Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

sabaray- I’ve been worse about my diet sodas, too. I am still within moderation (less than 1 a day), but I don’t need them. 3.5 miles- clear and 32 degrees. Hard to get out of that warm bed.

I got 5 miles in on the hotel treadmill after work. I’m looking forward to going home tomorrow and I’m especially glad that this is my last trip to China. The travel the last 6 months has been grueling.

sabaray - I have a terrible Diet Coke habit. Every once in a while I decide I’m going to give it up or cut way back but my good intentions rarely last very long. I hope you have better luck than I do!

Which is worse, a terrible Diet Coke habit or the terrible chocolate martini habit I used to have - and still must resist :),

Your martini habit sounds like a lot more fun, Michael!

You have had a lot of travel, C3Baker - I’m still amazed you trained and ran a marathon (and did so well!). Several of the women I run with have grueling travel schedules - I couldn’t do it.

Big pup walk this am post-run - Sabadog turns four today so I figured that merited a special walk - and some yogurt. I need to eat and drink like he does - measured portions, ample water and the occasional treat. The Labrador diet!

^^^ Such a good point Sabaray - though I’m sure the dogs would like to eat like us!

C3Baker, your travel has made me tired just reading it- welcome home!!!

The Labrador diet! Lol!!! My cats are all on autofeeders. That way, they are not gorging themselves to death. I am sure my cats would love to eat like us! I sometimes feel like I need a human autofeeder - for me!

Not much exercise for last night. Came home late and felt so exhausted that I crashed on the couch and almost fell asleep. Iron deficiency is rearing its ugly head, I’m afraid.

C3Baker, you are amazing. To be able to train and run a marathon with this crazy travel schedule… Gold medal.

I may have told this story before but I stopped diet soda cold turkey–I drank
3-5 cans a day, sometimes more. I went with a friend to a guy who held group sessions to help people stop smoking. I didnt smoke and went to support my friend; she found out she was pregnant and was having trouble kicking her pack a day habit. During the seasion the guy talked about artficial sweeteners and diet soda in really negative terms–I cant even remember what he said. I walked out of there and never again had a diet soda or any type of diet drink. Its been 18 years. Now if that would happen with chocolate I would be thrilled–saying this as I think back on all the chocolate hostess gift truffles I had over Thanksgiving weekend. Not a pretty picture. Going to walk with a friend this pm.

I was doing really really well with no diet soda so I’m telling myself I can do it again and stick to it this time. I don’t like the taste of our tap water, so I started buying bottled water that I would “reward” myself with after a long run. I just need to start drinking it all the time instead of saving it for a reward. I think the artificial sweeteners are contributing to my recent weight struggles so eliminating that blasted Diet Coke might be part of the solution. I felt so thirsty this morning after not even a mile. I think I need a diet reset!

Mr. Sabaray had to go get lab work this morning for a follow up visit next week; he’s been doing well with logging his blood pressure but not so good on the diet/exercise front. He needs to get his marching orders.

I have kicked my diet coke habit. I didn’t really set out to do it intentionally, but as bromfield notes, it simply lost its appeal after learning how bad it is for you. I’ll have one very occasionally as a treat. I noticed that I always feel the need to snack on something crunchy/salty when I have one. My hubby is thoroughly hooked on diet drinks - diet Coke and diet Snapple. I hate having to shell out money & haul this heavy stuff from the store when it’s just bad news. He’s made so many changes on his own this year though that I don’t feel like fighting this battle with him right now, or maybe never since it really needs to be his choice.

Unfortunately, it seems that diet sodas really mess with your body’s perception of sugar and how it processes your food. See http://time.com/3746047/diet-soda-bad-belly-fat/ for instance. But I am not sure which is worse, that, or regular soda.

I find San Pellegrino to be a nice treat. Or Arrowhead sparkling flavored water. But it is tough not to have diet soda like Coke Zero, especially at restaurants. I do feel like the more I exercise, the less I crave diet sodas.

“I find San Pellegrino to be a nice treat.”

Yes! Love it. (Also good with a splash of pomegranate or orange juice a la a mimosa once in a while) We buy cases of it at Costco. SP and decaf green tea from TJ are our regular dinner drinks.

I am lucky that no one in my family is addicted to sodas, diet or not. Kiddos’ team coaches in HS labeled sodas as evil anti-performance drinks (sugar spike! carbonation! chemicals!), and that was the end of us buying those 2-liter bottles or cans…

Did a nice ride at White Rock Lake today. Very little wind, sunny, and upper 50’s. No complaints!

We used to be a Diet Coke addicts, but gave it up years ago with some of H’s health issues. I will have one as a treat just a few times a year. I’ve had some really complicated dental problems so giving up sodas of all kinds has been a necessity as well. Today I saw a specialist who recommended turmeric in my tea as an anti-inflammatory. It has a taste I don’t mind if a little honey is added. Does anyone else consume turmeric (besides in a curry)?

I ran 3.5 miles this morning and we walked tonight. Still warm, still humid, but I am wearing capris instead of shorts right now-an improvement!

I’m pretty much ho-hum when it comes to beverages in general. Not much passes my mouth except water and one cup of coffee 4-5 times a week in the morning. One less battle to fight!

I realized tonight that I am officially addicted to making my goal on my Fitbit Charge. I have my goal set at 11,000 daily which really has been a breeze to meet since I got it in September - until the time changed and the nights have been shorter. I have still made my #'s daily, but it was nothing for me to have 15K, 20K and more regularly.

I was planning a run when I got home but just as I got in the door I got a weird phone call on my cell. Something about possible fraudulent activity on my Macy’s account. Problem is, I haven’t used a Macy’s card in two years - in fact, only got it for one big purchase then and haven’t used it - dont’ even have it - since. They sent a Macy’s/AMEx card that I never activated. Long story short, I spend over an hour with the probably scammers AND Macy’s getting things straightened out and fully cancelling anything they had on me. SOOOO annoyed!!! By that time it was dark. I didn’t want to turn around and go back to the gym.

I resorted to a youtube cardio/strength workout. Really, not bad!! 30 minutes and I worked up a small sweat. Cardio, planks, burpees, mountain climbers, a few yoga stretches at the end. I’m going to hang onto that youtube link! It was The CafeMoms Studio.

Needless to say, that combined with a evening pup walk, I ended up with plenty of steps. Run tomorrow when the temp should be warmer.

I take a curcumin extract capsule, which is the good stuff in turmeric. I don’t like the taste mixed with beverages.

DW drinks caffeine-free diet Pepsi, which just has me shaking my head, what is the point? You don’t even get a pick-me-up from it.

She won’t stop though. What can you do? You have to own your choices.

No diet Coke yesterday, lots of water. Felt much better after Reformer class - my legs have felt like lead this week but enjoyed a good workout last night. Today is a rest day, other than pup walks. I need to get to the store! The cupboard is bare.

I drink only water, tea , coffee and wine. I have a diet soda maybe 3-4 times a year.

I am not nearly at the fitness level as most people here, but I walked/ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes 4 times this week. I just have to stick with it.

I have an idea…I’m going to drink wine and Michael’s chocolate martinis every time I want a diet Coke. Sounds like a reasonable plan to me! I should probably start looking for a new job first, though. :))

Exercise is a huge stress reliever for me. Mr. Sabaray claims I’m simply traded one addiction (donuts) for another (exercise). If that’s the case, I’ll take it. It’s all about doing what’s best for you and your other life commitments - I am lucky to have a supportive network of runners and Pilates enthusiasts to spend my social time with.

@FallGirl, it’s not about the intensity as much as the dedication to something. And you are worthy of that - 4 times a week is GREAT!

H takes a canned diet drink to work along with a few pieces of fruit.

DD2 loves Diet Coke - she is a size 4 at 5’6" so no weight issue there. She drinks a lot of water with exercise.

A agree about lugging the stuff home (my job). I will buy cans of Diet Coke when running a special, so DD2 can take some back with her to college. I don’t always have it at home on school breaks - she can go w/o. I have limited $$. It does make DDs appreciative of the things we do for them, out of love. They know we do think of their ‘likes’. Send them back with some of the grocery items that makes their life easier, plus items that I buy in bulk from Sam’s/Costco.

I had not made Mrs Field’s cookies since Christmas 2008 (the year before my stage III cancer). Well I had a cookie exchange yesterday, so made them - they are as delicious as ever. Recipe called for Hershey’s shaved chocolate, but the store had the chips (and only needed 8 oz while the bag was 12 oz). So this morning I put some chips in my oatmeal - a few goes a long way for chocolate lovers
