It’s a internet challenge group to run/walk/crawl 2016 miles in 2016. It’s totally honor system, but you log your miles every day on a chart that is part of the group. There was a charge to enter, and you can get t-shirts, etc. I’m counting my running, dedicated walking miles (according to FitBit) and some days some random FitBit miles with a deduction for garbage steps (to the kitchen or printer, etc). I used to run 2000 miles a year, but a couple of years ago I decided that was too much mileage for me. It came to about 40 miles a week of running. I shoot for around 35 miles.
5.2 miles today outside on a flat path. I did a lot better than yesterday, so I guess I’m recovering! It still didn’t feel exactly easy, but I got faster with each mile. It was incredible weather- 65 degrees and sunny. I wore a Nuu-Muu dress with a short sleeved tech shirt over it. I took off the shirt with about 2 miles to go. I couldn’t believe I was in bare arms and legs at the end of February! I’m going to walk the dog now.
Ok advice needed. I just realized one of my meds is an immunosuppresent. I remember the Rheum telling me this when he was prescribing it but I was already so overwhelmed with information that I don’t remember if he said much about it.
Any tips or tricks on how to keep from getting sick from people who have been in this position? (IIRC we have a few cancer survivors on the board, though my immune system will not be anywhere as bad as it is when someone is on chemo.)
BB, you just crack me up with your Fitbit analysis of steps. I’ve had the thing for two years and it never occurred to me to keep track of how many steps it takes to make breakfast!
We live in a three-story house plus a basement (where the laundry and litter box is) so I climb a lot of stairs every day. I think I’m on my way to Mars or something – I don’t pay attention to the badges anymore.
Today I ran 3.8 miles on my own, and then got the husband outside doing some running intervals too, so the total came to 6.7 miles. He’s got two months to be in shape for our six day hike in Peru. He liked the kettlebell stair thing, so now we’ve got a kettlebell on our stairs, too. Only a 15 pounder, though. But good idea, so thanks, BB.
This past week, I’ve been very diligent about weighing myself and keeping track of food. The weight has fluctuated a lot, and I don’t see any connection between what I eat and what I weigh. Total mystery. I’ll keep doing it to see if any patterns develop.
MoWC, glad you are feeling better. Romani, no advice to give you, other than I really hope you feel better. FallGirl, impressed at climbing 11 flights at once. That’s impressive.
I decided against doing the 2016 challenge. I am keeping tabs on my running mileage. Just under 40 miles/month for both January and February.
Gertrude, I totally get it. There are times that I ride without my heart rate strap, with my Garmin GPS turned off, just so that I can lose my self in the joy of the ride without focusing on metrics. You can become so focused on stats that it causes stress and you forget the inherent joy of what you are doing which is really what keeps you coming back day after day.
Little of everything today.
AM -swimming steam sauna
PM - mountain bike to the track. Mile warmup, 4x200, 4x100, mile warm down, bike home. Older now and running against the wind.
Romani- I am really bad about this myself, but try to keep your hands out of your eyes and mouth. My admin also tried to stay away from crowds- especially where there would be a lot of hugging or hand shaking. She skipped our company Christmas party. She was in chemo.
I was thinking about the problem of being too “monitored” today. I feel like the very presence of my Garmin watch and the existence of my online running log causes me to run faster than I should. It’s not conscious, but I’m always aware of pace. I sometimes don’t look at it while I run, but today I wanted to make sure my HR was OK and that I wasn’t pushing too hard, which of course I was!
MOfWC, I can really relate to that! When I wear my Garmin, I feel obligated to keep up a certain pace. Even when I leave it at home, I still feel like I need to make the distance between the mile markers in under a certain time.
The weather is crazy! March is trying to arrive like a roaring lion, I guess - it is windy, sunny, and raining hard at the same time!
Romani, that is a good advice given by MOfWC: keep your hands clean and out of your eyes etc. and stay away from crowded places. One thing I want to add is that hand washing is critical. Hand sanitizer is not a replacement for soap and warm water, because certain bugs are not easily killed with alcohol (for instance, C. diff spores).
A squirrel, turtle, ducks, bald eagle, and Canadian geese were highlights from yesterday’s walk. There was the rabbit darting into the brush earlier in the day, too.
Today while running, encountered water. Okay, a doggie with person, too.
Is the weekend done already?! Darn! Went way too fast!
Today it was 66. Totally unheard of for February! Also, we had winds. I mean WIND ADVISORIES! Silly me, I went out for a run anyway - it was ROUGH. Great being out in the warmth - a tshirt and capris and I could have easily gone with shorts. But that wind - I felt like a cartoon! I was limited on time but got 3 miles in along with a lot of walking throughout the day.
I walked about 3.5 miles today. That’s it. But I did stop to watch dolphins hunting
It is definitely easy to stress about monitoring miles, pace HR, steps, etc. Sometimes I have to ignore it all be glad to be able to do the walks and runs, period. This will be a low mileage week, but I think I need it.
Thanks MOWC and BB. I’m terrible about touching my face though I am super good about handwashing. I try to avoid handsanitizer because it dries out my already dry hands but if it’s all that’s there, I’ll use it.
Roommate and I went on a walk and I made it another 1000 steps or so.
I also caved and am buying a walker. Just to have in case the flare ups get bad and I can’t walk around. Rather safe than sorry. But good grief these things are expensive!!
I was wondering if you could rent a walker. Or try craigslist. Sometimes insurance will cover it if you get a prescription, but they tend to balk at some stuff like that.
For sure check Craigslist - people have them for temporary purposes all the time and are looking to get rid of them. If you talk with one of your docs will they consider writing a script for one?
