Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

ohio- I think I’ve shared the story of one of my (fairly successful) stints of low HR training. I was walking up a hill near my house because I couldn’t keep my HR down running up it and 2 cars stopped to ask me if I needed a ride. I felt like I needed to wear a sign saying “LOW HEART RATE TRAINING”.

Today was to be a non-sweat inducing exercise day. And it was. But when I got home from work I just needed to get outside. It was like 25 degrees and can’t run outside near home due to snow/ice but I put on my Teva boots and headed out for a good walk. Ending the day with about 7 miles worth of steps with about 1/2 of them at a decent clip (for walking on snow!) .

I’ve never had King cake!

I also largely exercise to eat - not only, but largely! An old roommate of mine is married to someone semi-famous. Her 57 year old bday was this week and they are celebrating with a trip today to Hawaii. She had an eating disorder in college and clearly decades later, she is still stick thin. She posted a pic of herself poolside in her bikini this afternoon - she looks AMAZING in the photo - but I KNOW that women does not eat and hasn’t for years! That’s not living. Not in my life!

Eating is life. Good eating is good life. Looking good in a bikini is nice, but it is secondary.

Saw Vivofit 2 at Nordstrom Rack today - with a nice metal band, rubber band included. Hmmm… Maybe that’s what Mr. needs instead of his crummy watch he adores!

Are y’all talking about 1% online on the treadmill while running or walking? I do 4% while walking on it and I can’t really tell the difference except I get a better calorie burn (such as that is) and it kicks up my heart rate a bit.

Got my meniscus surgery stitches out yesterday and got the report from my doc. The pre-op CT scan didn’t show much arthritis at all. Surgery showed the opposite – lots of it and he says I’ll need a knee replacement in a few years. He is an amazing surgeon and came highly recommended, but after my mom’s disaster with her knee replacement and subsequent femur fracture, I.AM.NOT.GOING.THERE. Gotta say it gives me motivation to get really back on track with the weight loss.

Told DH I may need to see a personal trainer to figure out how to build quads, glutes and core given all my ortho and cardiac issues, and he didn’t bat an eye (amazing!). In fact, he mentioned that one of his colleagues has a D with special needs and her DH just started working as a personal trainer so he can be more available for the D. He sees clients while she’s at school. I still have a few weeks of PT remaining, so the PT and I are also working towards this.

Would be nice to get out of a chair without using my arms and shoulders, and to be able to go up the stairs facing forward and without holding the rail. I’ve been sidestepping the stairs for over a year.

You can do it! You’ve accomplished so much! I’m talking about incline while running. It feels very hard to me.

A change in incline while running is clearly noticeable to me! Anything above 2%, and I can really feel it kicking my butt. On city streets - not so much.

You go CD! Maybe your hubby will join you?

I run, therefore I eat.

(Not the other way around)

I like to eat though I try to eat moderately and healthy, there are certain treats I won’t give up. I try to keep balanced.

I run/walk on the treadmill with a 3% incline. It’s hilly where I live so I figure when the weather is nicer and the days are longer I’ll be more prepared to run outside.

We are in the middle of a big snow/ice storm and no one is advised to go anywhere. My employer told everyone they should probably stay home (and we are a 4 wheel drive culture). Our ice pellets are just now changing to snow. This is a big deal in the south- glaze ice on the roads and impossible to walk or drive. So- will work from home and do the treadmill a little later. Even the dog beat it back inside as soon as he peed.

How much do you expect to get MOWC?

For once, we’ll be missing snow - YEAH!

Be safe all you snowbirds!!

It’s headed our way - nothing yet, but I am at home where my boss told me to stay.

CD, you are doing terrific! Working with a trainer once a week has really made a difference for me so I’m glad your hubby is on board with the idea.

Went to circuit class this morning which was tons of fun - nice warmup with squats, light handweights, some balance challenges - then we went into circuits rotating through TRX, Bosu and mat with weights. Really challenging. We did iDad’s favorite Burpees - that was tough physically and mentally, thinking of him the whole time. Good workout. Came home, walked the pups, no snow, so headed out for 3.5 miles which was at a nice, relaxed pace.

Bring on the snow!

Sound like you’re all set - exercised and all! Say goodbye to the grass for awhile!

Maybe 3-5 inches. It really varies around here depending on what side of town you are on. We are south, so it started later. The problem is the layer of ice under the snow. We also don’t have much infrastructure as far as plowing and salting. They get the main roads, but side streets stay really iced over.

Good job, sabaray. I love to run in the snow, but I don’t trust the footing today and there is a nasty strong wind.

A good fast 4.3 mile run early this morning. It feels great to start the day with a run outside in the cold - by the time I get to work, I’m in such a great mood.

Stay warm and safe all of you in the storm’s way. It sure sounds as if the DC area is going to get clobbered.

CountingDown-glad you got your stitches out OK. Good luck avoiding the knee replacement. I don’t think your mom’s experience is typical but I can certainly understand trying to avoid it if at all possible. I’m glad your husband is on board with the trainer idea, I think you’ll get a lot out of the one on one training.

Sabaray-your class this morning sounds terrific - I really like doing circuits. I love that you go out to exercise class, but then stay home from work because of the forecast. Smart idea, with what they say is coming it is definitely best to be holed up at home and not trying to fight the crazies on the roads.

MOWC-be careful, I hope you’re able to just stay home and inside until all of this passes. Nothing is worse than ice, unless possibly ice with a layer of snow on top. How is your son doing?

I really like your quote about running and eating, BB.

I ran 4.2 on the treadmill while I watched the weather reports, which is all that is on our stations right now! They are predicting 8 inches officially, which is the most in one snow since 2003. Yes, I am staying home. I will probably walk the dog a little bit, though.

My son is facing some expensive dental work and has an appointment with the hand specialist on Tuesday. This is all a nightmare. I wish I could post the picture of his face. It’s pretty bad. He’s disappointed that he will miss his fat tire race series that he had scheduled, too.

It’s flurrying here!!!

Lunchtime spin class - this new instructor does more with “climbing the hill” - I know it’s good for me. Ran around the track a little before class to get my heart rate up a bit!

MOWC-Oh wow, expensive dental work also sounds like painful dental work. I am so sorry for him, this all sounds just awful.

abasket-great job with your lunchtime spin class! I walk everyday at lunch, but that’s as energetic as I ever get during the workday. I really admire everything you do at your workplace.

Am I the only one with at least one of these bad running habits?

http://www.active.com/running/articles/5-bad-running-habits-and-how-to-break-them?cmp=17N-PB2-S31-T6-D4-01212016-1127

I notice that I squeeze my fists when I run - at least the one not holding my phone/headphones - which is why I LIKE to hold my phone - feels awkward without it!

I used to wonder if I should have more of that running “bounce” I see other people have. I decided that that just used more energy - and I need all I can get!

“I notice that I squeeze my fists when I run - at least the one not holding my phone/headphones - which is why I LIKE to hold my phone - feels awkward without it!”

Me too! I need something in my hands when I run. I know, stupid habits do not die quickly.

Great article, and lots of interesting links. Thanks for posting!

I have a very low foot pick up (which is why I trip). I have cured myself of the fist thing by touching my fingers to my thumb while I run to make sure I’m not clenching my fists. I’ve had runner friends who swing their arms completely across their bodies. You can identify them from quite a distance!

Walked the doggie in the snow. It was fun (a novelty for us) except for the wind. I had a buff, hat, hood, etc, but the wind was still cold. Doggie loved it.
