Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

MOWC, sorry you’re still not feeling up to snuff :(. I’d send good wishes for more energy but I kind of feel like I’m bad luck lol.

ohio, if you’re in Ohio, did you miss the snow?

I saw a runner out earlier in the snow storm. It just seemed like a bad idea all the way around because we live in an area with a lot of pot holes and other ruts that are covered by the snow. I am just picturing someone stepping in a hole and twisting their ankle. :frowning:

I just took some Tylenol for the inflammation about a half hour ago. I’m on an NSAID so I know I’m not supposed to take Ibuprofen and I wanted to check with my doctor before taking any pain meds.

A wild thought Romani, are you still on the prednisone? Prednisone can mess with a lot of things. When I’m tapering or mostly when I’ve finished my course, it could cause joints to really hurt. With the combination of the fall and the meds, just a thought.

Good luck and glad you got an appointment for tomorrow.

I’m still on prednisone. I’m at 15 mg and will start tapering off tomorrow or the next day.
(Side note: I’m really not looking to the “tapering off” process :frowning: )

I’ll add that to my list of questions to ask the Rheum tomorrow. Thanks!

(Also arranged a ride out there. My roommate/best friend is taking me. It’s at 8 AM and it’s a 45 minute drive… I fully realize just how lucky I am to have people like him in my life.)

Romani, I hope you feel better and get some medical answers.

My new Fitbit Blaze arrived yesterday. I like it! Still learning about it but initial impressions are that the profile is so much better than my Surge and it looks much nicer. I wish there were more/better options with the clock faces, but I’m hoping that they will come out with more with future updates. Maybe I’m not their target demographic but I like to be able to tell the time without my glasses, so I need large font on the clock face. I picked one that is large enough to read easily but some of the other faces are cooler, if I could only read them.

I’m intrigued by the link to FitStar. Does anybody have a FitStar account and if so, do you like it and think it’s worth it?

My Fitbit came with a code for a 90 day trial, but I have not used it. It does sound interesting.

I’d love to get some advice/opinions/brainstorming about increasing running mileage and walking mileage from the active runners in this group. I am currently running about 15-17 miles/week (long run of 5-7 miles) and walking about another 20 miles a week (mostly at about 17 min/mile, so not fast but not slow either). In the rare weeks where I have no dog agility competition on the weekend days I’d like to run 25 or so miles those weeks, but I know that traditional advice is not to increase mileage suddenly. But… when I do have dog agility competitions, I spend the day alternating walks and very short runs (the warmup, the actual round of competition, the cooldown–x5 or 6 runs) and end up usually with 20K to 25K steps.

So can I count my weekends toward my weekly mileage and replace those days of competition with a 3-4 mile run? Or is that an invitation for injury to attack me? Should I try it and see what happens? I’ve been worried about injuries, so I’m generally cautious about increasing mileage–so far, though, injury-free. (I also swim a few miles a week, substituting it for a run if I feel overworked.)

(Oh, and the suggestion of eating during the long run helped… my daughter suggested that both the queasiness and the tiredness would be helped with ginger chews (GinGins), so I tried one/mile on yesterday’s run, and felt fine when I finished–even though I went (a bit) faster and (a bit) longer.)

dmd, I found MarathonRookie’s training schedules quite helpful. They allow you to build up the mileage gradually. I think this half training schedule might work. I try to stick to the schedule and modify mine according to what else happens during that week.

Dmd - IMHO replacing those days with a 3-4 mile run shouldn’t be a problem

Workout with my trainer today and two walks (about 1.5 mile each with the puppy). Nasty thunderstorms and lightning last night really scared her. Today it’s in the 40s and the snow is gone.

@Bromfield2 – if the puppy is scared of thunder (a lot of dogs are), you might want to consider getting a prescription for alprazolam (generic Xanax) for her. It is an anti-anxiety medication that works well for dogs. My dog had a well-developed terror of thunderstorms, and I was able to use alprazolam to help her learn to relax during storms. She still sleeps in the back of the shower during fireworks, but she sleeps instead of trembling in fear.

dmd- I also think you can easily add that running into your schedule.

romani, I really empathize with the discomfort you are experiencing. Sometimes people with autoimmune diseases have a more intense reaction to a trauma that then takes a bit longer to resolve than anticipated. I see it up close with my family member. A couple of weeks ago, she tripped getting out of my car and fell on her knees and the palm of her hand. The knee pain and tenderness lasted longer than one would have thought even though there were no visible signs of swelling or inflammation. Hang in there, see what your doc has to say. I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks, Michael

I’m still in that stage where I just don’t know what to “expect” and what not to. And part of that probably comes from the fact that I still don’t have an “official” diagnosis.

I’m also hoping he’ll have my blood and x-ray results by tomorrow… I haven’t heard anything which I’m assuming means that they still haven’t told him much (ie mostly or all “in range”).

Ah well. Chuggin’ along, chuggin’ along.

I really got worn out at work, but I got on the treadmill when I got home. Managed 4 miles, shockingly. I slowed down a lot (not that I started fast to begin with) after 2 miles when I decided to go for the 4 miles. Watched the news.

My ankle is bothering me so I took it easy on the treadmill this AM.

I am now registered for the training group with the local running club. Starts in April.

Official diagnosis: overlap case. I am positive for both Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis. They are starting me on Lupus meds and transfusions for RA.

So at least now I have answers and should be on my way to some symptom control.

Romani, that really sucks, but the unknown sucks much worse. Hope it is all upwards from now.

MOWC - I hope you have a quiet weekend ahead so that you can get more rest. It will take time to get back to full strength.

Pizzagirl-have you recovered from your bout of illness?

Romani - sorry about your diagnosis, but I’m glad at least you know what you’re dealing with. I hope they can get your symptoms under control quickly.

I’m so sorry Romani, but at least now you know what you have to deal with (as C3B said). We’re all here to help!

I am still very weak. I had a Jamba Juice smoothie for dinner last night. That was all I could stand. I eat my normal breakfast and do OK at lunch, but by dinner I just really can’t eat. I did manage a fresh, warm, small Krispy Kreme donut this morning when I got an email announcing their arrival in a neighboring department here at work!

Big basketball game this weekend, but I’m spectating and not playing. I’ll be packed in with the most obnoxious fans in the history of sports, however, as the visiting Big Blue Nation travels to Nashville. The weather is supposed to be decent, so I may try to do a slow 5 miles tomorrow.
