Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

“busdriver11 : this is a women’s triathlon in August: http://whyracingevents.com/event/877/ – not Seattle, but Portland (well, Vancouver, WA). Not indoors but down current in the Columbia. There’s also duathlon-- just bike and run. Not very big, either. I’m entered.”

@dmd77, thank you for the info. Are you doing the duathlon, or the triathlon? I definitely won’t be there, as I am going to support my husband for his big race the same weekend, the Pikes Peak Ascent, almost 8,000 feet of elevation gain, but at least there’s a donut waiting for them at the top!

Think I might not set a specific triathlon as a goal, just need to get into better running shape and learn how to swim first. I had a shock while buying the first bathing suit in decades (author says just get an ugly one piece big enough cover your boobage). For a bit there I thought I was being pranked, that they’d sized all the bathing suits way higher just to mess with people, and then put in one of those carnival mirrors to make you look six inches wider on every part of your body…

I always considered myself not too overweight (128 lb, 5’5"), a little out of shape, but after that scary picture, I need to lose about five tons of body fat before I’m even willing to wear a bathing suit in public!! :frowning:

Bus, be careful with getting too thin! Fat floats better than muscle, and it is also a good heat insulator. I am about your size, and I am sitting on the beach in a two-piece suit, as I hate the feeling of wet fabric against my belly. Anyone who has a problem with it is welcome to spread their towel elsewhere.

What is your swimming level? Dog paddler, pool slowpoke, can-swim-far-but-hate-face-in-water, etc.? Do you need stroke work? In the past, my D’s friends gave Total Immersion swim clinics good reviews. I dunno if they are still around - it has been a while.

Bunsen, I have a feeling that getting too thin isn’t going to be my problem! As much body fat as I have, I should be floating like the Queen Mary, however I am not buoyant at all. Now I can’t imagine wearing a two piece suit, but as much as you work out, you probably have incredible muscle tone, not a scary flabalanche!

I’d say my swimming level is kind of like a pool slowpoke who hates to put her head in the water. I think the first thing is to suck it up and just start spending some time in the pool, and then sign up for lessons. I belong to LA Fitness, and they offer them. What is a total immersion swim clinic?

They throw you in at the deep end? Har har.

Looked them up - still around, but it looks like they are now focused on perfection of technique and stroke efficiency. Probably not the best place to start.

I am no model, but on this beach, there is hardly any one-piece suit in sight. I would be drawing more attention to me if I wore a one-piece suit! Speaking of swimsuits, polyester is your best bet against pool chlorine and other oxidizers.

Bunsen- I wear 2 piece suits, too. My 63 year old middle has seen better days, but I looked around the beach in Florida and was pretty horrified. So- I felt a lot better.

Ain’t no way I’m getting in a 2 piece. More power to you all!

Sometimes I think, though…if those really old pot bellied guys can wear those little speedo suits, then we should be able to get away with anything!

I keep threatening to start wearing again those little speedos I wore when I was on the diving team in college and my wife and daughter keep threatening not to be seen with me in public, lol.

OMG, here is my finest Fitbit cinderelling moment to date! I dragged Mr. out of the room for a short walk on the beachside path - the evening was just too nice to waste it on indoor activities. My Fitbt is synched with the computer that is still showing the PDT, so the official midnight was going to happen during our walk. I noticed that I was very close to 17,000 steps when Mr. spotted a cat on the boardwalk! The cat plopped on the ground and signaled to us that she really needed a backrub… Aaack. Two minutes of precious walking time wasted on motionless cat petting! I walked as fast as I could after that to make sure I reached the step target… Because my phone is so old I cannot load the Fitbit app on it, I had to wait until we got back to check my dashboard - I was so relieved to see that it showed 17,002 steps! Plus, I now have a head start on the next day’s steps - 2,000.

LOL. You should have picked up the cat and carried it while you walked!
Early flight to friggin’ Iowa, so did a quick 1.2 streak mile on the dreadmill. Maybe will have a chance late this afternoon for more- but can’t count on it.

Back on the treadmill today but more walking than running. I’ll see what my ankle has to say.

Nice walk with the pups this morning. Mr. Sabaray is a morning grouch so has not been joining us - the pups know that usually means an extended walk which they really enjoy.

FallGirl, I thought of you when I saw this podcast - I actually listened as it was interesting to me for a variety of reasons. There is a section on transitioning to the road from the treadmill that might be helpful to you - I can’t say for sure as it was a section I didn’t listen closely to. But it might be worth a listen. Ignore the title! There’s lots of good stuff worth a listen!

Signed up for MCM yesterday with my deferral from last year. I can do it. My run yesterday was a good one morale wise – it’s amazing what a difference the right person to run with can make. I don’t want to run with people who talk about how slow we are - I want to run with people who love running, no matter what the pace.

No pie yesterday - Bunsen, I have to say yours sounds the best!

Sabaray- isn’t that the truth? Good attitude! You certainly can do it!

^^Is that the Marine Corp Marathon??? My runner friend from Chicago did that last year and LOVED it. She just got denied in the NYC M lottery so was thinking about a MCM repeat.

It is, abasket - between injury and family issues I just couldn’t do it last year, which was disappointing, but I just wasn’t there mentally or physically. Physically I feel stronger but need to build up time on my feet again. Good thing I have a while!

@busdriver11 – well, you are both taller than me and weigh less than me, so I don’t understand why you’re worried about how you look in a bathing suit. I think I look pretty good. Most of the people who swim at my local pools (community pools) are MUCH heavier than I am!

I’m entered in the women’s sprint triathlon.

I just ate an entire bag of that great popcorn they sell at Midway Airport in Chicago. Caramel corn and cheese mixed. This trip is off to a rocky start. On the plane to Iowa after a ridiculous layover. I did do some walking.

If I had to fly to Iowa on a Tuesday after the stupid spring forward time shift and at 6:30 am and with a layover, I would eat the entire popcorn stand!!

Yes, for a moment I thought about picking up and carrying that cat, but even a very chill and “user friendly” stray is still a cat. Glad I made the target number! It is not even 7 am, but I already have 3,000 steps!
