Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Abasket–dont beat yourself up. Sometimes you can fit in more exercise–sometimes not, but overall you have been consistent, which is something that few people can say!

abasket, this time of year is really hard. You are one of the most consistent exercisers I know! And how I wish I could have your attitude about food! Mr. Sabaray has a varied schedule as well, so much of the pup walk duties fall to me. I choose to get up at 4 or 4:30 3-4 times a week to run with a group - but that’s also a social outlet for me. Classes are just me trying new things - I’m not getting any younger and there will come a point when I won’t be able to do or even try some of the things I really enjoy, so it’s just a big part of my life right now.

I would also point out that a lot of my activities result in a not so tidy house, piles of laundry and a Christmas tree that doesn’t have any lights or ornaments. It’s in the stand, though! Oh, and I have a lot of baking to do for various commitments. And most of the presents I’ve purchased are for angel tree children. So I’ll be scrambling here in a little bit!

So, today I’m grateful for all of you - the best bunch of cheerleaders around!

Glad to know that I am not the only one struggling to maintain the life we love and want and the life we need to/have to do - especially in this season.

Putting my eye on the prize of this Friday when work responsibilities will ease up a bit and even later today when D2 comes home for Christmas break and will be a big help in all things home and Christmas.

Alrighty, just downed my kale egg casserole and yogurt and cherries at a breakfast break here at work - let’s go do this day!!!

abasket–you ARE so accomplished in regularly in doing something! Often of late I only get to walk a few miles and I worry all my gains in running will evaporate. I haven’t been to the gym to do my upper body weights nearly enough. 'Tis the season and I’ve fallen hard for some sinfully sweet or rich treats. @deb922 said:

This gets at the heart of the issue for me. When I’m beating myself up, it’s usually because when I haven’t been doing what I want or need to do, it’s because I’ve been doing something else I don’t want to do or something I regret–stupid errands, drudge housework, getting stuck in the electronic universe. Or maybe it’s easier to understand if say I beat myself up about lack of exercise when it’s really something else that’s a problem. Proxy guilt…Keep up with all you DO do! You’re an inspiration here

At the gym. Treadmill is clearly more accurate than home elliptical. Did a 13 min mile . Walking/running. Accidentally hit cool down when I meant to slow down. Ended up doing 1.4 mi in just under 19 minutes. Now on the bike.

abasket-you are one of the most consistent exercisers I know! One thing that I think is especially impressive is the variety of things that you do - running, walking, all kinds of different classes. This is a hectic time of year and your list of things that you did after work yesterday was very impressive! Enjoy the time with your D2 at home and don’t get bent out of shape if you don’t have 100% attendance in the exercise department these next few weeks.

Had a nice 4 mile run last night with the running club. We started and finished at a local running store that offered us a 20% discount so it was an expensive run!

Does anyone have recommendations for bluetooth headphones for running? H would like some for Christmas and as I read reviews I get very conflicted on what to get!

Ok. 45 minutes today. 19 min treadmill, 11 min bike, 15 min machines. Anyone have a reasonable (otherwise I’ll just try my standard low cal) Kickstart “diet” ? I looked at the 30
Day thing. Way too restrictive for me.

jym- elliptical miles and treadmill miles are not equivalent in pace. You are supported on the elliptical. It could even be slower if you really have it set at a heavy tension.

3 miles this morning. Sort of gloomy but not cold.

C3Baker- I am an “early adopter” and even I have been leery of the Bluetooth headphones. It seems like no one is really thrilled with them. There is an occasional good review, but a lot of dissatisfaction. I would LOVE to be free of the stupid cord, but, alas, at this point I’m still winding the cord under my jacket or shirt.

I have a pair of jaybird Bluetooth headphones. I think I’ve had them for 18 months or so. I have been really happy with them. They work great and I haven’t had any problems with them.

H had a pair also but his stopped working soon after he got them. Amazon took them back with no problems. He doesn’t mind corded headphones so he didn’t feel the need to get another pair.

We had a thunderstorm this morning!!! Wow. Last night weather was just awful. Lots of fallen trees, big puddles everywhere, traffic was a major mess. Glad I was not in the road! I did what I could with my home contraptions: rubber bands, Bosu, free weights, and my own weight. My arms are a bit sore even though it was 20 min max.

H bought me a Murel set of Bluetooth earbuds. They had great reviews, but I experienced a lot of skipping & can’t put my ipod in my waist pouch - it has to be closer. So those are going back. I picked up a replacement set of Backbeats at CostCo last weekend for $49 - so far those are terrific!

A good thunderstorm sounds kind of good -that would mean it was spring here!! But sorry for the tree damage - always such a bummer - you can’t replace decades old trees.

I wondered about the bluetooth headphones. Costco had some I was looking at - can’t remember the brand.

This is what I got: http://www.costco.com/Plantronics-BackBeat%C2%AE-GO-2–Wireless-Earbuds-with-Charging-Case.product.100235709.html

They have one customer review, which rated them low for comfort. I find them very comfortable so far, using the smallest of the 3 sizes of earpieces they give you.

My jaybird a go in my waist pack. It does have to be in the front, I usually put my phone off to the side. But Bluetooth won’t go through the body, the directions I got with mine said that.

ABasket—any chance you can borrow a running stroller for the dog?

@jym626 : my “kickstart” diet is “take the food I want to eat–and then eat half to three-quarters of the amount I want to eat.” If I’m hungry, too effing bad. Have a glass of water and wait until the next meal. I can do it every day for about a week, and then I ease up a bit. My goal is to eat my regular diet–but eat quantities that lead to slow and steady weight loss. It’s taken me three and a half years to lose 56 pounds, 8 pounds to go, and I will never be able to eat all I want to (obviously, because eating what I wanted to is how I ended up 64 pounds overweight), but I haven’t felt like I was depriving myself either.

WOW!! Congrats, dmd!
I bought a bunch of fruits and vegetables and a roasted chicken (just had a “hankerin” for that, as they say) and hope to cut back on unhealthy stuff. Will also watch portion control. I’ve done it before-- just have to get in that mindset again. You guys are an inspiration.

As for distance on ellipticals and treadmills and such. I really don’t care so much about that. Will attend more to how long I exercise. Just booked a walk with friends Fri morning.

You guys who work full time and manage to workout almost every day – I am seriously impressed. I don’t work now, which is why I can do as much as I do – but when I did work I definitely found it so much harder to fit in exercise. Especially in the winter. My last full-time job I worked an evening shift, so I could exercise in the morning, and I’ve had other jobs where my hours were very flexible. But I could never drag myself out of bed at 5 am, which so many of you do. So I’m in awe of any of you who do that.

Day 3 of the reroofing is done and over. The old roof is now off–what a back-breaking job. Kudos to anyone capable of doing such physical labor and being able to balance on the steep pitch. Yikes. I did get out for a walk so altogether I got in about 6 miles today. I made chocolate chip walnut brownies for the construction workers. Had to sample one, but otherwise the rest of the batch is gone with them.

So nice of you to do that PlantMom - roofing does seem like hard work - and often in the heat of summer!

The doggie stroller - GREAT idea for me - not so great for my sniffing loving dog!!
