Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Deb how much snow is on the ground up there? Not a drop here right now (knock on wood - but some is probably coming next week).

Much more satisfying to exercise because you want to, then that you have to (to eat!) !!! Glad it was a good week.

@abasket, to answer your question from about 4 pages back… I don’t mind cooking, but for lunch I often wind up eating microwave food, because I don’t like sandwiches. I generally cook “well” Saturday and Sunday, maybe leftovers on Monday, spaghetti or chili about Tuesday, and as the week goes on it gets worse… Friday we almost always go out. Tonight I went to Costco, and I bought lots of fruits and veggies, including their kale salad which I really like, so next week I will be better. We will be having filet mignon tomorrow, and probably salmon on Sunday. We’ve cut out most starchy stuff, but do occasionally have baked potatoes. I try to eat what I think are “better” microwave meals - Amy’s and Cedar Lane, for example. I am working on my husband to start eating, and cooking better with me. It’s a work in progress.

The people I work with snap their fingers and Jimmy John sandwiches seem to be delivered to our office 2 or 3 times a week. Don’t forget the chips and Coke! They all have weight issues.

I for the most part don’t do sandwiches. Definitely not cold sandwiches!

Do you find the microwaved food satisfying - as in, enough? I don’t eat an overly large lunch, but those little plastic dishes seem like not enough to make me happy!!!

“Wow, BB, that’s an undertaking - Borscht!!”

Lol, abasket. I was floored by the fact that he found an oxtail at the grocery store and used it to make stock!! I make borscht often, but I have no patience for elaborate things like oxtail stock.

A dumbbell circuit tonight! Plus a mad dash up the hill to catch the elusive bus

Got my Fitbit Charge HR. It is chargin’. I have been assimilated!

Ah, BB, what will we do if our trackers form a Collective? And who among us will end up as the tracker Borg Queen?

LOL!!!

Welcome to the FitBorg, BB. Resistance is futile.

My legs didn’t hurt for a good part of the day but now they’re back to being in pain. Boo. But it was nice to feel almost normal for part of the day.

I’m at my in laws for Super Bowl weekend and gave them a health update (they asked). First thing my father in law wanted to know was whether or not it affected my fertility (not in those terms but close enough). ??? Huh???

Yes, I understand that they want grandkids but THAT’S his first question?

Oy vey.

Hang in there, Romani. Just smile and nod, nod and smile. I do it whenever my SIL starts another (usually racist) rant. Do I want to debate her? It will just make her angry and bitter. I just let her comments fly over my head and change the topic of the conversation.

Correct me if I’m wrong, I think you mentioned that you like to wear one pair of shoes until it gets all beaten up. Many runners buy 2 pairs: the idea is to let one pair “rest” and get back to its shape while the other pair is taking a beating, then switch. Apparently, 2 pairs will last longer than one pair’s lifespan x2. I alternate my city shoes as well. I think it helps take pressure off my legs.

I just needed to vent because it really threw me off.

I do generally wear only one pair. However, when I’m home I don’t wear shoes and I’m home about half the week. But I’ll keep that in mind. Actually shoes was going to be one of things I bring up with my yet-to-be-visited PT. I did invest in a good pair of shoes about 2 months ago (maybe longer? Everything is running together.) and am more than happy to invest in another.

On another tech note, my phone just decided to no longer read Sim cards yesterday. So that was my signal for a new phone. I have zero interest in the latest, greatest phone but I do need something sturdy (I’m clumsy) and with a long battery. Decided on the Samsung S6 Active because it fit my needs and budget.

Anyway, in playing around with it I’ve discovered that it has a heart rate monitor, a spo2 monitor, and stress detector. Needless to say, I’m very amused by this discovery.

The phone heart monitors aren’t accurate. I was excited by that feature but it’s useless.

Romani- definitely get good shoes. It will make a huge difference. I would recommend Hoka Bondi B or Hoka Stinson for you.

Snow day yesterday – as in I didn’t drive to the gym because that would have meant moving my car (obviously) from its current parking spot on the street. And parking spaces during snowstorms are worth their weight in gold around here! More snow predicted for Monday/Tuesday.

Re: cooking – H doesn’t cook, period. He heats up leftovers in the microwave and that’s about it. Many years ago he even abdicated grilling, although once in a great while he’ll try to take over that duty when we have company. There’s one couple who visit us at the beach fairly often that I always welcome with open arms – he cooks up a storm! Even after several years of only cooking for 2, I find that to be a challenge. Some things really can’t be cut in half, and there are many, many leftovers that H won’t eat. (I jokingly call him a food snob.) So, although I cook almost every night, it’s on my terms: lots of salad and veggies, grilled protein whenever possible since it’s easy and less messy, and low carb. I can’t remember the last time I cooked any pasta. Winter cooking is more difficult than summer cooking, IMO.

I’m up near Sewanee at a retreat. I had to get out early this morning, but did 7 miles. Started with a headlamp. I have to cross over the interstate before I hit the path, which isn’t great. There’s a sidewalk and it was early so almost no cars, but it isn’t great.n the path towards Sewanee is great, though, and pretty flat for an otherwise very hilly area. It was a cold but pretty morning with no wind,

Up early to do 10 miles with the running group, followed by lunch with the San Diego CC group - fun!

No worries mowc, I’m using the monitor for entrainment purposes only

Thank you for the shoe recommendation!

8 and change this morning with my running group followed by breakfast - good times.

Welcome to Fitbit land, BB!

Have fun with the CC group Gertrude!

This will be a walking day for me. I’ve had a cold for 3-4 days and after yesterday’s AlterG run, my legs felt really tired for the first time in a long time. It was especially noticeable walking up steps at the Cavs game last night.

Think I’ll take the dog for a walk in the woods. He likes chasing the deer.

90 minutes skiing. But…I have a blister on my heel. A bad blister. Ugh!

Gertrude, have a great time.

Today I found out that my in laws have a personal sauna in their basement. I didn’t know this was a thing that existed.

So now I’m sitting in a sauna box and life is good.
