Thank you Michael…we actually did buy a stability ball at a garage sale we’ve never used. To be honest, I’m half afraid it will flip out underneath me! Maybe not. We also have an ab roller I started using today, but it’s putting a lot of strain on my neck and shoulders, and I have issues with that area of my body. I know we are supposed to hold in our abs and keep the back straight…I might be trying to push out further than I should putting undue strain on the tops of my shoulders. Is this something that just happens, or am I just doing it incorrectly?

Congrats to C3Baker and husband! Well done.

It is raining hard again! Thank goodness I listened to the weatherman and did go outside yesterday. Mr. wants to go for a walk with our extra large umbrellas to get his 10,000 steps in. I like this better than my idea of a treadmill run. The weatherman says we will see 60 degrees by the end of the week.

MOfWC, hope you are feeling better today. Fingers crossed.

Hope you stay dry BB and Mr. BB!!! 3.5 mile run outside, dressed too warm. So tricky this time of year! I hate to walk out the door cold, but then I end up a sweat ball! That, plus my 11,000 steps which I will reach by evening with pup walks will round out the day. Catching up on some office work today too so it’s been nice to alternate desk work with activity.

Thanks, abasket! I looked at the hourly forecast - 4 pm is the sweet spot. Maybe I can do some more hill work.

I feel better but not great. Thanks. I have 2 more days on the antibiotic. I never feel very energetic when I am taking antibiotics, although that shouldn’t be a problem. I am coughing a lot less and have my voice about 75% back.

6.4 miles- 66 degrees! It felt very hard, and my HR was too high. I couldn’t seem to slow it down enough to have it feel comfortable. 31.2 mile week instead of the 36 mile goal, but for being sick that’s not too bad. This week is going to be tough, too, with our annual sales meeting here in town and business functions early morning Mon and Tues and dinners both nights. The steps won’t be a problem, since we are in the huge convention center and it seems like I walk miles during these events.

Glad you’re feeling better MOWC. I’ve turned the corner as well. I did 6.5 very slow miles this morning. My legs needed it, but my respiratory system was less than pleased. I really needed to get back out there though - I didn’t get any running done in NYC.

@abasket, yay, it worked! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was about to use a ball peen hammer on my iPad!

@conmama, stability balls come in different sizes and you want to choose the correct size for you. I’m 5’8"" tall and I use a 65 cm stability ball. Someone who is in the neighborhood of 5’4" should probsbly use a 55.

If you are new to planks, the ab roller is probably more challenging than you should initially try. Instead work on static planks from an elbow base or if your arms are strong enough, with your arms extended. Either way you want your joints stacked when you are in the up position. That means from the elbow base position, your elbows should be in alignment with your shoulders. In the arm extended position, your wrists, elbows and shoulders should be aligned. Once you can hold a static plank on your elbows for a minute, try progressing to extended arms. Once you can hold that for a minute, you’re ready to try some additional challenges like elevating your feet using a step bench, elevating your feet on a stability ball, adding dynamic movement like Mountain Climbers, resting your forearms on a stability ball and moving the ball side to side or out and back. All sorts of variations are possible. In order to progress to using the ab roller, I would first recommend that you build up to doing 10 slow push-ups in a plank position counting to 3 in the top plank and bottom plank position before the down and up of the push-up.

The key with all planks, regardless of which variation, is to maintain good form. Picture a straight line from your heels to your butt to your shoulders across the back of your head. Contract your abs, glutes, quads and hamstrings. A proper plank is really a whole body exercise

MOWC, you still sound a bit miserable yet - 6.4 miles! You amaze me! Sometimes it is so daunting to know from the get-go that the work week is going to be a little hellish.

MK, so glad the tips worked!

MOWC, I am in awe once again. My new goal is to be 10% as fit and energetic as MOWC is when she’s sick

I have been feeling really tired the last few days. Wrote it off as just part of the new normal but then had a sore throat last night. Woke up with a full blow cold. My colds almost always turn into sinus infections or bronchitis. I’m really hoping this just passes and I don’t have to go to the doctor. I already have two appointments this week and I’m kind of getting sick of sitting in clinics

Ugh, Romani. I hope yours isn’t as bad as mine. My colds, too, turn into bronchitis almost all the time.

I’m really not energetic right now. It was a struggle to get myself out to run. Thanks, though. I just do it anyway. I tell myself that I’m lucky to be able to do it and I shouldn’t complain to myself! I hear you about the doctor appointments. That’s how I feel about all my eye stuff that is still going on. I drive in traffic to the appointments, sit and wait, and go back and do it all again in two weeks!

I took the day off yesterday, kind of. Did a ton of house cleaning and gardening chores for my mom. I thought of idad and his farmer carries while I hauled bags of dirt up stairs. I got out for a run early this evening for 4 beach miles. It was in the low 70’s, a bit warm and humid, but I just stayed slow and it felt okay. Stopping for photos or to pick up a sea shell wreaks havoc on the pace, too! The key lime pie at a late lunch didn’t help matters

Sometimes I have to tell myself “don’t run for the pace, just run for the enjoyment of it” If I want to stop for sec and take in the view of the sprawling water, I should do it!!!

I stop to look at things, but I stop my Garmin!

Ok, actually I do that too. Sort of obsessively. Car coming? STOP THE TIMER!!!

Lol, I need to learn to remind myself to stop my Garmin! Otherwise, I would be forever bound to run on the trails with no stop signs and bathroom breaks.

The walk with Mr. was a very good idea. Cannot believe that our little neighborhood is 60 ft above the main road.
Back to my homework.

I’m going to throw out this question here just in case anyone has any experience with it…

Has anyone ever started having vivid dreams due to a medication? I have started like 5 new meds in the last few weeks and I’ve started having more and more vivid dreams culminating in having a nightmare where I woke up screaming Friday night. I’ve never, ever done anything like that. It’s rare that I even dream let alone have nightmares. Even as a kid I never had night terrors or anything of the sort.

I’ve also been through WAY more stressful things than this and that never affected my sleep (though, admittedly, it could be a new way that stress is manifesting itself!)

I didn’t think to connect it to my meds until a few minutes ago and I’m going to call a pharmacist tomorrow and see what they say but in the meantime…

Yes, it is a known side effect of many drugs. Also a common side effect of the withdrawal from other medications. Definitely contact your doctor.

I got the email that my new Fitbit Blaze has shipped! I am excited and looking forward to getting it later this week!

Michael-thanks for the great info on planks and the stability ball. I do lots of those exercises with my trainer at the gym. I’ve asked for a stability ball for Mother’s Day (I forgot to ask for it for Christmas) and I’m glad to know what size I should be using. At the gym I just use whatever is available.
