Whine here, you are warned. Tried to ski this morning, couldn’t. I have blisters on both of my heels. H thinks I need to take a week off to let them heal. Ugh! But my feet really hurt and I have foot pain from trying to compensate from the blisters.
H and I were talking this morning about what he was going to do when he retires. He said retiring means he could work out twice a day instead of once. lol And work on remodeling our house.
Walked 2 miles today and went to a relax and restore yoga class. Back in time for H’s Super Bowl chili. He was home last week and watched The Chew–got inspired to make an oxtail chili recipe ala Mario Batalli. It smells great–H has been working on it all day.
MOWC - I’ve read that Kenyan coaches never tell their runners the interval track agenda before practice starts. Their philosophy is that if runners know that they are going to run 10x400s before practice starts then they will adjust/plan/compensate for running 10 400s. So the philosophy is don’t let them know specifics. They’ll be thinking too far ahead. The coaches won’t give the runners the quantity. They’ll only let them know they are running 400s and only let them know when they are finished. They say they get better performance and less anxiety/complaining from the runners. That’s where I think a coach would be good for me. When I’m the coach for me, sometimes I think I’m too easy on the runner! In hs and college I was a huge complainer and whiner when the coach would announce the workout.
Ran a MAF treadmill test where I started out at 4 MPH pace (15 min mile pace) and increased the mph .2 every .2 miles. I eventually quit at 8 mph or 7:30 pace which was a little over an hour and my HR was at 176 bpm. Wanted to get at my max HR (think it is 185) but didn’t think it was going to happen unless I increased the pace to under 6:00 min mile pace and I was tired and getting the treadmill crazy feeling.
Tired again today? This Whole30 diet thing probably not good for me. Need more carbs. Hey, if Oprah can eat bread every day and lose weight why can’t I ?
I am feeling drained–which will let me doze on the couch while DH watches The Game. I think he’s planning to wake me for the good commercials. I had a dog thing Friday afternoon–and ran the dog who wasn’t going, before I went. “Only” 20K steps and a whole lot of sprinting (the dog got awarded a prize for fastest in his group). 17K steps and even more sprinting Saturday. Today more sprinting, and then I came home, ran the dog who didn’t get to go (thankfully, she was feeling slow too), and then did an hour’s worth of yardwork. I’m actually contemplating an Advil to go with my nap.
However, all the fitness work and running I did while on vacation the last few weeks REALLY paid off this weekend. I was noticeably faster and so was the dog.
“(the dog got awarded a prize for fastest in his group)”
No kidding! Trying to run with a woman who does a sub-30 5K is not for every dog! Congrats to the dog and the handler. (My sister did agility for a while until her business and her kids consumed all of her time - she said it was fun and she missed it ).
It’s several pages back now (dang this thread moves fast!) but someone suggested that I look at exercise services offered by my U and I wanted to say thank you to the people who recommended that! They apparently specifically have a program for people with special physical/health needs and there is a free consultation. (After that it’s a paid program to work with a Personal Trainer but at least the consultation is free!) Plus it seems like they have special pricing for students.
I’ll be calling this week to make an appointment
ETA: Oops, I missed that you had to be in treatment or post-PT in order to qualify so I guess I’ll talk to my doctor first (appt on Wednesday) and THEN call if she clears me
@BunsenBurner and @MomofWildChild – that dog is my personal trainer. He’s been fast from the beginning, and he’s dragged me along with him. When I’m too slow (in his opinion), he yells at me. He’s nipped my butt once when I got in his way. If he were a human coach, he’d be Bobby Knight. Fortunately, he’s a dog, and when we’re not running, he’s very sweet. It seems silly to say he’s changed my life, but he’s absolutely forced me to get more fit, in an effort to keep up!
Lol, dmd! Good for you to have such a cool personal trainer.
Fitbit is an interesting tool. Yesterday, I mostly sat on my butt all day long and studied while doing some cooking and some laundry in the breaks. Still, I was able to reach 7,600 steps and climb (!) 61 stairs - I kid you not!! Laundry and my tortie cat are my stair masters.
dmd- I have had 2 cats named Bobby Knight! Good for your doggie!
Bunsen- the FitBit can get a little addicting for those of us who might be prone to a little obsessiveness. To me, that’s not a bad thing! I can’t relate to people who can’t remember to wear it or charge it.
Lol, MOfWC, it turns out that we are a family of obsessive addicts. Yesterday, Mr. was so determined to hit his 10,000 steps target he ran around the backyard in the dark to get the last 700 steps in. I do not think I even need a buzzer reminding me to get off my butt! I am still shocked that I ran so many times up and down the stupid stairs!
61 is A LOT of stairs! Do you have a landing/turn in the stairs? Maybe some of that was counted as two flights???
I’ve been known to yell at my H when he says,“I’m going to take the dog out for his last mini-walk of the night” -and I’ll yell, “NO! I need the extra steps!!” - like, what was he THINKING!!! LOL!
“61 is A LOT of stairs! Do you have a landing/turn in the stairs? Maybe some of that was counted as two flights???”
I checked maybe 15-20 times; Fitbit correctly counts the stairs as one flight, landing and all. My tortie cat was itching to get my attention though, so I had to make a few dashes up the stairs to make her stop clawing the life out of the top stair. It is quite hilarious: she makes a loud “mrrrawww!” noise, runs up the stairs, and hangs off the step upside down looking at me. If I don’t go up, she starts clawing the carpet.
I went up and down two sizable flights of stairs today. Slowly, but I did it. Two of my friends (who know what is going on more or less) were walking with me and cheering me on the whole way. I felt kind of embarrassed about it but they were cheering me on sincerely.
I’ve also already walked more today than the last two days combined and feeling ok about it. The weather is not too cold so my joints are happy with that
MK, on the Weight Loss For Dummies thread there is a lot of talk about protein drinks/supplements.
For the average person who is doing light exercise and maybe working at getting a few thousand steps in a day, would it even be necessary to ingest protein products?? Wouldn’t a good balanced diet including lean proteins and a nice balance of other foods be adequate??? I don’t know why some seem to think the protein powders etc. are the answer - unless you have some special diet needs or are participating in a rigorous exercise plan???
That would be me! It is interesting. I get a lot of steps with the pups. Sabapup and I are working on her manners and confidence while on a solo walk. She is so attached to Sabadog that she gets nervous about venturing out without him. So, I’m taking extra walks with her so she can build her confidence.
I do like protein powders for quick meal replacements. Vega powder, peanut butter, banana, berries and nut milk. Easy on my stomach post exercise, I guess! I have heard of some of the supplements they are discussing, but in the context of triathletes and more competitive runners using them for performance enhancement. To my way of thinking, it’s the search for the non-existent magic bullet.
