Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

20/20 class at lunchtime. I like when we do some weight work!!!

3 miles this morning- no rain but it’s supposed to come back.

One adult child still here–all our other guests departed over the weekend. I managed to get in a 3 mile walk and a yoga classes. Yoga class was curtesy of one of our guests (friend of D2’s who I had never met). She’s a musician who supports herself teaching yoga and spinning. I enjoyed her class.

A neighbor gave me his Airdyne and I always think of idad when I’m riding it. Which I need to do, if I can stand it. The knee is REALLY bad, and the left one is getting finicky because I’m overcompensating. Rescheduled surgery for firt week of July, as I concluded I didn’t want to have to deal with any complications while out of town. Am going to NYC later this week and expect to be doing a lot of walking. Could be interesting…

CD- The Airdyne might really hurt your knee. It’s a lot of cranking. Make sure your seat is high enough. Your leg should just have the very slightest bend at the knee when fully extended (downstroke of the pedal). You don’t want to be shifting your butt from side to side, but you don’t want your legs bent while you pedal. Michael can probably explain this better.

Nice working out everyone. Stay warm, BB! Your mileage is so impressive, MoWC! Love the short 7.5, Sabaray. I hope that some day I can view that as short!!! Happy to hear your update, CBB. Mixed marriages and questioning can strengthen both partners’ beliefs and create new understanding. My husband of almost 30 years and I have had this experience

I am glad Thanksgiving weekend is over and I can’t wait to get back into a normal routine of just about everything if that’s at all possible for the next month of holiday festivities. My son–the son who broke his collarbone in a bicycle accident last fall–was t-boned yesterday by an SUV. He now has a broken scapular bone on the same side. So glad he’s okay, but so angry about the SUV driving man who blew out of an intersection and almost killed my kid. Grrrr.

Turkey has now been converted to turkey enchiladas, a butternut (turkey broth) soup, a braised garlicky turkey and pinto bean dish adapted from the Bean Bible, and one turkey vegetable barley soup. Scram, turkey!

Exercise has been only walking, hiking, and riding the bike. My neck has been sore and I haven’t run since Wednesday :frowning:

@CountingDown, seat height is a highly individualistic thing and every single formula out there is a guesstimate based on averages. Having a seat too high or too low can be a significant contributor to knee pain. Here’s how I set my seat height.

First I find an approximate starting position. I raise the seat so that while sitting on the bike with my butt squarely and evenly in the saddle and with the right pedal positioned at the lowest/most distant position in the pedal stroke, the heel of my right foot just touches the pedal platform with my leg fully extended. I then start raising the seat a few millimeters at a time and test each position by pedaling for a few minutes. What I look for is either my hips starting to rock or my legs feeling not quite extended as I go through the pedal stroke. After a minute or so of pedaling at a given height, I raise the seat another couple of mm and watch for my pelvis rocking. I keep repeating this process until my hips just start to rock. I then start dropping the saddle a millimeter at a time until the rocking disappears and I feel like my sitz bones are are solidly on the seat, my legs are getting a full extension and the power of my pedal stroke is fluid.

But that’s only part of the picture. What is happening with your feet is also critical. You want the balls of your feet over the pedal spindles. You do not want the cages so tight that they impede the ability of your feet to rotate as may feel natural to your body. You want to watch your knees and make sure they are traveling in a single (Sagittarius) plane of motion and not deviating from side to side as you pedal. Remember that it’s all one kinetic chain from your hips down to your feet and any deviations in proper form or technique originating at your hips or ankles will impact on your knees.

I am very glad your son is mostly okay, PlantMom! You must have had a big turkey - our leftovers are mostly gone.

I am determined to not allow my weight to creep this month. Happily, my Pilates instructor is back so I will have a session with her this week.

Can you believe we’ve been at this for almost six years? I am thinking ahead…

PlantMom- that is scary and I hope your son heals fast. I’ve heard of so many vehicle accidents lately. It scares me.

Plant mom, that really is so scary. Glad your son is relatively ok considering the circumstances!

Goodness, PlantMom. Hope he is going to heal quickly. Hugs.

I walked all over city after work. Poked into a few stores… Exercise in futility.

Adding my good vibes for your son Plantmom - hopefully his luck turns now!

6 years! Truly amazing - and a pleasure.

I had the last of our turkey for lunch today.

In case anyone has any cranberry sauce left over, a little birdie (me) is telling you that cranberry sauce slightly warmed is an AMAZING treat over a scoop of good vanilla ice cream. Just saying. One scoop.

Interesting and humorous article in Bicycling Magazine online that is applicable in many respects to runners too.

So true! Many of those side effects are experienced by runners.

One good thing about getting older - I outgrew my EIB.

It seemed like such a short weekend and I am now back in China again. Only for a week and this is my last trip. I am telling myself that I can get through this.

The sun now sets so early that I had to settle for 5 miles on the hotel gym treadmill when I got here instead of running outside. At least I got the run in.

CBBBlinker-I am really glad that your husband is coming around re your daughter’s engagement. Hopefully you can move on to the fun joyful part of wedding planning with less stress.

MK - good info in the article. I have always experienced Racers Cough since my teens. I’ve had Brain Fog 24/7 my entire life.

Brain fog doesn’t seem to be related to running for me…but most of the others, I can relate!

Prompted by MOWC’s incredible numbers, I took a look and am not impressed with mine. Always next year, right? This has been a hard year in so many ways.

More rain this morning. Just can’t face driving to the gym to get on the treadmill. I keep telling Mr. Sabaray we need one - he takes the view it would turn into a giant clothes hanger.

Sabaray- I was afraid I wouldn’t really use my treadmill that much and I put off getting one for years. It will be 2 years in February and it is crucial to my well being. The key is getting a really good one, having fans and the ability to have the room at a cool enough temperature and having a decent tv. It is safe, always available and is great for impromptu speed work.

Note to sabaray, don’t compare yourself to MOWC. You are doing great and are an inspiration to us all!

Sorry plantmom about the car wreak and glad your s is ok. And so happy the priest straightened out your H CBBlinker. One of the big problems we all have is to worry about how other people are going to react.

Went for a 3 mile run yesterday and will try for a nice walk today if the weather cooperates.
