That’s just awful, MoWC! Wishing your son a very speedy and complete recovery from the accident.
I got home after a few weeks in the upper midwest. Very happy to see green again. On the journey home, I did my laps all over the United concourses lugging my bags. Weights and distance complete with people watching all built into one workout at O’hare, lol . I created the reward with a breadless torta at Rick Bayliss’s restaurant. I ran this morning for four miles and walked two more tonight but my legs have felt stiff and heavy. Ugh, the scale also read heavy. Too much eating on my trip. This always happens when I stray too far into the red meat and dessert menus. My husband returns tonight from China. Time to get back into our normal routines.
Good luck with the snow, sabaray. That’s a crazy amount to get all at once. I see a lot of shoveling in your immediate future!
Thanks everyone. I’m going to wait until he sees the hand specialist to book my husband’s flight to Puerto Rico to go with my son for the race. We’ll see. I think his teeth will be OK. He honestly though he had lost them all at first. He was truly in shock- the medical kind.
I’m not so OK. I have been through hell in the last 15 months with things with this kid, and it’s just about to do me in. This is about mid-level emotional trauma for me if you rank the last 15 months. I appreciate everyone’s good thoughts.
I did get outside for 3 miles before it got dark and it felt great to be on the pavement in the fresh air. We all left work early because we are afraid of weather. Only 30% of us showed up at all. Such is life in the south in the winter!
@MomofWildChild, I just saw your post about your son’s mtn bike accident. If there’s anything I can do to help, please do not hesitate to let me know. In this regard, I have a number of close contacts deep within the medical community at all the top tier hospitals in Philly as well as within the dental specialists community. If you and he think there is a product liability issue that needs to be investigated, I also have several close contacts among top shelf firms that handle cases of that type. Anything that you need, just let me know. My thoughts are with your family and your son.
The agony of being a parent, right? Joys, yes. Agony - at times. Hoping for better, safer times for you and your family MOWC. That emotional stuff can wear you to the bone.
I will say thank goodness for cell phones and that he was able to reach out to you (and others?) So frightening to think “what could have been” in a remote area like the woods.
As I’m sure you do, remember to count the blessings too.
We had just the smallest amount of snow yesterday - but it was slick, so I didn’t get a run in last night or this morning. My running group is going tomorrow, but I decided to stick with my circuit class. I might run tonight or after class tomorrow. We headed to the grocery last night (I was almost out of honey!) and there was literally nothing to buy. It was a wasteland. Here’s hoping our power stays on.
PlantMom, I think you timed your travel right! MOWC, I hope you got some rest. That emotional stuff really does take a toll.
Thanks. I really think I run for my sanity as much as anything.
I got outside this morning in a forecast of “freezing fog.” Lovely. It was fine and it felt good to be outside. We are getting cold rain later today turning to snow, so I wanted to get outside while I could. It’s just hard to get out of bed.
Be safe- those of you about to get slammed by the storm.
Nasty, nasty, nasty weather today in my neck of the woods! My bus is taking twice as long as usual to get downtown. I do not expect it to get better on the way back… So my running plans might be doomed. Glad I am not the one driving!
Great workout with my trainer–lots of balance exercises. Seems like my bad ankle was really turned out today. Also, moved up to 70 pounds for bench press. Did my push-ups during the training session–ending up doing 3 sets of 12–so more than my goal of 20. Afterwards, my trainer suggested I do 45 minutes on the tread mill increasing the incline by .5 every 5 minutes. Wow–what a difference. So much harder.
Haven’t been to the grocery store yet–I’m north and west of Boston. Forecasters are predicting that we won’t get a huge amount of snow. Looks like we might get a break up. Hope everyone in the path of the storm stays safe and warm.
Great job, Bromfield! Incline on the treadmill is SO hard. I think my Landice is even harder than others I have used. Even 1% just seems to kill me- and I’m used to hills outside!
The first King’s Cake has arrived at the office. I LOVE them and don’t even try to resist.
King’s Cake! Resistance is futile. That’s why we run.
Bromfield, that 45 min run exercise is very challenging! You end up at 4% incline at the end… I need to try that. Were you told to maintain constant pace throughout the entire run?
My treadmill does not do negative incline, but if I crank it up to 5% or above for 30-60 seconds, the following minute feels like I am cruising downhill!
Saw this and decided to share. There is nothing earth shattering here, but the tips could be useful to someone trying to streamline their morning smoothie routine:
There is a good WSJ article today about a new app Mio is developing and how it is better to raise your HR than to count steps. This has been my claim all along, although I do my steps to keep me off of my butt! It’s on the first page of the Personal Journal section. I agree with it to a large extent, although it is more complicated than just the step trackers and there won’t be as much buy-in as a result.
Oh I completely agree that HR intervals are important, but so is getting off one’s butt! I guess my short bursts of frantic bus chasing could count as short periods of HR elevation. (Off to track down the article).
