Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Thanks for the info, @BunsenBurner; I’ll keep it in mind for the next time I’m sending stuff. I’ll definitely be going back to Staples, though – so easy!

I forgot to mention that while I was shopping today I walked by a sporting goods store having a big going out of business sale. The sale has been going on for a while, and now the % off is much higher. I snagged a pair of CW-X Stabilyx capris for 30% off. These are never on sale, so Merry Christmas to me.

Sorry Bunsen. Feel better!
Well, week one: I hit the gym again today for about 35 min. Also did a brief time on our elliptical this morning. My knees hurt and I wasn’t sure why, until I realized the elevation was set on 10!

Had a big steak for dinner tonight with a friend so will skip the scale tomorrow. But for today-- end of week one 4.5 lbs down! (I know that pace will not continue, but it was nice to see)

Keep at it jym626, you are doing great!

Tuesday night was my first indoor cycling ride in my 8 week hill climbing wattage program. Not my most stellar performance, lol! Was supposed to do a 20 minute warm-up that peaked at 98% FTP, followed by 5x 6 minute intervals at 110% FTP with 2 minutes recovery in between. Did 3 work intervals but during the last recovery interval my focus drifted and I didn’t return to my 95 work cadence as the recovery interval ended. As a result, my electronic trainer loaded on a ridiculous amount of resistance as the fourth work interval started so that my slow cadence would produce the required wattage. I could barely turn the cranks over and just blew my legs up in the first 3 minutes of the 4th work interval. I didn’t have the strength to increase my cadence against the load which would have caused my trainer to lower the resistance to maintain the programmed wattage. I just had to grind through it and ultimately had to manually lower the resistance just to finish the interval. That of course blew me up when it was time for the fifth interval. Was not pretty!

For those who use TRX or another brand of suspension trainer, I was playing around and came up with a way to do bicep work that’s not in the TRX manuals or DVDs that come in the packaging (for that matter, it’s not in the instructor’s manual either). Grab both handles in a supinated grip (palms facing you) and position your body in a “table” position i.e. supine with you arms extended towards the ceiling, your torso and thighs parallel to the floor, your legs bent at the knees and your feet on the floor. Kinda like your body is a stick figure drawing of a chair with your arms the back of the chair, your torso and thighs the seat and your lower legs the front legs of the chair. (The strap length should be adjusted appropriately to enable you to start from a supine parallel position based on your arm length.) Then curl your arms in an arc raising your torso so that your head and your hands meet (as opposed to just pulling with your arms so that your chest and hands meet). It’s a killer - blasts your biceps, and fully engages your abs, glutes and quads to maintain the table position as you do the curls. If you try it, let me know how you like it :).

I’m not doing any exercising, sick as a dog. Trying to get well, I’m hosting Christmas on Sunday. Other than food shopping, if it’s not done, it’s not going to.

But the reason I came here wasn’t to whine. Lucy is offering 30% off sale plus free 2 day shipping. They just marked down a bunch of items so I felt there were some great deals.

I always appreciate when sabaray tells us about the oiselle sales. Thought someone might find something.

^ I got an email this AM from Athleta- 20% off.

Feel better, deb. I was in bed at 9 last night with Niquil, which I hate taking. I hear it raining outside so I am kind of glad I’m not doing much exercise.

With this goofy weather, this has been quite a season for colds and flu bugs. Hope everyone feels better.

Wishing all the under the weather people wellness! Hope you see improvement soon.

Will check out the Lucy site!

Looking for Lulu advice. I just know this is the right place to ask! D would like a pair of Lulu (fitted)workout tights for Christmas. She has only capri length tights now, but would like long, full-length tights (not capri or cropped length) suitable for Seattle cooler weatherwinters. She walks in them, takes a bus, and works out at a gym. She wants no flair, and they should be fitted. Which kind, which kind? Pace tight, Speed tight? She’s a size 4, medium height, (5’6"). Thanks!

Michael- that sounds hard! One of my issues with Athleta (my issue- not theirs) is that I really like to see the items and touch them to see weight of fabric, etc. I don’t seem to need to do that as much with Lulu. We have a really nice Athleta store (and I recently went there and bought some things), but it isn’t right near me (fortunately).

I ran 4 miles this am starting in the dark (barely dark) and it was nice. I did OK with my eyes because there was enough reflection from the clouds. I could have used my headlamp for about 5 minutes.

Sorry, Deb. I hope you feel better!

Plantmom- I would read the reviews of the tights. I think either speed or pace would be great. I would get a size 6 in Lulu sizing.

PlantMom, I live in my Wunder Under leggings. They may be too hot for running, but they are awesome for other stuff! Lulu will hem their long leggings and tights for free, btw.

Thanks for the well wishes.

When I was at lululemon I was trying on the wonderunders and the speed tights. They recommended the speed tights for running and the wonder unders for yoga. I bought the speed tights but wish I bought both. I am a 4 (sometimes even a 2) but a 6 in lulu. I CAN squeeze into the 4’s but the 6’s are much more comfortable.

I have worn my wunder unders for running and have no complaints. I love them.

Sabaray, I am sure they are fine for running… it is just I run too hot! If it is not below 45, I will wear crops or even shorts! I wear my black ones as tights under shirt and sweater dresses.

Sabaray I wish I had known that. I really liked the wonder unders better (less shiny) than the speed tights. I also looked at the reviews and they said that the wonder unders pilled terribly. Sometimes reviews are all over the place.

These were the pants I was looking at. http://shop.lululemon.com/products/clothes-accessories/women-we-made-too-much/Wunder-Under-Pant-HiRise-Full-Luon-MD?cc=20561&skuId=3627362&catId=uswwmtm The reviews were terrible. I wonder if it was the luon fabric.

^^^ Those are adorable!

I have not noticed any issues with pilling. As long as I wash them as instructed - cold water, no softener, no cotton or wool items - they look as good as new even after a year of heavy wear. This is my newest addition (I think MofWC has the pink):

I too recommend going up a size. I buy 6 at Lulu for my size 26-27 jean wearing butt.

I like them as I do not like a great deal of compression in my pants (that sounds very strange) - the wunders fit the bill for me! You’re right, though - I wouldn’t wear them when it’s over 45. When I was shopping last weekend I tried on some the Bean power stretch polartec that I think iDad recommended; they were way too large in the waist and tight in the calves which was disappointing. When I went to Lulu, I think I had arrived at the same time they were having a secret cocktail party for their favorite customers as the only person who spoke to me was the cashier when I walked in! Stock was a mess and no one was interesting in helping me, so I went to Athleta where a very helpful clerk made a big sale. I got several pairs of the Chatarunga tights for Pilates and two pairs of running pants but I can’t recall exactly what they’re called.

Edited to add: Just saw all the posts about the wunder unders! Like Bunsen, I wash mine in cold, no softener, rack to try. Mine are used heavily and have held up really, really well - no pilling. When I fell and needed stitches, I banged my knee up pretty badly, but had one tiny hole in the wunders. I counted them as a casualty that needed to be replaced (ha, ha) but I still wear them. The hole hasn’t expanded and the pants are otherwise great.
