Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Did a phenomenal ride yesterday with members of the women’s race team I sponsor. 46 miles of mixed hills and flats in Hunterdon County NJ. Temperature hit low 50’s. Great company, great group riding skills and etiquette. The highlight was a well oiled rotating double pace line for about 11 miles on a flat road along the Delaware River with super wide shoulders and almost no driveways, side streets etc that gave us the room to do it without needing to be concerned with vehicular traffic. Can’t wait for Spring and more of the same.

Will be awaiting a report on the Blaze!

Sounds like a great ride, Michael!

@romanigypsyeyes – B vitamins (most specifically, B1) give me screaming nightmares, mostly about snakes and bombs.

@MomofWildChild – how’s your son doing on his recovering from his bike accident? And glad to hear you’re getting better, it seems a lot of people are getting nasty respiratory stuff this winter.

@MichaelNKat – sounds like fun!

Thanks!

Pharmacist thinks prednisone is the most likely culprit. She suggested taking it in the morning instead of night and if it doesn’t improve to call the doctor.

Yesterday was a day off for me as we went with friends to a restaurant we wanted to try and then walked around.

Back on the treadmill this AM. Today is the first day in my new office so I am trying to figure out how that will work. Looks like there are places to walk to and when I get access to the fitness center I might try weight training a few times per week during my break.

Well, took my first “gently flow yoga” class during lunch. It is hard for me to “bear through” NOT cardio. My take is it was ok and the 2nd half definitely better than the first half (I totally am not on board with the meditation part of it - I know, I know, that’s the basis!!!) but I think that I do not want to take class time (and work time) to do this on a regular basis. I could do it at home on off days with a GymBox video.

Can’t judge after just one time - I will go back if it easily works out, but I think time wise, during my work day, I’d rather do something else.

None the less, 40 minutes of stretching in!

Abasket: I think you would be better served by a different type of yoga class. If you want something more vigorous, look for power yoga or a Level 2 or 3 Vinyasa flow class or an Ashtanga class. These will have less focus on the meditative aspects of yoga–you can’t totally avoid it. I think it is important to find a class/teacher that works for you to get the most out of a yoga class.

There is IMO a huge difference across yoga studios and among teachers. Even if you do classes on line–try different types so you find what works fir you.

I went to yoga today as well–advanced level (2) Vinyasa. Also walked my puppy for a mile this morning.

Dmd- he went to the hand doctor today and got out of the soft cast into a finger thing ( mainly tape). He swam a couple of times last week. Replacing his dental bridge was $6k. We are working ( with Michael’s help) in getting counsel to try to recoup that. He kept running and biking. Thanks for asking!

Abasket - I second the suggestion to look for the yoga classes that are more cardio / flow oriented. I too cannot get into any meditation.

Yeah, I’m sitting there with my eyes closed thinking of all the stuff I left behind on my desk that needs to be done, while the instructor is saying “let go of all your worries…your responsibilities…your stresses…you are here now and one with the earth…” - I’m thinking, "is it appropriate to burst out laughing (or crying) right now!!!

No disrespect to the instructor or the class - clearly I am not the perfect student. At the same time I probably would benefit from the basics of this class before moving to something more fast paced, strenuous so I don’t hurt myself!

OMG, abasket, that is too funny! This was the thing that killed yoga for me - I could not stop thinking about the crap that was going at work etc. when everyone else was zoning out.

abasket- that was difficult for me in yoga, too. I did better with hot yoga when all I thought about was “Oh my God. I’m going to die!”

Geez, and I thought our bond was our fitness goals – turns out we’re all not into the meditation part of yoga. I go to yoga for the stretching and balance and challenge. I don’t even like closing my eyes. I’ve gone to practices with several teachers, and there’s one that everyone loves that I’m totally indifferent to because she goes on and on about mind, body, yadda yadda.

Thanks for the update on your son, MoWC. I was going to ask, too. $6000! Wow. Although I guess on the general scale of health costs, that’s just a drop in the bucket.

Swam today and did some weights.

I totally respect the people who can and enjoy the meditation part. I’m sure too, it takes more than one trip to a class to achieve that practice.

Or maybe my mind wanders too much. Here I am in one point in class…“oh, so they do play a little background music in yoga class…wait…that music sounds like the background music on the reality show Survivor! COOL!”

The problem is the dental bridge isn’t covered by medical. We are going to try, since it was an accident, but it is considered cosmetic, if you want teeth…

^^^ Kind of awful!!!

Fitbit cinderelling accomplished!

ETA - I noticed that the battery was low, so I started running in circles trying to get my 10,000 steps in before the battery could run out of charge! Did not want to plug it and wait!

@BunsenBurner, I hope you reversed directions periodically to avoid the dreaded Small Radii Effect Torque Syndrome that recent studies show afflicts chronic Cinderella Fitbit users. Symptoms include dizziness, nausea and in extreme cases the development of noticeable leg length discrepancies caused by the constant efforts of the outside leg to catch up to the inside leg.

You guys are too funny. Good job on the yoga, abasket! I find yoga really challenging - the flows are really difficult for me. I actually like hot yoga but just don’t have the time to build a regular practice. My Pilates sessions and classes always start with a “full body scan” - closing your eyes and thinking about what is hurting that particular day. We also do that at the end and I almost always feel so much better. No meditation though!

Nothing but rain here. Yesterday I went to a Barre class in the morning followed by Pilates in the afternoon, and my legs and hips are letting me know it today. My mat work has really improved, though - I can see the benefit of the equipment practice. It never gets any easier though. If the rain stops today, I’ll get my run outside - if not, treadmill time it will be.
