Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

S left today (he was home for a week) - taking all the Christmas cookies, sweets, gift baskets with him!!

Same on that alarm clock. But after the first day, I know the routine will be good. My freshman D is still home for another week - which I am glad! But admittedly, my routine changes with her here and when she does go back, I know my body and belly will benefit from a better routine!!

30 minute cardio core workout and 2 pup walks today.

It was good to have my son home, but I am sort of glad to be back in my normal routine (well, I will be tomorrow). It didn’t help that he was sick and couldn’t do as much of his running/bike training. We were all here just coughing away! He just eats SO MUCH! He did make it back to PA without any tickets or wrecks, though. He ran 15 miles up there this morning and has some sort of extreme mountain bike race next weekend in NJ.

I am not looking forward to tomorrow morning, though. Ugh. I love my job, but not having to get up and get into work has been nice.

Landed!!! Off to Costco to do some (healthy) shopping. Then the vacation begins.

Have fun BunsenBurner! I like your way of starting off the New Year with a vacation!

Every other lady waiting in line for the rental car is wearing Lulu pants.

We are getting freezing rain (literally) on top of 2 inches of snow. I had a horrible drive home from a dog event (but made it without mishap) and am now wondering how on earth I’ll manage to run tomorrow (or even take the dogs for a walk). I may have to break out my eight-year-old pair of Inov-8 hiking boots (which I use only if it snows). Forecast is for thawing overnight, but even a slight shift of temperature could leave us frozen for days.

Mr. Sabaray is going to hate me by the end of the week, but we went to the gym together this morning. He needs help changing his routine to develop new, healthier habits! I need to do more cross training, so this is good for me as well. When we came out of the gym, it was snowing. Hoping we don’t get your freezing rain, dmd.

Cold here, but sunny. Walked the dog outside, but indoor on the treadmill.

sabaray - how do you get your H to go with you? I really need my H to get into some sort of fitness routine.

FallGirl, H hates doing things by himself. He talked all weekend about going to the gym but instead did a lot of work around the house (which I cannot complain about). He doesn’t like to sleep in our bedroom when I meet my running group at 5 (because that means I’m getting up at 4), but last night I said I was going to the gym and he should come too. I was surprised when he agreed. He is extremely overweight and very self-conscious about it. I told him the only way this was going to change was through diet and exercise, and given his schedule he needed to exercise in the am. Hopefully by the end of this week getting up at 5 and heading to the gym will be the start of a new routine for him. We’ve been through this several times before, but he’s now on a statin and meds for hbp - new developments - and one of my favorite lines is “you’re not dying and leaving me alone with this mess!”

I think he realizes I really mean it this time!

I am always in awe of those of you who can get up so early to head out or to the gym! 5am - yikes! (do you go to bed quite early??)

My H falls into the same group as husband’s above. He DOES still go to WWatchers, but is very inconsistent in his eating. He goes to our fitness center but if I’m being honest, the motivating factor for him to go is to check in a certan # of times every 6 months and then his wellness program at work gives him cash back - so, $$ is his motivation! Trouble is, sometimes he literally will go to the fitness center to check in - and will only take a shower while he is there - not exercise. I can’t tell you how angry this makes me - it’s a waste of precious time and so not taking advantage of the resources there!

Yesterday we were talking about some wedding stuff - my son gets married in June. I thought that maybe I could convince him to aim for some weight loss so that he feels more comfortable in whatever suit/tux get-up they decide on. It’s worth a try!!

Back to work - in the 20’s outside - brought some walking shoes and am planning on a mid-morning walk and a mid-afternoon one using the tunnels and buildings around campus. Gotta get those speedy quick steps in!!!

Reformer Pilates done!

Honestly abasket - the hardest part is the getting out of bed!

Agreed. Once I’m up, I love my mornings. I always build in an hour for coffee, breakfast & reading the paper before running or other exercise. I DO go to bed quite early - I’m embarrassed to say just how early!

To each his own, right? Morning is all business for me - get up at 6:30, shower, walk the dog, pack breakfast and lunch and get out the door by 7:20. I don’t turn the tv on, drink nothing but a glass of water and my calcium/VIT D pills - just get ready and go! I tend to head to bed by 10 or 10:30 and read for a bit before snoozing off.

10:20 - time to move away from this desk and take a 10 - 15 walk!

I try to get up to run by 6 (used to be 5:45, but I have just gotten more tired…). It’s hard for me at this time of year when it’s dark and cold. I do pretty well in the warmer months. I could hear the wind outside this morning and I hadn’t slept well, so I only did 2 miles. Will do some more on the dreadmill after work. At least I got out there for some fresh air. It felt colder than 30 degrees due to the wind. I try to be asleep by 10 or 10:30 but it’s basketball season and we have some 8pm games (which I hate).

Sabaray/Fall Girl/Abasket - do any of your H’s have phone apps like MyFitnessPal, MapmyRun, etc.

I found until I had something like MyFitnessPal that I never got serious about the weight. When I started dropping the weight I then got fanatical about the fitness thing. The fitness bands or watches really make a difference and I think males (not to stereotype!) are really more interested in results than the process and I think it helps seeing daily/weekly etc progress on the app/device/phone/computer.

The Garmin 235 is a watch that does it all. Or if GPS isn’t important then maybe an Apple watch? I know some of my male friends don’t like the look of a fitness band.

I just remember Idad used to emphasize the livestrong/MyFitnessPal/WW calorie counters importance in helping him drop the weight and it was critical for me as well.

Very true, ohio - great reminder! I would like him to be more involved in the diet aspect of weight loss - because we all know you can’t outrun a bad diet. He has used the Livestrong app before, but got frustrated with it. I was trying to help him set up his phone with MFP and C25K, but there are so many security features on his phone it was challenging to say the least. I told him to figure out all his passwords for every “gate” and then we’d get some of those on his phone. The Apple watch or 235 is a great idea for him.

H has the Map My Run app, but I just can’t get him to do anything physical. He does have an issue with his foot, but he hasn’t gotten around to going to have it looked at. I can’t seem to motivate him to use the bike in our basement. It’s very frustrating.

While I am still working my “day job”, I find it impossible to work out before work. I end up thinking about my work day and thinks I need to address which interferes with my focus on the workout and my enjoyment of it. So it’s after work for me,but because I’m training clients until 8:30 at night, that means my workouts start at 9:00 with dinner at 10:30 which sucks for all the obvious reasons. Retiring from my “day job” and going full time in the fitness industry can’t happen soon enough. Count down is in progress lol!

I initially used Weight Watchers to knock off 35 lbs and found the point system to very convenient. I quickly found, however, that the points earned from exercising were way off the mark and wildly inaccurate for anyone who does high intensity exercising. It also does not give much detailed tracking for nutritional content. At the end of the day, it was initially effective for me because a tracking system breeds accountability and awareness of what you are sticking in your mouth. I ended up switching to MyFitnessPal which I think is very good. The food database is just about the most extensive around with both generic, brand and store based foods, and the calorie calculator to determine daily allotment is very solid. I’ve compared the calculations to other recognized formulas and to a nutritionist’s recommendation and MyFitnessPal is right on the money. Again, though, you need to be very circumspect with the calorie burn associated with exercise, particularly cardio. I have found the calorie burn given for bike rides I do, even though you enter speed and time, to be wildly inglatedfromwhat I actually burn based either on my Garmin Edge 800 hr rate base calculation or my Powertaphub kilojoules calculations.
