me literally get blown, bike and all, into the middle of the oncoming lane. One second, she was pedaling in front of me and the next, she was pedaling in the center of the oncoming lane as if she had been picked up and moved laterally. It was astonishing to see. Her bike was equipped with deep dish aero wheels which acted like sails in those side winds. At that point, we all looked at each other and said “Nah, this ride isn’t happening” and we abandoned the route and returned to the start. But on the other hand, when those winds were at our backs…

Crazy weather - in a good kind of way. My brother who is normally deer hunting in Michigan November 15 - often in a little snow - is out on Lake Erie today in his boat catching trophy walleye and perch in 60+ degree weather. He’ll be forced to put the boat in storage this week due to the storage facility rules, but what a great extension of summer/fall it’s been.

D1 and 2 who have been home for the weekend and I are heading out for a trail walk in a bit before they head back out of town.

Enjoy, abasket! It is 40 degrees outside and really, really dump and grey. Ugh. I got stuck in traffic yesterday and ended up bagging my exercise plans because I needed to clean the house and was short on time. So vacuuming, toilet scrubbing, and mopping were my only exercise-like activities!

Did a 3 mile recovery run this morning in Charlotte with one of the ladies in our group who I admire. She is a slower runner and not a waif, but is really dedicated and has engaged the same coach (also a member of our group) as my daughter. This woman does every workout- before work- and had a successful 2:35 half marathon yesterday. I’m proud of her. My husband joined us for his first run of the season as he transitions to running from biking as his main activity for the winter.

Now we are in beautiful Asheville for the day/night and my daughter has found us a route for the morning. It’s hilly here- as in “mountains.”

Congratulations to your D, CBB! Glad you’re back to your mileage, Sabaray. Frosty adult milkshakes, yum!

Bunsen, no fun in your drab wet weather or the necessity of chores. My D lives in your town and has been updating me with the lousy weather of the past week:( Contrary to our wishes, she’s keeping her fingers crossed for a warm Christmas here!

We finally, finally had a few cooler days with highs in the mid 70’s. I walked 3.5 with my husband and then ran 4 this morning. It seemed more difficult today to get the breathing right. I slowed down so I wouldn’t gasp :o I really believe there are people (like me) who just will never have the aerobic capacity to be fast runners. It’s frustrating!

Oh Green Bay Packers, that was almost a miracle.

It is nice and sunny outside now… except I probably pulled a muscle in my back lifting heavy household stuff yesterday. So depressing. The back was aching a little this morning but really started to hurt as soon as I decided to go outside. Argh. So depressing. :frowning: Vitamin I and rest.

BE CAREFUL BB!! Backs are tricky as I’m sure you know. Yes, vitamins and rest.

Nice day PlantMom. Mid 70’s must feel lovely to you! You always manage to get lots of miles in one way or another. Unless that is really a goal, I wouldn’t worry about speed. It might very gradually come with time. I think consistency is more important - or a few intervals if that’s what you’re looking for - but if my breathing is ragged, the run is ragged!

UGH. After I about threw up watching only the last few minutes of that Packers game (really, they deserved the loss and maybe losing to the Lions - which this year about ='s “rock bottom” they will regroup or SOMETHING!) I topped off the earlier park walk in the day with a 30 minute run. Icing on the cake. So to speak.

Ran my 10-miler this morning. Weather was perfect - cool & overcast the whole way. I finished in just a smidge under 2 hours. However, I am feeling totally wrecked now! My feet & legs were really feeling it in the last 2 miles. The idea of adding another 3.1 miles to that sounds really unappealing right now. I’ve got 6 weeks to go to the HM…

Gertrude, congrats and I don’t know that sounds like a very good time for 10 miles! Take the advice of the pros here as to how to run and taper during the next 6 weeks!

Only drank the last night on my greenbrier trail mini vacation with friends!. Ran and rode my new mountain bike on the trail. One day I did a 40 miler that was a killer. The trail weaves back and forth so I thought I’d have an easy ride back with the wind at my back. Unfortunately the wind was pretty wicked on most of the 20 miles back. Guess I didn’t realize how much more difficult it was versus a typical ride on my carbon fiber road bike.

Bunsen- I hope your back feels better soon!
Gertrude- you are ready! If you can do 10 in training, you can do 13 in a race. I promise.

I feel like an overstuffed pig. Daughter and son in law led us on a brewery and food tour of Ashville, which is a terrific town. Very Colorado-ish, but you can breathe! We had incredible beers and finished up the vending with gourmet hot chocolate.

Oh- before we even left Charlotte this morning we had Duck’s donuts, which are made to order and absolutely incredible, Sabaray is familiar with them.

“Gertrude- you are ready! If you can do 10 in training, you can do 13 in a race. I promise.”

I second that. Marathoners rarely run more than 20 miles in practice. Somehow, they manage to run six more in a real race!

Gertrude, you’ve totally got it.

That’s my new donut rule - I can only have donuts if they’re from Duck’s. Fortunately, they’re about an hour away from me! Why do I run…so I can enjoy food!

5.5 miles this morning, legs felt good after resting yesterday. We took the pups to the park Saturday afternoon and I was exhausted Saturday night.
