Interesting how heat impacts heart rate. It was around 57 before I stepped into the sauna. After 10 minutes it was 140.
Good article. Thanks!
Mr. B really appreciated the article!
17,000 steps for us today according to the Firbit Mr. borrowed from kiddo. Now Mr. really wants his own!
Kiddo scored a free private surfing lesson and was too wiped out (pun intended) to walk to the 'Ville with us. We saw a cat, a mouse, a large snail, a disgusting centipede, and a large toad - the entire food chain, lol.
^^Sounds like a great day! - the surfing lesson that is - the food chain - not so much!
It’s an awful weather day - rain, wind and snow yet to come. And we have to drive D2 back to school a normal 2.5 hour away - today will be lots of sitting in the car, some stair climbing her stuff back to her room and if we get back not too frazzled, an exercise video tonight. That’s the best I’ve got on this day!
Safe travels, abasket. I have to say I don’t miss those return to school days! That’s a functional workout for you!
I track everything, food, exercise, HR, etc. it’s allowed me to understand much better how my body reacts to specific foods and exercise. Refined sugars and flours really bumps my weight for a few days; apples don’t, even if I eat the same number of calories. That’s worth knowing. Soups, even with lots of salt, are not a problem. A hard five k race puts my weight up two pounds the next day; a hard five k plus a half hour slow swim that afternoon does not. A long run (which for me is 6 or 7 miles) also bumps my weight up for a few days.
Interesting, dmd. I would love to know what is going on physiologically with all those changes.
Other than a 3-mile walk yesterday, my weekend exercise has consisted of closing up our vacation place. Lots of moving around–I did meet my step goal on Friday without extra walking. I have also been doing my 10 pushups daily since 1/1/16!
Interesting about heat increasing heart rate. I notice it in yoga–my studio is usually 85-90 degrees.
Heat and dehydration will definitely raise your heart rate!
Bunsen- sounds like a great trip so far. You should get your H a FitBit! They are really pretty fun and I really think mine helps me get myself out of my office and circulating around the office more.
There is just the slightest dusting of snow here, and people are freaking out. It is a little bit slippery, so I’m going to be careful out there once I finally pry myself out the door for 4 miles. It’s really cold, so I’ll break out the neck gaitor.
dmd- interesting observations from your tracking. I think it’s fun to see the variances and try to figure them out.
dmd, great onservations! Here is a good explanation why sugar in fruit is different from the same sugar in sodas and cookies:

4 miles for a 36 mile week of running (plus the walking for the 2016 goal). It was 29 degrees. I wore the new green Lulu puff and loved it. I was just fine until I turned back into the west wind. Whoa! I was only in it for a half mile or so, though. I started out with my husband, but he was only going 3.5 so at 1.2 he split off on a different part of the trail. Done!
I’ve run 46 days in a row, at least one mile every day. I’m starting a new training plan with an online coach. Now I just need to lose some weight! I have to quit eating so much.
Thanks, all! The trip so far has been the most enjoyable ever!
Did not do much except the walking and my 20/20 pushups though… I am somewhat sad that I missed out on a 5k that happened nearby on Saturday. Heading home soon.
Interesting comments about fruit BB. To follow up a little further, there’s now also some literature suggesting that those juice extraction blenders are perhaps not so great because the machines destroy the cell walls of the fruit so that you end up with basically a high fructose drink without any of the benefits derived from eating whole fruit.
Mainelonghorn- Congrats on the streak! Your coach is more than an online coach, though! She is our great friend and running guru! I would highly recommend her coaching to anyone of ANY level looking for some structure and sensible improvement. My daughter works with her, too.
3 miles yesterday, 8 miles today. I don’t usually run 2 days in a row, but yesterday was opening day for the running group & they were only going 3 miles, while I’ve got 8 on my personal schedule. A couple of work friends joined up as well - should be fun! I have signed up for the San Diego HM on March 13 for which my running group is the official pace group, so there will be a huge presence there. I’m hanging in there on the 2016 challenge, but I can see I have my work cut out for me there!
Question for those who go to exercise classes like I do. What do you wear ( if anything) over your workout clothes when you are out and about either before or after? Or do you just change there? To be honest, it’s not like I’m sweating so profusely in yoga, Pilates or barre that I couldn’t run errands afterwards. I’m realizing that even my casual work wardrobe of jeans and sweaters is still “dressier” than this new lifestyle.
I am casual, so I would wear a hoodie or Lulu long sleeved top and some track pants or warmer, loose leggings are hat pull on over my shorts. Athleta has some casual dresses for hat are great to pull on over workout clothes.
I agree that the Athleta dresses would be adorable over workout wear! Except I wear mine to work too! Haha!
When I work out at the gym (which is at my work) but am heading home afterwards, if it’s cold I just throw on some heavier leggings and a fleece 1/4 zip or a hoodie. I will stop at the grocery store in something like that! If it’s warmer, I often then I’m probably wearing shorts to work out in - at that point I usually just bring an extra bra/shirt to change out and maybe a long sleeve tech shirt to put over the shorts. But I am REALLY casual and will also run to the store in my shorts (note: I don’t wear shorty shorts!!)
Basically, when I pack for the gym or a gym class I throw some extra stuff in the bag - and always have a couple quick toiletries to fresh up including a bottle of scented spritz to disguise any “worked out!” smell!!
Pizzagirl, if you are concerned about sweat and smells, LuLu’s Silverescent fabric is a godsent. Mr B has been caught wearing the same T-shirt for 5 days in a row without washing, and the dang thing does not smell at all!
When I go for a run on the trail, I change out of my shorts into lulu pants in the car (the parking lot is pretty deserted) and put a long sleeve top over my bra/tank. Then I go grocery shopping or to super casual lunch at the brewery, but if I have more errands to run, I usually change at home into jeans/sweater kind of attire.
