“To my way of thinking, it’s the search for the non-existent magic bullet.” Bingo- that would be the theme over there.
Though it appears that I might be getting a little chastised for it …I did really just wonder if I didn’t know something about the advantages of protein for the average person. I personally never have the issue of missing meals, so… in my life, that’s been a non-issue - I always make time to eat!!
Still would appreciate your thoughts MK should you happen to see my post #48517 - on this thread, where I need to chain myself to apparently - on protein supplements as noted in the post.
I think everyone on both threads is trying… I am certainly a lightweight ( no pun intended) here. I’m just thankful for the support from everyone
abasket,
if you are referring to my post, I will add protein powder when my diet in any given day is largely fruits/vegetables. Its a simple effort to get some protein into the diet. We are all working towards the same goal, and all of us appreciate the encouragement. The perception that some, or possibly many, are looking for a “magic bullet” seems unfair, IMO, FWIW.
abasket- In our carb heavy world, it can be difficult to get enough protein, especially if you limit meat. I feel that I generally get enough with yogurt, cheese, eggs and meat. Sometimes I feel like I am light on protein- it’s not a conscious calculation, but I just feel like I need more. I’m just not good at going to the trouble of mixing up smoothies or other drinks, but I have used protein powders in the past. Protein is good at helping you feel more full, so there is that!
That’s great jym, I simply asked MK for his opinion on the topic - not based on a single post of anyone’s but more than one relating to protein supplements.
I’m all for encouragement - it’s what got me here now at age 56 when I found a pretty winning recipe for my health and fitness at age 53. I have ALWAYS felt encouraged on this thread - encouraged and challenged in a “you can do it!” way - so yep, I value encouragement. MY perception is that recently if you wear a D/H/E/W badge, your “encouragement is over the top” and not always welcome on the other thread. Sad! Which is why I posed my question here.
Also, I don’t know that we’re all working towards the same goal even within this thread. Your mileage varies, so to speak! (literally and figuratively!) But, there is room for many here - and more!
So I’ll just keep hanging out here.
Agree, abasket. I used the wrong buzzwords on the other thread at one point and offended someone, so I decided it was wise to stay over here. I’ve learned so much here since 2009 and appreciate all of you. We’ve all had frustrations and have had to learn the reality of what works for each of us.
Your post was not of concern, abasket. We all appreciate the wisdom and knowledge of others, and recognize that we are all at different places. The shared goal I see is general health fitness and a desire to take care of ourselves and be attuned to our personal choices. We all benefit from that self care and from the support and encouragement of others, regardless of what level we are at.
And with that said , I just got a call to attend the Hawks- Magic basketball game with courtside seats, drinks, free food, and hob-knobing with some faces I might recognize. So I guess i’d better stop drinking my fruit smoothie as I will now be getting calories elsewhere!
Meant to add: Yes, you are correct abasket, that several people were discussing protein powder and supplements in the other thread. Its absolutely fine to ask MK, there, where it was being discussed, or here, or both. Its all good.
@abasket, I am of the general view that macro-nutrients, including protein, should in general be obtained from real food so that you are also getting essential micronutrients. The amount of protein one needs can vary greatly depending on age, weight, gender, activity level and specific training goals. As a general matter, sedentary adults need about .75 gms per kilo of body weight to maintain a balance between protein lost due to normal daily wear and tear and the intake of protein that is needed to replace that which is lost. If you add in things like growth spurts or specific training regimens, like body building or power lifting, the needs increase to as high as 1 gm per pound! But the reality is, your body can’t store excess protein. If you take in more than your body needs, it will be broken down and burned for energy and what’s left over is stored as fat! And it’s not a very efficient energy source.
Protein powders are good to supplement your protein from your normal diet if you need to do do but I would first make sure that your meal plans are well structured. Then if appropriate use a protein supplement. For me, I use a protein powder as part of a recovery smoothie after a long, strenuous high intensity bike ride. I will also use it as part of a liquid soul food meal when I want a smoothie for lunch or a late dinner. But then it is part of a structured smoothie that has lots of other good stuff in it. I try to get in about 125-150 gms of protein /day based on my weight of 154 lbs. but that’s only because of the intensity of the training I do and the need to replace protein lost and to have protein to build additional muscle.
jym, I’m the one who used the term “magic bullet” and I will stand by that. I am a plain speaker. I feel comfortable expressing my opinion here - whether is be on competitive runners looking for a supplement that will push them to BQ status or someone promoting the next diet fad that will just lead to the vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting that I experienced in the past. I am sorry if you feel that is unfair. I have felt very unwelcome on the other thread and as a result have recently only read and not commented there. I hope that is allowed.
Amen.
Each thread has its readers and its focus and its tone. It seems that sadly, that sometimes comments are misread or aren’t seen in the same light that others may see or intend them. Just as some readers were bothered by the suggestion that the other thread’s theme is looking for a magic bullet, too at one point, some poster referenced posters in this thread as “hardcore” and that wasn’t taken well either. Perhaps the lesson we all can learn from this is that in our goal to be helpful and supportive, it is helpful to be mindful as to how something might be seen/read/heard by others.
The only reason I responded here is because abasket commented that she felt chastised, and I simply wondered, if she was referring to something I posted in the other thread about the protein powder, since that is where it was being discussed. There is pattern of several posters in one thread feeling unwelcome in the other, and that is a true shame. But it clearly goes both ways, which is most unfortunate.
And with that, I have a game to get ready for, and I too will go back to “my people”
Just back from a really enjoyable Pilates class. We used the Bosu in conjunction with squats, push ups and leg work. Extremely challenging! I am so close to mastering my rollover - I will be thrilled when I finally have it.
abasket, I was going to ask how your sprouts turned out. I used coconut oil to cook mine - they seemed fairly popular, but I have to say more people ate the Reuben dip (which was very good).
At one point? How about over and over and over? jym, it’s been more than one poster who has referred to us as hardcore. It’s been continuous and I, for one, am tired of it. Maybe you think it’s funny but I don’t. How’s that for a lesson in how something might be seen/read/heard by others?
It was an example of something that apparently is for whatever reason a sensitive spot with some, and again helps us all to be sensitive to what may be seen as nothing by some is seen as something by others.
I never said it, but it sounds like a compliment to me.
Carry on folks.
Take care, folks.
Each indoors flight of stairs in my house is 13 stairs so 61 stairs is not an awful lot. Did you mean 61 flights of stairs?
Sabaray, I think YOU sprouted many sprouts on tables yesterday! I made them and my D made them for her party too! I ended up just roasting my sprouts and making the siracha aioli (hummus based) which was DELICIOUS. My D followed the recipe and pan fried her sprouts - I think hers did benefit from a little more “crunchy” on the outside.
As well, my reuben bake was very popular!
Today was mostly a rest day. The arctic cold is suppose to arrive soon. Took advantage of the almost 40 degrees and took pup for a long walk when I got home from work and then took myself for another couple miiles of brisk walking (pup is pokey!) I thought I would just end up with my minimum steps but the extra “oomph” will bring me to a decent total for the day!
My Fitbit told me an interesting piece of trivia today: my hill walk is an equivalent of a 1.2 mile 20-story climb.
What is a D/H/E/W badge?
For what it’s worth, I read both threads. Any and all encouragement welcome! And in return, I encourage all of you to keep on keeping on, you’re great!
"Each indoors flight of stairs in my house is 13 stairs so 61 stairs is not an awful lot. Did you mean 61 flights of stairs? "
Fitbit calls them “floors” on the dashboard (I use W7 laptop to synch, could not do it until we got the Internet back, so could not remember the exact terminology). So every time I run up the stairs on the second floor of my house, it is one count. 61 - it means I ran up to the second floor and then back down 61 times!
Half of it was laundry. The other half was stopping the cat from ripping the carpet to shreds (she wanted my attention). Lol. I just never counted how often I go up and down when I am home.
