PG: I do multiple activities (only two) but usually not back-to-back because the stuff I do isn’t in the same place. So I go home between activities and usually have one hard boiled egg and an orange or some other fruit like blueberries. I’ll also buy a decaf flat white from a local coffee shop. If I don’t have time to go home, I’ll pack fruit and a hardboiled egg. I have yet to find an energy/protein bar that I like. I think most of them are gross.
Long walk today—6 miles. Getting ready to do a one-day charity walk for hunger (20 miles) in May. I’ve done it without training, but it’s painful. If I start now by doing a long walk at least once a week, I’ll be fine.
Thanks. I just finished the second class and glad I waited. I ate some blackberries in between. I am now getting in the habit of carrying food with me all day long so I am not caught unprepared.
Bromfield, have you tried Kind Bars? Not high in protein but made with real pieces of fruit and nuts and oats. very good for carb replenishment and there are a gazillion varieties so odds are you could find a flavor you like.
6.1 miles done. I waited until mid-day and let it warm up somewhat. It was a beautiful day and the path was full of family bike riders, dog walkers and walkers. I’m tired from yesterday and wasn’t sure I had it in me to get this done. It wasn’t easy, but I got it done for a 33.5 mile week. Trying to get back up to 36 mile weeks again after being sick.
Good news is that I’m now finished with the Forteo injections after 19 months! Besides it being nice to not have to do that every day, it will be interesting to see if I feel stronger off of that medication.
Did the indoor tri this morning. Don’t have results yet.) Almost bailed. (MOWC knows!) Swam the same amount of laps as last year. Leaky goggles, swallowed a mouthful of water and had to go back and retouch a wall. Bike (I think) was my best event. Had the proper blend of RPMs and difficulty level. Was feeling weak and groggy before the treadmill run. Tried a cherry/chocolate gel and let’s say the (upset) stomach didn’t appreciate it. Immediately went to bathroom to save the spectators the unpleasant incident. Never tried a gel before and most definitely won’t be doing a chocolate flavor in the future. Only averaged 7:59 pace for twenty minutes which I was ok with considering the swim/bike, gel and not having done any tempo for two - three months. Still waiting for results but I think I won the 40 and over male award. I’ve come to find out there probably won’t be a medal.
In talking to my online RA support group (I’m not betraying CC, I swear !), I found out that one of the common side effects for my upcoming infusion treatment is hairloss.
If I start losing my hair, I’m going to fulfill a longtime dream of bleaching my hair and dying it bright blue. I have always balked at lightening or bleaching my hair but hey, if I’m going to lose it anyway, why not?
There’s some irony here in the possibility of me losing my hair. I have donated probably ten times in my life and finally made the decision last fall to chop it short and leave it short. I suppose the hair gods were not happy with that decision
Congratulations, deb! I hope your foot is better soon.
Glad you got a decent night’s sleep romani. That always feels great.
Lol, ohio.
My husband and I hiked today a scrub in a state reserve. We planned one route, but ended up detouring quite a bit to find trails that were maintained and pointed generally in the right direction. The park’s maps and signage are absolutely terrible, so we had to rely on the handy, dandy compass and our memories of past trips in the general area. Trails were thick dry sugary sand that had been roller-chopped–foot deep slashing; the forest and palmetto under-story were recently burned–even still emitting heat. Tough work! My fitbit tracker app crashed about 7 miles in. The phone and gps mapping apps gave mileage of 11.5 miles or 8.5 miles. I’m not sure how far we went, although it felt more like the 11.5 miles! My legs are tired, and my toes are stained black from the ash. Lovely It was a great day, though.
Sounds like you had quite a competition Ohio! Hope the results are what you anticipate. And if nothing else, you picked up a very practical tip - never try for the first time during an event or competition a sports drink, gel, or other food you’ve not tried during training. I think a whole bunch of us have been there at one time or another. Ya never know how your gut may react until it does, lol! The first and only time I ever drank Gatorade was in a running race many years ago and it took me out of the race much to my chagrin.
^^Yup. Novelty foods in a race are never a good idea, but even knowing that, I’ve stepped on the same rake a couple of times.
Great job, Ohio. Leaky goggles are a distance swimmer’s bad nightmare.
Went for a loooong walk around the area to check out the new construction. Someone is building a house currently listed at over $1M. Wow. The dilapidated doublewide on the neighboring lot adds some rustic charm. Lol. 12,000 steps and counting.
Update. 6th overall. 4- 40 somethings and 1 30 something ahead of me. They looked a lot younger to me! I always feel like I let the geezers down when I let the youngsters beat me. Flashback to 5th grade when I let all of the 5th grade boys down when JoAnn Miller beat me in the boys vs. girls race -50 yd dash.
Did a 30 mile trail ride today on my cross bike. A bit of an adventure. Closed bridge with fences up that I needed to climb over with my bike. Stretches with a ton of mud from all the snow and rain of the last few weeks. My bike and I were a mess by the time I returned. Temperature never went above 43. Can’t wait until the spring like weather later this week so that I can really clean the bike! It was so good to be outside though :).
Yesterday was not very active, I spent 6 hours in the car as we drove over to celebrate FIL’s 84th birthday. We walked to breakfast and back before we headed over there so at least I got enough steps in for the day. But the rest of the day was pretty sedate. I think he enjoyed having everyone there to celebrate, but it was after 11pm when we got home and that’s really late for me. I did not want to get out of bed at 5:15 this morning! It’s going to be warm here this week which will be really nice, but I think we’re in for rain most of the week.
Plantmom-your hike yesterday was quite an adventure! It sounds like it was pretty cool, though.
MOWC-congrats on finishing up on the injections!!!
Ohiopublic-yikes, your tri sounded really tough. Note to self - stay away from chocolate gels!
An indoor tri – now that’s probably the only triathlon I’d consider doing. Ohio, 6th overall sounds good to me!
MoWC, glad you’re done with needles – I’ll be curious to see whether your next bone scan shows improvement. I’m sure in a few years my doc is going to want me to do something.
I wanted to bring up ValSlides again since we don’t have iDad to remind us about them. I think they are an inexpensive and space efficient piece of exercise gear. I keep mine by the bed and do a set or two with them (pushing out with my arms) which are sort of like planks in the evening. For those unfamiliar with them, they are sort of like furniture mover coasters. They slide over carpeting and you can do different exercises with them with your hands or feet on the coasters.
Turns out my corporate team placed 3rd in our division on Saturday. Might have been 3 of 3, but, hey, it’s an award!
