Wishing you all (who celebrate) a happy Christmas!
Two of my three ducks are back in the home nest. The third is trying to get here again today. His flight yesterday was delayed at the origin, thus blowing his connection through Chicago. He decided to stay at his place for an additional night and re-embark today. Keeping fingers crossed!
I planned to run this morning but it was already too warm and humid. I’m wearing a sleeveless cotton dress and sandals for the day. Strange indeed. In my many errands was a pastry pick-up at the small amazing French bakery. But I will walk later on with DH, I will, I will…I’m actually sore in a good way from yesterday’s weight lifting.
I’ve been prepping all day for food for tomorrow to hopefully make tomorrow easier! While I haven’t eaten them, the amount of calories I’ve been around today is staggering!!!
It’s in the 50’s here today and partly cloudy. Again, amazing for Christmas Eve. Just did my dusk run before making shrimp scampi for the family. We will all take a night walk later to look at the lights and watch for Santa.
Have a merry day tomorrow whatever you’re doing. I’m blessed to have and know you all.
Went out of town for a couple days - now playing catch-up with this thread - so much activity!
We spent the last 2 days sitting, chatting with family & overeating. Now I’ve really got to get back on track for the half-marathon on Sunday, or my GI system will not thank me. We had a minor fender-bender during the drive home from LA last night - not much damage, but it really shook me up for the remaining 2 hours of the drive. I was never so glad to get home. Now if my two teenagers EVER get up, we can open some presents!
Merry Christmas, y’all. I, too, am so appreciative of all of you. I also said a prayer last night at church for our dear friend who is no longer with us here iDad.
My cold is not pleasant, and it was pouring rain outside this morning. I went down to the dreadmill to just do a streak mile but eked out 3.1. Not the 5 I had hoped for, but it will do. Today is about family and not about my lack of mileage!
Glad it was only a fender bender, and you’re all okay, Gertrude!
Sending virtual happy holiday hugs to all of you. I’m grateful for this group and its invaluable support through distance and time. Ditto MoWC thoughts on idad.
My DH and I took a long walk this morning before the offspring got up. Now it’s back to my job in the kitchen to prepare the roast beast (rib roast), yorkshire pudding, and assorted traditional foods the young ones look forward to.
@MomofWildChild — what happened to iDad? I must have missed something.
The fast dog and I took DD for a short run this morning before our family breakfast (the slow dog doesn’t run every day, and she stayed home and helped DH make breakfast). DS arrives late this afternoon and we will open presents then. Meanwhile, DH is out for a bike ride (he said something about “riding hard to Boring”–which is a town, not a state of mind–so he’ll be gone a few hours). Later we plan to watch the first Star Wars movie (#4), having seen #7 yesterday.
While running DD and I talked about goals for next year. She wants to get to where she can do a full pullup–as well as “run regularly and stay uninjured” (an excellent goal, IMHO). I’ve decided to spend my ten minutes every day working on learning to sketch with pencils; I’ve also decided “run regularly and stay uninjured” is a good goal for the year too. Contemplating @MomofWildChild 's mile-a-day streak, but I’m not sure I can do both I’ve entered a 10K trail run in March (got a half-price entry for winning my age group at the last trail run put on by the same group (I was the only one in my age group)) and I think I’ll try to do a few more 10Ks and see if I like them when they’re on roads. I know I loved the 10K trail run!
Gertrude- That is scary. I’m glad you are OK! Brands under the tree at our house included Hoka, Athleta, Castelli Cycling, Oiselle, Garmin (my new 235), Kinetic Trainer, Oakley…
MOWC, love those brands under your tree lol! Castelli cycling clothing? Which Kurt Kinetic trainer did your family get?
dmd77, if your daughter would like some ideas on how to progressively train to get that pull up, let me know. Lots of good ways to get there without the need to use elaborate assisted pull up machines (although they are very good too).
@ohiopublic —I have been using the Garmin 225 since September. I recently saw the 325–which is a thinner but not smaller-faced version of the 225–and now lust after it, because it really is thinner, and the thickness of the 225 is substantial. I love having the heart rate function without a band around my chest. Have you seen the DCRainmaker site? His reviews are long and VERY detailed.
The Road Machine is a great indoor trainer. It was my “go to” indoor trainer until I got the Wahoo Kickr. Very realistic road like resistance curve. One thing I would suggest, if your daughter hasn’t already thought of it, is that she get a dedicated indoor trainer tire. Over and above the normal wear considerations of the roller on an expensive road tire, the rubber compound of the indoor trainer tire is better suited to avoiding rear wheel slippage on the roller without cranking it down so tight as to create artificial resistance.
@dmd77, no doubt she will get great training advise at the rock climbing gym. Here are some things she can do in addition to what she foes at the gym:
Slow, controlled “negative” pull ups - use a chair to step up or jump from to a fully contracted pull up and then slowly lower herself over a 3-5 count. The slower she can lower herself, the better. Work up to 3-5 sets of 8-12 reps.
There are also exercise bands called SPRI Superbands that come in various thicknesses (resistance levels) that can be tied to pull up bars and used to support body weight when doing pull ups . Provides an effective assist and as a person gets stronger, lower resistance bands can be used.
She can also do TRX suspension rowing,
She can lower a Smith Machine bar and do rowing from a "table" position so that her body weight is supported by her legs as well as by her I arms during the rowing. As she gets stronger, she can work on straightening her legs out in front of her to increase the resistance.
There’s also a book called " Your Body is Your Barbell" that has lots of good progressions leading up a full pull up.
Good idea, Michael, I’ll suggest it. My son suggested that trainer as the best at that price point without going up to the Wahoo level, which he has and my husband has.
