OMG, Nrdsb4 that’s AWFUL! Are you ok? What the heck that that crowd did not even stop - surely they must have heard/seen something behind them! Yes, you may be sore - thank goodness nothing is broken. Geez!
I think I’m okay, @abasket. I see typos in my post. It was two married couples, an extra woman, and a dog, all taking up both lanes of the trail. When you call out “On your left” from behind, they are supposed to move to the right so that you can pass them on the left. They may have started to do that, but they didn’t have a good hold on the leash, because the dog moved to the left instead of to the right with them.
They all did turn to look at me. It was such a hard fall, there’s no way they wouldn’t have heard me. But they didn’t stop or anything, or seem particularly concerned at all. Maybe they didn’t realize that their dog was what caused me to fall.
Whining here, but this class thing is so upsetting - and I know a few others “like me” are upset too. This is the case of the ugly stepchild. I work for a university on the health care campus away from main campus. We were “adopted” several years ago - but you know, we’re stepchildren! The fitness center was run by the local Y system until late last spring - the Y at least knows how to run recreation and that classes need to be varied and plentiful. The uni kicked out the Y and now is running both the main campus rec center and our gym. Many of the classes are now being taught by coeds from campus - not my “CC” cup of tea necessarily! Thus, I’m guessing, the Shawn T mentality. Our campus boosts some students - but they are mostly medical students/residents/pharm/nursing - otherwise, lots and lots of employees! Who are not 21!!!
I’ll survive of course and I hope to make the one spin class a week there is as much as possible. The exercise equipment is actually really good, really plentiful, there is an inside track and everything is very spacious - all pluses. It’s just that this is the time of year I have to rely on this center - and I don’t want to waste my time!!!
(rant over)
I am so sorry. That is my worst fear with multi-use paths. I’m glad you aren’t hurt worse, but I bet you will be really sore. How scary- and what jerks to not stop and help you! I’m glad you were near your car at least.
^^^^Sending healing thoughts, Nrdsb4. Can’t believe the people didn’t check to see if you needed help, even if they didn’t think their day was the cause of your tumble.
What is wrong with people! I don’t understand how you can just turn your back on an injured person. I truly hope you’re okay, Nrdsb4.
Our smaller Lab is very uncertain about bicycles, so I am super vigilant with her - keeping her on a very short leash when we’re walking so there’s no chance of jumping into anyone’s path. I hate that you were hurt that way.
Indeed, what is wrong with people! I would have ran like crazy to the fallen cyclist to see if any help was needed. Were they afraid that you might demand something from them because they realized their dog jumped in your path?
(Happened to me on a XC ski run; as I was headed downhill, a tiny toddler kid stepped right onto the tracks, and I had no other choice but to fall to avoid hitting him. Broke my tailbone because I fell quite badly, and the slope was icy! The parents who were supposed to watch the kid grabbed him and disappeared quickly. Can’t use bike seats ever since that fall).
Hope your soreness will go away quickly. Healing thoughts!
Thanks, everyone. On a good note, maybe this is evidence that my post menopausal bones are in fairly good shape, lol. It was a really hard fall, and in the last 18 months I haven’t even come close to anything like this before.
That fall sounds horrible, Nrdsb4 – hope you’re OK. You might be really sore tomorrow. I always am hypervigilant on bike paths when I see groups of people, especially kids on bikes who tend to wander all over the place. And people who decide to stop on the path and don’t pull all the way over. One of my worst bike falls involved a dog – twisted my ankle badly. Same day that a dog bit me, so I had to get a rabies shot, too. That was a strange day.
The one benefit to using my university fitness center – it’s not crazy in January with all the New Year’s resolution people. The students are still on break, so the place is wonderfully empty. That’ll change soon, but I’m enjoying it now. The treadmills were just upgraded to include “courses” on the video screens, so I can pretend I’m running in Germany or Utah or New Zealand. Although the videos are really odd – instead of staying on the same trail they keep jumping around.
My worst nightmare nrdsb4, so glad you are alright. I am very nervous around dogs on the paths. So unpredictable.
Bummer about the classes Abasket. That was some of my problems I had with classes. You find something and a time that works and then it changes.
More XC skiing. Not as fun as yesterday. The path wasn’t groomed (different path than yesterday) and it was hard, I fell a couple of times. Not hard and the only thing bruised was my ego.
I’ve found a new good habit (well, I’ve done it twice now…). I walk over to our other (connected) building to our fitness center and do some weights. I don’t change clothes and no one is in there if I go mid-afternoon. I can do a few upper body things with dumbbells without getting sweaty. I get in steps going to and from and get in some extra upper body stuff besides what I do at home on the Val Slides and jungle gym. Yay, me!
Oh no - you’re going to be sore, Nrdsb. Take care!
How ridiculous to observe a biker who has just crashed and move on without helping her/him. Oh my gosh, what is wrong with someone like that??? I don’t care if it was their dog or not who caused it.
Very creative MOWC. And bonus, more steps - that if you take them at a quick clip, are legit! I could do that - hmmm…thanks for the idea!
Wow, that’s awful Nrdsb4. So glad you weren’t more seriously injured. What a bunch of jerks. I hope you mend quickly!
That’s bad luck with the gym classes. It sounds like something wasn’t right, if a dance routine couldn’t get your heart rate up too. Hopefully the facility is open to suggestions and change.
Went to the gym early this morning and ran 5K. At least I think it was about that–my mileage tally failed and I wasn’t counting laps. I also did the resolution planks, push-ups, and squats. We took a hike through the woods this afternoon for six rugged miles on fresh powder snow. Even though I was bundled up in layers, I was chilled to the bone for hours afterwards. I give all of you–probably most of you–who tough out winter day after day so much credit!
Nrdsb4 - so sorry about your fall & the unconcerned bystanders. I can’t even imagine not helping someone who’s taken a fall.
Heading over to hit the treadmill at work again today. The weather is fine, but this time I want to experiment with some speed intervals. 3-4 miles planned. I’m on Day 12 of my 30-day Squat Challenge & it has me doing 120 squats today - yikes!
Nrdsb4, so sorry to hear about your crash. People on multi user paths are so frequently oblivious to other users. From the way you described the crash, you are so lucky you didn’t end up with a separated shoulder or broken collarbone! You will be sore as hell tomorrow, that’s for sure, but it could have been a lot worse!
Glad you are ok, Nrdsb4. I’m am not a cyclist , but can’t imagine just ignoring anyone who has fallen and might be injured.
I like your idea, MOWC. My office is moving next month (same distance from home but maybe a longer commute time), so I may have to adjust my routine. I know there is a fitness center in the building, so that could work for me.
I have been sick since Sunday, but working (Quarter end, my boss is sick, too). Feeling a lot better today, so tomorrow it’s back on the treadmill and back to yoga.
Yes, it could have. I remember when I got my bike, they told me not to hit one of the brakes too hard or you could be thrown over the handle bars and seriously injured. That’s exactly what I did today. I went over the top of the bike and hit the concrete hard. I am very glad to not be hurt worse. I remember thinking “OH MY GOD THAT HURT.” I’ve got lots of lumps and bruises and cuts but I’m fine, just fine. And very happy it wasn’t worse. Everything else is small stuff.
The funny thing is, the dog that turned into my path was a dead ringer for that lovely lady in my avatar. Whom I loved so dearly and miss so much.
<3 Adorable pup!!!
