Well, you know I would go with the fat! Carrageenan has been controversial as an additive - as a general rule, the simpler the food, the more I like it. My husband says I’m a sucker for buzzwords and phrases like “organic” - “non-GMO verified” - “certified humane” - but even he admits our food tastes better now. Just my personal preferences and it’s easier when you’re an empty nester.
Just make sure where “organic” food comes from. You would be surprised how many organic things are made in/contain ingredients made in China! I would rather eat “inorganic” food made in the US.
No worries, Bunsen - I don’t think my raspberries are coming to Virginia from China! I pay very close attention to anything food related - especially for Sabadog and Sabapup. There have been some very sad stories that relate back to Chinese products.
Ugh, anything you stick in your mouth sourced from China is suspect! You have no idea what your really getting.
A question for the folks who like to use Ezekiel’s bread… Is there more than one brand making this type of sprouted grain bread? The reason why I am asking is that I found some in the freezer section of my local grocery store, but the bread sadly becomes very brittle when frozen, and it is impossible to peel slices off the pre-sliced loaf without them crumbling into dust. This seems to be an inherent property of the bread because. What are your experiences? How do you handle this? Oh, one thing: it has to be plain bread because we don’t like our breads with raisins etc.
Can’t use the edit function.
apologies for the typos in my post above.
I would not be concerned about fresh produce and meats. Packaged things like grains, nuts, juices, canned things… Even if the label says “organic,” I always check the source. Some stuff will have a large “made in the US” sign on them with “from apples grown in China.” Have seen this quite a few times!
We aren’t allowed to link to blogs, but if anyone wants a good summary of who might make the men’s Olympic team, check out www. runwietecha.blogspot . com He is our top local runner and he has a good analysis.
I usually buy mine at Costco - the two loaf pack. I freeze it and take out a few slices for the week. No problem getting the slices to separate and out. My son told me he bought Ezekiel’s at Trader Joe’s - I wonder if that is the same brand???
Needed a break from running today and have a busy late afternoon so took a work break and went and did 30 minutes on the arc trainer - nice change of pace!
Sometimes, biomedicine and I are not friends. This is not one of those times.
The NSAID my PCP put me on yesterday has already performed a minor miracle on my joints. I feel the best that I have in months and have already gone nearly 4k steps today with virtually no pain.
Yay
Abasket, thanks! It sounds like there are several brands making this type of bread. I will check Costco and TJ, too. The one I bought was already frozen. I guess starting from fresh bread would solve the crumbling issue - I will just make sure to freeze my leftovers carefully.
romani, I am blessed with relative good health (aside from the typical aches and pains of a 50+ year old) and reading your story has made me appreciate just how blessed I am. I’m glad you’re feeling better, and I hope the improvement continues.
Romani, just wanted to say that if you can fight off the unnecessary weight gain and keep it off now, your middle aged body will thank you later!
Yesterday’s 17,200+ steps and 65 floors are my PR since I began the Fitbit odyssey. I highly doubt that I would go for a PR today, but 10,000 steps and maybe a run are a possibility.
Thank you, fireandrain
That is a big reason why I want to get into shape now, BB. Plus I know that getting in shape now will be much better for both me and future Romani Jr if/when I decide to get pregnant.
I’m off steroids now and am back to feeling like a real human again so I am very eager to get back to working out.
I am really, truly in awe of how one simple medicine can be literally life changing. Very few of my illnesses and conditions have had a “quick fix” method (yes, I know it’s not a “fix” but you know what I mean) like this so it is truly just amazing.
Mr R is actually going to be gone this weekend for his brother’s bachelor party and it’s just my roommate and me. We’ve already signed up for a few one-week pass to check out a facility which has a pool near us. So that’s what we’re planning on doing this week.
I’m especially excited for something they have there called water walking. I’ve never heard of this but basically they close down a few lanes to be used solely to walk against the water resistance. It’s supposed to be easier on your joints but the resistance makes it more intense than just walking on a track.
Any chance there are aquajogging classes you can sign up for?

Oh I’m not sure BB, but I’ll definitely look into that. Thanks!
@BunsenBurner, Ezekial is a brand name for sprouted grain breads. They offer several varieties of sliced bread and “English” muffins. The muffins aren’t a problem since each muffin is a separate unit. I pop it in the micro for 35 seconds to defrost it and then separate the halves and put in in the toaster. The sliced bread can be a problem. Sometimes the frozen loaf can’t easily be separated into slices and the slice I’m trying to take breaks. I’ve found that using a table knife to pry the frozen pieces start usually works well if I’m having trouble separating them by hand. You can avoid the problem altogether by eating my favorite - the Cinnimon Raisin muffin :).
YES. Water walking is suppose to be a very, very good workout.
Heard elsewhere: “There is no elevator to weight loss. You have to take the stairs.”
@MichaelNKat - thanks! I thought it was branded but asking the question here is usually more informative than asking Google.
