My H does not have any of the weight loss apps on his phone - and though I’ve mentioned - is not a good user of phone apps. (we finally got him to Instagram at work - he is a park ranger and sees lots of interesting things! - but once he posts a pic, he doesn’t look to see if anyone likes it and doesn’t look at his feed at all!
What DID work for him was writing down everything in a WW journal. He lost 40 pounds, got a great routine going, knew he had to pack his own snacks, knew what he could have/couldn’t have, had the point system down PAT. Tore his meniscus at work and gained much of it back and has not been able to get back to his routine - his choice. He knows what to do, what works, how to do it - all that. He’s choosing to not do it or ignore the process. Isn’t writing down stuff, cause why? - because he would be writing down bad stuff! He is somewhat active at work - tries to patrol walking not just in the patrol car - but it’s not enough to combat the bad eating habits.
We have a “snack bin” at home that he used to stock with Special K bars and some other snacks recommended by WW. I happened to look at that snack bin the other day - it’s filled with convenience store bags of combos, and “fake” trail mix that is more candy than “trail”. Sad face.
Fall Girl - has he ever tried a rowing machine. I know when I had my foot stress fracture that rowing/swimming were the only activities I could do without agravating my foot.
Unfortunately my day job interferes with my training as well. Extremely jealous of PizzaGirl and her daily fitness routine. There is a group of runners that train at 5:30 am that I’d love to commit to. But it would require me to get up at 3:30-4 to eat/stretch/etc and travel the 1/2 hour to their location. I just can’t hop out of bed and run 7 miles.
This is ONLY because I am retiring that I am able to do this and get serious about it. Don’t be impressed by me, be impressed by the MNK’s and MOWC’s of the world
I just walked around work with flyers for my running group which starts a new cycle this Saturday & got two solid recruits and several interested people. Pretty cool! We’ll see who actually shows up to opening day on Saturday, but how fun to have some fellow enthusiasts at work!
Good start to the week. 75 minutes of parallettes, followed by 45 minutes of free weights and suspension/body weight training, then walked 1 1/2 miles to a Pilates studio for an hour of Reformer and some Cadillac suspension work with the same walk back. I love being on vacation :)!
Pizzagirl, it’s the runners on this board that impress me. Mile after mile, in amounts far beyond mere cardio fitness, in the cold, in the wet, day after day with focused dedication. True Road Warriors!
abasket- good Whole30 article. As I knew, the key is food preparation and I’m just not good at that. Plus- I eat lunch out usually at work. There are things I need to do with my eating, but I don’t think I can handle Whole 30. I need to start with eliminating the several Diet Pepsis I have during the week.
This Board is the best. A supportive, sharing community that welcomes all who are interested in getting more fit and healthy regardless of age, weight, shape, abilities and athletic interests. From neophytes to accomplished competitive athletes, we’ve got it all and all are welcome!
I did try Whole30. I had a coworker who made us both lunch It did make me realize that - omg, I am a carb craver. I’m not whole hog on Whole30 (ha ha) but I’m really trying to be mindful of the amount of carbs I eat. Though getting rid of dairy / Greek yogurt was a non-starter for me.
Happy New Year, my fitness friends! Started my new year with a few walks on the beach, which was nice.
Today was my first run of the new year – I went to the health club and used a treadmill because I just couldn’t get psyched about running in the frigid temperatures. 6 miles to start the year.
So, that 2016 run/walk challenge – I may do it too. Just trying to figure out the website and what the benefits are.
Didn’t sign up for a spin class soon enough so I ended up walking today. Wasn’t what I wanted to do because it was in the 20s all day. Ended up doing 3 separate walks. Two walks with the puppy (who will be 6 months next week–what were we thinking when we signed up for a dog!!). First walk was 1.5 miles, second walk was 1.2 miles. I just completed a 3.1 mile walk without the pup. I discovered Map my Walk a few months ago (it’s great) and I love having the exact mileage. Did 10 push-ups (not on my knees) this morning–going to try and do 10 every morning for the month. Way over my step goal today.
Question for Michael: There was a study that I heard about recently that said it was better to move all day long than to just do one workout and sit the rest of the day. Have you seen this? Is that the right interpretation? For me, I think the best way to do it would be to never get a warning on my fitness tracker (I’ve got a Polar Loop activity braclet–the first model). The new bracelets have a warning beep to let you know when to get up–the old one just displays a notification, which is easy to miss. I asked for the new Loop for Christmas but no one got me one. I’m thinking I might get the Fitbit that also has a HRM.
I gave up Greek yogurt last July. I was the only one who ate it and it would always go bad. I thought I’d miss it, but I really don’t. I wish I felt that way about ice cream.
Talk about a love fest! This is a great place, indeed.
Went to a power Pilates mat class today. This is a new class the studio has introduced - solid mat fundamentals, but also “flow” elements and incorporated light hand weights. Really tough but also really fun. I’ve added another goal for 2016 - the rollover. Every time I think I’m improving, there’s another element that just shows me how much I have to learn! Most of these exercises sound/look really easy, but they’re only easy if you’re doing them incorrectly! So much of it is using certain muscles and positioning and that can be a real challenge.
Bunsen, your cabbages sound tasty. I bought tenderloin at Costco and that’s what I cooked tonight. I also made a sauce with mushrooms, shallots, butter and red wine. Steamed broccoli rounded it out. Plenty of leftovers!
This group is just the best! Thanks for the suggestions and reading on the devices. I think I’ll go with the FitBit. Lol about the steps and clapping, MoWC. Point noted.
That was a good blog post, abasket. I too would have trouble giving up yogurt and cheese. I ate a vegetarian diet for years–almost vegan–but in the end, I couldn’t give up cheese.
How’d the Chinese cabbages go over, BB? I made the “mock” fried chicken, aka baked chicken breast that has been dipped in milk and “breaded” with seasoned corn flakes and olive oil. Added oven baked sweet potato wedges and a romaine and avocado salad. S2 used to detest this meal for some unknown reason, but he devoured it all tonight with compliments to the chef. Maybe he was sweet on the cookies I baked him to eliminate some of the Christmas candy from this house.
5.7 miles of walking today. I ended up taking the fit kid to the gym yesterday afternoon to do weights. I’ll do my new year resolution squats in a bit, and call it a day. It is beautiful and cool here today. I’m digging out remnant winter clothing to go to the frigid north.
I meant to weigh in on the Fitbit discussion - was it Deb or Plantmom asking about it???
I got the Charge HR in September. I was at the point of needing a new watch anyway and was already looking at fitness trackers. I’m pretty sold! I enjoy looking at my stats and am really noticing how seasons make a big difference in activity - and why people gain weight often over the colder months! It was nothing for me to get 20+K steps in nicer weather. A day like today when I walked the dog but otherwise moderate movement at work and all? I’ll be at about 13,000 steps. (no run today) The heart rate info has been interesting and educating to me - but I don’t have any other heart rate device. I like that I can add in activity/exercise on the app - so if I did a spin class today which wouldn’t measure steps (but it is exercise), I can add that in to my daily total for calories burned, etc.
For me, it’s been worthwhile. I wish my H would wear one!
