Just run a marathon and you will be fine.

What a yucky day it is!!! Dmd’s weather must have drifted up the coast and reached us. This seriously messes up my plans for tonight.
@BunsenBurner – sorry about that. It’s still soaking here but at least it’s not 35 and soaking. My exercise for today was a decent walk with the dogs (all three of us got soaked to the skin but at least we got out) and then unclogging the storm drains below our house and getting a whole lot of fallen leaves dealt with.
Question for the more experienced: Sunday I ran five miles. Not a problem, not sore afterwards. Yesterday (Monday) I went for a nice slow easy recovery swim (after a reasonable breakfast and a decent lunch two hours before) and completely bonked–shaky and ravenous–after about 35 minutes (2/3 mile, so slow). Sore as heck today so taking it easy. Any theories on what’s going on? The last time I bonked like that was four hours into our Crater Lake bike ride, and that was HARD.
Happy Birthday, Ohio! Pie–I choose raspberry rhubarb, or pecan, or coconut cream, or key lime…oh just give them all to me (with a butter pastry crust)! All kinds of pampering in your party, MoWC!
Escaped the noise of roofing day 2 morning with an 8 mile run. It was in the upper 50’s when I left. Almost perfect. I wouldn’t call my run easy, but I knew I could do it which helped immensely
dmd- sounds like sort of a delayed reaction to the 5 miler- or else you are coming down with something???
Dmd, I agree with MOfWC, it sounds to me that you could be coming down with something. Hopefully it was a 24 hour kind of bug thing. Take it easy today.
Happy Birthday Ohio! I like how you celebrate. Well, mostly the pie. Apple pie is my favorite, but I like them all.
Never ended up doing any formal exercise yesterday, but plenty of walking to get over 20K steps. Tonight is running club and it is my first time running with the club since the time change and the need to run with head lamps.
Sunday we are running the Hot Chocolate 15K in St. Louis with S and SIL. The forecast right now is for thunderstorms, 90% chance of rain. I sure hope the forecast improves as we get closer to the race. H and I will be fine (I have my nifty new Lulu rain jacket!) but I worry about the guys. Especially SIL, he takes a full time courseload in engineering and works 2 jobs so has had minimal opportunity to train for the race. I’m sure neither of them have any decent running apparel for the weather, so I am guessing an early Christmas present shopping trip will be happening on Saturday.
I like the Hot Chocolate series a lot- and I am not a fan of the big, for profit race series. The jackets/sweatshirts they give are wonderful! I’ve done 2 of them and I plan to do the next one here in February. Ours is pretty hilly, but they do a great job on the start/finish/awards.
Anything with hot chocolate is a winner in my book!
dmd, the bonking/soreness could be a bug. It could also be the result of the run. “Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness” is just that - delayed! It can take up to 48 hours to hit you. And even if it wasn’t DOMS, sometimes we just need more recovery than we think. I wouldn’t worry too much about it at this point unless you find it becomes a recurring occurrence.
BB - the pie to marathon conversion is an Idad reminder that weight loss is really more about food calorie reduction than exercise.
Speaking of which had a 600/700 calorie hill workout AND finished off the other half of the cherry pie which still puts me at a 2000/2100 cherry pie calorie surplus.
Lol, Ohio! Ah, just run three more hill workouts by the end of the week. It is only Tuesday!
I was a little discouraged earlier today - and recently - reading all your posts. Hours of classes, miles on the road/pavement/at the gym…I am doing all I can to keep my head above water and get in 30-45 minutes of exercise (besides walking) 4ish times a week. Am I ever going to have the time to make more progress??? I sometimes wonder.
I can’t/won’t find more time in the morning for exercise. I am responsible for getting my pup a morning walk before I leave the house for work at 7:20am - even if I wanted to get up before 6 to have running time, it couldn’t be much time and I’m not willing to run in the dark alone - not a good idea.
When I get home from work there is maybe an hour and a half before it gets good and dark. Pup needs a walk again during that time! I can squeeze in 30-40 minutes or so before the darkness sets in, but that’s it. And the gym is at work, so I really don’t want to track back there, nor can I mentally do more than 3-4 miles on the treadmill/track. That would be enough punishment to make me want to stop running.
Sigh. I know I’m doing what I can and it is good that I have other obligations - work, home stuff, interests, etc. that keep me busy especially in this year #1 of empty nest. But man, I’m feeling jealous of the flexibility to make better gains.
Well, that’s how I was feeling earlier. Not beating myself up quite so much right now. Since I’ve been home from work I walked the dog, ran 3 miles, made dinner for my S who came to have dinner with me (my H has weird work times - he works for our park system so depending on light, events, etc. he is gone alot), did some laundry, took two phone calls from D1 and D2, reviewed a paper due for D2, emptied the dishwasher, showered, baked dessert for S to take home - who knows what else! Glass half full, still managed to get in 18,500 + steps.
It’s the season. Have to watch expectations! Finding an extra 1.5 hours in the day just isn’t going to happen! But man, sometimes I’m jealous!!!
abasket - I can tell you that you are doing way more than I am at this time!
Be proud of yourself! This is the worst season for training for races, at least in my neck of the woods. You are doing great - I am jealous of your consistency with exercise.
Thanks BB. I’m the first to always say, “this is your own game to play” - and I live by that - I guess I just get a little frustrated by the game I HAVE to play right now! Also, winter sucks. The daylight hours in spring/summer/early fall make the day so much longer.
I think Sabaray has talked about this component before - I get FRANTIC if I don’t get my “schedule” in - it’s as if I feel like if I miss my scheduled exercise, all lost pounds, inches, etc. will come right back! Ridiculous, right? Still so afraid of bad habits - or no good habits - coming back even after 3+ years of “schedule”.
Abasket- Walking the dog is more than most people do! I think you are doing great balancing everything and still getting in a good amount of exercise! I use my weekends to get in some longer duration stuff.
Abasket, I know exactly what you mean , holy cow, I feel like I’m lucky if I can shoehorn 30 minutes in! So my solution is to concentrate on creating a habit – even if I only have 20 minutes for exercising, I try to do something, and try to feel like the accomplishment is in the continuity.
DMD, dehydration?
abasket, your dilemma is not unusual but understandably frustrating! And I know exactly how you feel when you say that you feel that if you miss a workout, all your gains will be lost. Been there!
One of the fastest growing trends in the fitness industry is “express fitness” workouts for those who are time challenged. If the right exercises are chosen and attention is given to form, focus and an efficient flow, a remarkably effective full body workout can be had in 30-35 minutes. And if part of the difficulty is finding the time or inclination to leave your house and drive back to the gym, working out at home can be as uncomplicated as a stability ball, a couple of chairs, the edge of your dining room table and your body weight to cover all of the functional movement patterns of squatting, lunging, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting.
I’m with you Abasket! Too much going on. I’m giving myself a pass but it’s still frustrating. The worst part is that is it unseasonably warm here and I know it. I know that I should be enjoying this weather but then I’m not.
Instead I’m at the mall trying to get gifts for people who don’t need anything lol! Or going to parties and eating what I shouldn’t.
And I’m going to New Orleans this weekend. I’m excited but I don’t plan on dieting in New Orleans. I’m going to bring my running clothes, it’s suppose to be in the high 70’s! But even a run won’t mitigate all the food. And then I come home and all my people show up 3 days later. Which I am excited about but I’m not ready. And I’ll not get my exercise in and I’ll eat a ton.
So there’s my whine for the day. First world problems for which I am very grateful for.
abasket - I know what you mean. I am doing 30 min on the treadmill and the dog walks and except for yoga 3x/week that is all I can do right now. I too feel frustrated with the short winter days and not being able to get outside as well as holiday season busyness.
