Romani I wonder if the AlterG might be something you might want to ask your PT about. It is a treadmill that reduces your weight. You can dial it down to 40% of weight. Really reduces impact.
Great mileage, MOWC!
Bunsen, did you get a FitBit too or only Mr. B? Mine told me I had 7 sleep disruptions last night, which, big surprise, I already knew about.
Rest day for me, so I took the pups on a big walk, which they were thrilled about. Then I took Mr. Sabaray on a big walk, which he did express enthusiasm for! I wanted to scope out part of my usual running route - the melting and refreezing is just leaving ice everywhere. Not risking it - more treadmill for the foreseeable future.
Sabaray, only Mr. got one for now - we are going to use him as a guinea pig to test it. The reviews on Costco site were less than happy.
Good morning all. Did 6.5 miles with the run group yesterday - really enjoying being a member! There’s so much positive energy. Today will be a lazy day - we have rain all day so I did all my chores/errands yesterday & am planning on a big pot of bean & barley soup & some Netflix.
After skiing yesterday, our neighbors called and wanted to snowshoe. So 3 miles snowshoeing.
A relatively warm day here, I went outside to try and run but it was black ice so no go. Went inside and did the treadmill. 20 minutes on that felt longer than all the exercise I got yesterday.
Yippee. Fitbit says Mr. walked 0.05 miles while eating his breakfast of omelet and cottage cheese with blueberries. All without getting his butt out of the chair!
It’s the hand to mouth movement! The first day was wonky for me, but it seemed to resolve. I had zero steps during spin class, but it showed a period of high intensity exercise. Mileage seems accurate based on what it measured covering a route I have a Garmin measured distance on. In even better news, Mr. Sabaray used a gift card he got through work to order a new one. There is hope!
@michaelnkat thank you for the links and advice, I’ll definitely look into it!
@Ohiopublic I don’t start PT for quite a while but I’ve made a note to ask the PT about that, thanks!
You can put the FItbit on your non- dominate wrist to help with some of that. But again, you’re going to eat each day. And probably about the same number of times. So at long as each day you have 3 or 4 meals of movement, then it’s still an “average” of sorts to use as a guide each day. The device is made to detect movement - and it’s on your wrist - what are we expecting it to do? - how is it to know a true step versus a waving good bye to someone?!
If you’re doing an activity that is NOT walking movement and you’re going to be doing it repeatedly, move the Fitbit! I’ve been painting the last two weekends . As I mentioned, I took it off my wrist (dominant that I would paint with ) and attached it to my bra - still getting credit for steps, climbs on the ladder, etc. but not for a paint stroke!
The Fitbit is a tool, not a solution. It can be a motivator and be motivating but it’s not going to run like clockwork.
I wear mine on my non-dominant wrist but run with it on my dominant wrist since the Garmin is on the left arm. At least I don’t have the Mio anymore. My daughter thought I looked ridiculous with Garmin, RoadID, Mio and FitBit. Running is a simple sport, right?
Anyway, it probably records some extra steps while it’s on the dominant wrist since I have it set up for non-dominant.
Got to use TRX straps the other day at PT to start doing squats. I really liked it. Makes me think I should get this, but am not sure if I have a stable enough place to install it. There is no way I can do a lot of the exercises mentioned, but I think I can work up to enough that it would be worth the expense. Just being able to squat and lunge (at all!) would be an immense improvement for me.
Countingdown- I have the jungle Gym version (TRX clone) in my basement and I love having the setup. I do push-ups and pull-ups (on an incline). We did have good supports for mounting. Michael can give you some advice on mounting. IDad was a big help back when I got mine. The directions that came with the straps- not so much.
Thanks, abasket and MOfWC. Of course it registers pretty much any hand motion, and as such it was not designed to be super accurate but rather to provide a general guidance about activity. I recommended moving it to the left hand, but no - the ugly watch needs to be there. So for now Mr. decided that he will attribute 2000 “steps” to eating his daily meals. Fitbit did count the nuber of flights of stairs accurately. One thing for sure - the heart rate function on the Fitbit keeps Mr. amused! How high can I get it doing XYZ? Like chasing after the cat around the kitchen. Hilarious!
@countingdown, the TRX can even be mounted slung over a door. I’ve done that frequently in hotel rooms. There is a mount specifically for that which comes with the TRX. When door mounting slung over the door, you want to mount the TRX and workout on the side of the door that closes in i.e. you want the door being pulled closed as you work out. If that is not possible and you need to mount the TRX on the side that opens outward, you can still mount the TRX on the door; instead of just slinging the mount over the top, slide the mount down the hinge edge of the door. That way, the hinge screwed into the door and door frame is securing the mount. It works either way.
Of course the ideal mount is using the ceiling mount screwed into a ceiling joist. If you are going for a wall mount screwed into wall studs, make sure the studding itself is securely screwed into ceiling joists or a secure header and into floor footers so that the studding can’t pull away from the wall.
Is the weekend done already??! Drats.
Got my painting done, which while I didn’t realize it, must have exercised some new muscles because when I got back to it this morning, I found my legs to be pretty achy getting up and down from the floor! It was 55 degrees today. I finished the painting, took pup for 2 long walks and one short one and squeezed in a 40 minute power walk for myself.
Got in 5,000 steps today and a few flights of stairs by doing stuff around the house.
I know it’s close to nothing but I’ve been averaging less than 1,000 steps per day that I’m home because I’ve just been so danged sore. I also played fetch with the pup for a good 40 minutes. She’s happy but my shoulder is a bit sore.
Baby steps (literally!).
Note: I have a fitbit because I bought one for my sister for Christmas and it turns out her boss had already given her one. I figured it was the universe’s way of telling me to get off my butt (especially since it was in the middle of the worst of my illness).
Thus far though, it’s mostly been a sleep monitor
You know, I was going to ask about a Fitbit or something similar Romani - and my point was going to be to find your s
daily “steps” by just doing what you normally do (as of late) and then make a goal from there. So, going from 1000 to 5000 is amazing! No need to measure yourself against anyway - it’s your fitness game to play, no one elses! 5000 steps a day even 5 days a week would be 25,000 - compared to 1000 steps a day for 5 days? 5000. You can see the gains over time pretty easily!
I added the note about the fitbit because my goal is to eventually get back to where I was pre-Thanksgiving (when my illness hit me like a ton of bricks). But since I’ve only had it for a little over a month, I don’t know where that line is.
I’ve set a goal to be able to walk my dog for a mile by spring break (late February/early March sometime). I am presenting at a national conference in late March/early April and I’d like to be able to walk around as much as possible by then. The conference is in DC and I’ve never been there so I’m going to try to build up my stamina so I can sightsee
Romani, I am positive that with your attitude and determination, you will be able to get some awesome sightseeing done in DC!
Mr. is now researching why his Fitbit failed to register his HR rate above 140 when he rode his stationary bike. Other than that, the HR monitor on the bike and Fitbit correlated perfectly. I ran my 3.5 miles on the treadmill and had to tune out the Iowa Caucuses crap that was the crap du jour on TV. Ugh.
I now want my own Fitbit!!!
