Yay, Plantmom. Join in, Countingdown!
Sorry about the fall, cd. Hope all goes well with your surgery.
Ouch, CD - I hope your surgery goes well. I know you’ll get back on track.
Picked up a copy of Racing Weight at Barnes and Noble yesterday - paging through it looked like it would be helpful to me. I think ohio and Bunsen recommended it. Weight was a struggle in 2015 - either too heavy or quick losses from stress - so while I looked at Whole 30, I didn’t think that I would do it. I’m already adhering to quite a few of their rules and frankly don’t want to add any more rules in. I like principles to guide my eating rather than dos and don’ts!
Good morning all. Heading out on my first real run since the half-marathon. I’m planning on 6 miles, plus another mile or so walk at the end. My squat challenge app already has me up to 75 today. So much fitness - I love it!
Oh nooo, CD! Hope your knee surgery goes well and that the other orthopedic issues resolve.
I worked out yesterday, increasing the running machine to 34 minutes/2.5 miles and then did the bike and some upper body stuff. Took a few days off the careful eating regimen, though, so have to get back on track. Knees hurt today so am taking it easy. Ski trip is 2 weeks away.
And JYM, we want you here and still participating AFTER that ski trip!
CD, omg, that sounds scary and painful! You are so lucky you didn’t get hurt worse!
Really important to hear everyones doings and feedback this time of year - need all the mojo I can get!
CD- I’m so sorry! Good luck with the surgery. We’ll get you through it!
sabaray- My daughter feels that Whole 30 negatively impacts her training. She is really good with nutrition and balancing her lifestyle with healthy habits (she does enjoy good beer and wine and is sort of a foodie). Her husband and his mother are doing Whole 30, which I don’t think will be successful. She is going to cook for him accordingly and eliminate alcohol/sugar, but will keep healthy grains. I give the mother in law about 3 days, if that, of success. She can’t plan and isn’t disciplined.
We’ve had a rough holiday season with having bad colds and all the sweets around, but I kept up the running. At this point I just feel more fatigued than I should, and having it be REALLY dark at 6am isn’t helping. Back to work tomorrow and that will be rough.
I think your D and I eat very similarly, MOWC. I enjoy beer and wine (with meals) but one of my rules is I can only have alcohol on Thursday and Saturday evenings. If I don’t want it then, I don’t have it.
My knees are a little tired today. One of the drawbacks of where I live is hills everywhere. No such thing as a flat run and my knees are feeling it today. Even though it’s a gorgeous day, I’ll be hitting the treadmill later.
sabaray- I think hills can really get to you and too many can lead to injury. A number of us older runners have stopped running at our gorgeous Percy Warner Park very often because it simply beats you up. I’m fortunate that I can at least drive to some flatness. From my house (most of my morning runs) it is hilly but not horrible, steep hills. Still- there are times I just want flat, and the dreadmill is a good option for that. The good thing about hills is that they really get you in shape- as they say, speedwork in disguise!
Why are the laces on my new Altra Olympus shoes so long that they could wrap around my legs three times???
Treadmill this AM and yoga later this afternoon. I have been cooking a few things (quinoa, hard boiled eggs, etc) for this week’s lunches and possibly dinners as it is quarter end at work. The early part of the week will be ok, but by Thurs and Friday we will be putting in long days. It is helpful that I know ahead and can plan to front load the yoga classes. I will have time for treadmill every morning which is good. Will also try to get out and walk during the day.
4 miles- sunny and 42. Tried to keep it pretty easy. Done! Will do some dog walking.
Awesome job, everyone!
CD, good luck with your surgery. Speedy recovery.
This local co is presenting at the CES in Vegas this week. Interesting concept for runners:
Active recovery day today by happenstance, rather than by design, because all the machines at the gym where we are staying were in use when I went to do my planned cardio and we all know how running and I don’t get along anymore :). It was actually fortuitous because after 14 days without a break, I really needed to take a day off. So I did a bunch of stretching this morning, took a 3 mile walk to the end of a state park on the bay/ocean in Key Biscayne and back and did some ab/lower back work. Nothing heavy duty, just relaxing. Tomorrow will be a whole different story :).
That’s interesting BB! Cool idea.
Oh that is just bad luck, CD. Sorry about your fall. I hope you heal quickly and that your knee surgery goes smoothly with a quick and painless recovery.
Hills? What are hills? Lol, A change in altitude of 10 feet is pretty significant here. S1 had to catch an early plane this morning so we were up before the birds. A cool front is pushing through (yay!) and I ran for five miles in the rainy early morning; temps in the 50’s. My husband and I walked another four. On today’s menu for lunch were spicy bean burgers, kale chips, and an orange from the yard. I’m making a chicken soup for dinner. There is a glut of Christmas candy left here. Ugh. It’s so tempting.
I’m considering a Fitbit Charge HR to track steps, heart rate, and distance. Any feedback from current owners of this device?
The Fitbit Charge HR is the band my daughter recommends for her clients. Easy to use, does the job. Bought one for my wife and she likes it. There have been some recent comparison reviews of a bunch of bands that actually compared their accuracy on various metrics using lab equipment which found that no one band was “the best” at measuring strides/distance/calories across all activities and different bands did different tasks better than others dependent on the activity. My recollection is that the Fitbit was generally thought to be the best all around band if not the best at any one particular metric or activity. I see if I can find the review I’m thinking of.
I have the charge without HR. If I didn’t have my Garmin, I would want the HR one. I think it’s a good device, but I don’t think any of them are all that accurate with step count. As we’ve mentioned before, you can get a LOT of steps clapping at a sporting event!
Bunsen- I think Altra is coming out with a shoe similar to those socks that will provide feedback. I’m thinking at this point I’m getting as much feedback as I want!
Plantmom- I hear you on the “hills”. When I lived in Dallas we would have a fit about what I thought at the time were “hills” on some of our courses. Then I moved to middle Tennessee…

Long time no post. I have enjoyed a very long break and haven’t been online much. I have been keeping up with exercise, but eating has been atrocious. Delicious, though. :))
We ran in a 5K race on New Years Day and another one yesterday. The one on the 1st was good, but cold and windy. Yesterday’s was fun - it is a local race and a nice route. I placed first in my age group and H was third in his. Surprising for a small race, they actually had age group awards and I got a really nice clock. H also got a clock, a smaller one but still really nice. I was glad for him - he is faster than I am but the competition is much tougher with the men and he usually places 4th or lower in most races so I was glad he placed yesterday and got an award!
Today was time for a longer run and I did 10 miles. It felt good! My goals for this year for exercise are pretty much to keep doing what I’ve been doing. I do strength training with a trainer twice a week and run 3-4 times a week depending on the weather. Lots of walking every day, I average 15-20K steps per day. The area I really need to improve is with nutrition. I don’t follow through when I try do make big changes, so it will be a matter of making small gradual changes over the course of the year. Mainly I need more veggies and less sugar. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
CD-so sorry to hear about the fall. I sure hope you’re healing OK and that your surgery this week goes well.
Gertrude-a belated congratulations on the half marathon! Glad to see that you are hooked on running!
Back to work tomorrow. Oh how I am dreading that alarm at 5:15am. I am so not a morning person!
I have the Fitbit Charge and I really like it, fwiw. I used to have the Zip and I was concerned that I’d notice a band on my wrist, but I really don’t.
