BunsenBurner-get your own Fitbit! I’m glad Mr. B is enjoying his so much. I am a huge fan of Fitbit. I think you’ll also really enjoy it.
H has the new Fitbit Blaze pre-ordered, I think I’ll probably last about a week once his arrives before ordering one of my own. I love my Surge but it is so darned ugly!
I got a 13.6 mile run in Saturday morning. It wasn’t too bad. Then the rest of the weekend was pretty much sitting on my butt - we drove to H’s family 3 hours away and spent time visiting with his dad and everyone. They are all slugs. We got back yesterday with enough light left to squeeze in a 5.2 mile run, thank goodness.
Romani-it sounds as if you have gotten a lot of good suggestions for exercise options. I think that if you post on here regularly that it will also help you a lot. You’ll get plenty of good ideas and feedback, but there’s also good accountability that is helpful in forcing you to follow through on exercise plans.
I think the Blaze is in my future, too. Sabaray- add me on your Fitbit friends!
I ran 40 miles and was pretty active this past week in Florida. I’m home now. Ate dessert every day and had alcohol every day. Lots of food. 3 pounds up from last Monday. I think some is “fake”, but it’s a good example of eating v exercise.
MOWC, I’ll add you as soon as I can find you! For some reason you’re not showing up for me.
5.3 on the treadmill this morning - Mr. Sabaray is nervous about me falling again so I agreed to hold off on outdoor running for a few more days. It wasn’t too terrible. Pilates class scheduled for this afternoon, and then planning on spin class tomorrow morning.
I am feeling frustrated with weight right now. Part of me is saying “Sabaray, you are in excellent shape! Don’t worry about a number!” But then the other part of me is saying “Lose some damn weight!” Food is fuel, food is fuel.
Sabaray, what is your rationale for wanting to lose weight? To be lighter on your feet? Vanity? The pleasure of seeing a lower number on the scale as your motivation?
I’m just curious. As I have mentioned, I rarely weigh myself.
Are you feeling good, healthy and fit in other ways? Are there other ways you are “lacking” those things - feeling good, healthy, fit?? You’ve been taking a lot of strength/core classes - do you feel/see more muscle?
Abasket, I am sure sabaray has her own reasons, but for me, racing weight matters a lot: an extra pound carried over 26 miles is like having extra 26 pounds on while running a mile!
Rule of thumb on weight loss is that for every pound you lose, you gain an extra 2 seconds per mile pace. So if time is important to you when you are racing, then you have to factor in weight.
Unfortunately, I think I might’ve overdone it. I didn’t sleep well last night (in fact, I didn’t sleep much at all) and I think it might be because I simply couldn’t get comfortable with my sore joints.
On a more lighthearted note, because I study medical history, I tend to be in classes with profs who are practicing physicians and students who are obviously interested in medicine (from a variety of different lenses). Two of the 6 of us in my medical anthropology class are in the process of being diagnosed with autoimmune disorders (and one of the two professors is a practicing physician) so we often use our on-going experiences to critique and analyze “Western” medicine. It’s an interesting way to apply our readings/concepts and become case studies.
I have been lucky beyond words to have an advisor whose wife also has an autoimmune disease and thus understands more or less what I’m going through. She has been a staunch ally in helping me get whatever accommodations I need even though I don’t have any kind of official diagnosis yet. Also, because so many of my professors are physicians or well-versed in medicine, I don’t have to explain what’s going on and why I haven’t gotten an official diagnosis yet. They understand how the system works and have been more than accommodating. I know this wouldn’t happen in all PhD programs so I thank the stars all the time that I happened to fall into such a great department.
I always want to improve on what I’ve done previously and know being lighter is a big boost. I’ve been taking a medication for anxiety which hasn’t helped my weight, but hopefully I’ll be coming off that soon. A lot of people seem to think if you run a lot, you can eat whatever you want - simply not true. Well - you can, you just might not like the results if you do!
Bunsen, that article - motors inside racing bikes? That would never cross my mind!
I always get a kick out of some cyclists who must have the latest and greatest lightest component on their bikes at silly prices just to knock off 6 oz of weight. They forget that there is much more bang for the buck if you just shut your pie hole and knock a pound off your body weight. Price of a high end 15 lb carbon fiber race bike to replace your 17 lb steel frame bike - $6,000. Price of losing 10 lbs - $0. Guess which one will make you faster.
Motors in bikes? The next cheat will be developing a remote control to override the on-board motor controls to reverse the motor to act like a brake.
2 second per pound per mile may not sound much unless we are talking about a lot of miles and/or pounds!
I am debating whether I should wait and get the new Fitbit watch-like thingy or settle for the utilitarian-looking rubber band Charge HR. Decisions, decisions! I like the new Garmin 235, too…
I am training for an upcoming track meet (only my second one in recent history). I think losing 5 pounds will help in an 800m race. I had the same visual, ie imagined myself running around the track carrying an extra 5 lb weight - That would slow me down! 10 lbs would be even better, but I am not sure I can do that without losing strength too. I told my wife today that I am officially “in training”, so smaller portions, yogurt and fruit for breakfast, carrots for snacks, and 1/2 glass wine (or 1 beer) max with dinner. And, cutting back on bread (ummm… as soon as I finish this last loaf of Challah bread!!! )
NJres - I probably shouldn’t give a potential 800 meter competitor any tips! but I felt losing weight was HUGE in helping me drop 10 seconds when I ran the 2013 Senior Olympics. I want to be at 135 for summer track season and at 130 for the nationals in 2017.
I love, love, love my Garmin 235, but I don’t want to wear it all day to work. I want the new FitBit watch for work. I don’t have HR on my FitBit, and since the class action about it, I guess I don’t mind that I don’t have it. When I get bored in meetings I take my HR manually.
Romani, my H has an autoimmune disease. He’s doing so great now but it was tough until he got the right diagnosis and found the right rheumatologist. We feel so lucky now.
Just know that I’m pulling for you to get this figured out and on the road to feeling better.
Good for you, romani, for asking this board for help! It’s a great source of info. And the people on this board are champions at “doing it right” - not just shortcutting or trying to find hacks around it.
Thanks pg and deb. I looked at a few health forums but they just didn’t have what I was looking for for a variety of reasons. Then I remembered this thread and CCers as always came through. I have a sticky note on my laptop with CC health advice and things y’all recommended I bring up with my docs.
4k steps today so far. No stairs but I’m hoping to get to the 5k mark tonight again
