@MichaelNKat, today it rained, so I did the Precor recumbent bicycle in my neighborhood’s fitness center. I noticed that rather than feeling it in my hamstrings and glutes, as is the norm when I ride my bicycle, my quads felt really strained after a half hour. Do you think I had the seat positioned too far away, or too close?
@Nrdsb4, as a general rule, to get your seat in a ballpark position on a recumbent bike, sit with your feet on the pedals and then pedal one leg forward to the fullest travel of the pedal. Place the heel of that foot squarely on the pedal. If your leg is not fully extended, slide the seat back so it is. If you find that you are stretching your leg to place your heel on the pedal, the seat is too far back. When the seat is in the right position, your heel will sit on the pedal without stretching your leg and with the ball of your extended foot on the pedal you should have about a 15 degree bend at the knee.
What you are feeling, however, is more likely the result of the different bio-mechanics of a recumbent vs an upright bike. Hip, pelvis and leg relationships are different. Recumbents tend to be more quad centric in the pedal stroke. You can try to compensate for that by consciously pulling your leg back as you push forward with the other leg.
Wow, lots of activity today! Great job, dmd! Way to go, jym!
I’ve been doing the house cleaning stuff all weekend long… Does not look like I’ve done much, but I feel tired. Off to play with my free weights! Gotta keep my body in beach shape. B-)
2 treadmill miles before heading downtown for the eye surgery. “See” y’all on the other side! (I didn’t sleep much last night…)
Here’s to no more vision and eye issues, MOWC!
Prayers for a successful surgery MOWC and a nice soft pillow/recliner/whatever feels good afterwards and a comfy blanket to rest and recoup!
Sending all good mojo for the eye surgery, MOWC.
This morning I ran 5+ miles and hit 10,000 steps on my Fitbit by 7:15! Considering my favorite part of exercise is being done, I’m a happy camper. I had to take H to the airport at 5:30, so went straight to the gym afterward.
Santa needs to bring me new running shoes …
Have an uneventful surgery, MOfWC, and a speedy recovery!
Yesterday was the Hot Chocolate 15K in St. Louis which was a lot of fun. It rained the whole race but it wasn’t too bad. The really really heavy rain didn’t start until an hour or so later. I wore my Lulu rain jacket (thanks for the recommendation, MOWC) and it was great for the rain. It was really warm, though, in the low 60s so I was way too hot. H and I both did the 15K, S and SIL downgraded to the 5K. With classes and finals and everything else they had going on, they just didn’t have any time to train. They finished the 5K and went back to our hotel (right at the start/finish line of the race) and took showers before we finished the 15K. So they were dry and toasty when we came back soaked to the bone. But I enjoyed the race (some great views of the arch!) and the chocolate was surprisingly good.
MOWC-I hope your surgery has gone well and that you’re having a nice easy recovery day now.
Gertrude-you will do great in your half marathon, you have really trained well for it! Enjoy the taper for now!
I’m out, fine and eating pancakes at the famous Pancake Pantry! Thanks for the well wishes.
Glad all went well!
A little fun stuff - here’s a terrific photo of two of our local sports legends, who apparently are friends - Bill Walton and Meb. Both elite athletes, but you couldn’t find two more different body types! My daughter said it reminded her of a photo she’d seen of a Great Dane and a Chihuahua.

I love that picture. I saw it on Meb’s twitter and facebook. I have met both of them- and actually spent an entire evening with Bill Walton back in the late 70s. He is, um, interesting. I am a huge college basketball fan, and he was playing pro by then, but I had followed his UCLA career, so we really hit it off. Meb looks like a midget in that picture.
Glad you’re out and about and looking at photos, MoWC. Fingers crossed for best results!
I’ve had so much turmoil the last few days. Death in family (not unexpected, but just as sad and full of impact as if it had been sudden and out of the blue); roofers everywhere, shingle granules everywhere; other stuff; and the upcoming holidays with family here etc. I’ve uttered more than a few Bahs! I have been walking regularly but have not run since last week, no weights, oh bah humbug! Now that I have that out–and more than a few cookies in
--help me to get back on track. I’m putting on my shoes now, hoping to get to the gym.
I am sorry for your family’s loss, PlantMom - always so difficult, even more so around the holidays.
Glad the cataract surgery went well, MOWC - really jealous of those pancakes!
I have not been doing well on the exercise front - yesterday baked mass quantities of cookies for my mother to contribute to her volunteer organization’s bake sale. Stressing over the holidays - always find myself roped into things I’d rather not do and am coming down with a cold. Bah humbug!
I have had lots of pup walks and am debating going to the gym after work. Will probably not happen today. I’m still in a Nyquil haze.
Glad your eye surgery went well, MOWC.
I had a great weekend–went to Kripalu (yoga retreat center) in the Berkshires (western MA) with three friends. Did two yoga classes on Friday and Saturday and went on a long hike on Sunday. Food was quite healthy. When I got home my H had a dinner of short ribs over polenta with sautéed spinach on the side–loved it! Taking today off. Trainer tomorrow.
I had some set backs this weekend. Dinner out, 2 parties(one was a cookie exchange), S came home, needed to get a lot done - only ended taking one yoga class. What was worse was the eating - especially the cookies. I did get on the treadmill this morning.
The yoga retreat sounds wonderful. I would love to do something like that! FG, you’re here and reporting in - you’re keeping the holiday weight at bay.
Good news is that I was fortunate to get a really nice bonus last week. I am using a portion of it to purchase a membership to my favorite studio. They are adding several classes that look really good and some fun ones over the holidays - cookie detox, anyone? I am excited. Part of the package is a consult to examine and set your goals for the coming year - they’re also adding workshops on nutrition, stress management, flexibility, etc. - all the things I need to focus on.
Is anyone familiar with Whole 30? Done it? Results? Yay or nay?
I’m sorry about the death, PlantMom. It’s never easy.
Sabaray- congratulations on the bonus! My daughter/son in law have done Whole 30 several times. She is really good at food preparation and they stuck to it really well. They usually do it in January. She also was good at identifying some places to eat out where she could stick to it. She has recommended some guidelines to others, so let me know if you want more info. I don’t think I could do it because I’m just not good at preparing my own food.
The yoga retreat sounds great!
Plantmom, sending sympathy to you and your family. <3
I think this is a good time of year to do your best to celebrate the things you DO accomplish, not the shortfalls. Too much on our plates (literally and figuratively) so we have to practice “glass half full”. (wait - wasn’t I the one whining last week??!!)
Congrats on the bonus Sabaray ! Bet you earned it! Be thankful to work for a place that can and does reward you for hard work.
Whole 30 - tell more! Sounds like a food based program???
