Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

Haha… I’m in the opposite boat. The crappy weather has been very helpful with helping me work on my end of semester papers.

I just heard from the new doctor and I have an appointment on Tuesday! I can’t believe he was able to get me in so quick. Wish me luck

The magic of networking. Good luck!

Got my 10,000 steps and 65 floors in mostly by taking a walk through the city during lunch.

dmd77, I know exactly how you felt when that comment was made. When I first decided to reduce my body weight by about 20%, as I achieved my goal, both friends and acquaintances assumed that I had a serious illness and broached the subject with trepidation. Then, as others observed my disciplined eating, I was referred to with questionable humor as behaving like an anorexic 12 year old girl. The most vocal in attempting to cajole me were those who were in serious need of making lifestyle changes or who had engaged in deprevation dieting with the very predictable yo-yoing that occurred.

Can I really just say I don’t want to go to work today? There were snow flurries this morning. Blech.

Fun circuit class this morning with a new instructor - very different, but good for me as it incorporated a lot of stretching - a lot of down dog transitions and strength training. I found it much easier than previous classes so it was either easier or I’m getting stronger. I’d prefer to believe the latter but it’s probably the former! I was talking with the instructor after class - her mother is my age and doesn’t exercise at all. What I like about the studio is that the emphasis is on health, not appearance. There are some overweight women, but they are exercising and strong. No anorexics. It’s all about feeling good in your own skin, doing what you can do and feeling good about it. No judgment, no competition - kind of like our group!

^^That’s awesome about your class Sabaray.

I’m in that same camp about not wanting to go to work today…let’s call it an early Friday! The weather here awful - there is actually accumulating snow in the forecast for this weekend - I refuse to shovel it!

My back has been a little sore - possibly from all the painting last weekend - last night I decided to try a 30 minute pilates workout on Amazon Prime - I love the Gymbox series. I know the series is a couple years old - maybe 2013 - it was nicely challenging. But one thing she used was a pilates “ring” - is that a typical item used in pilates???

Off to Pilates now … I do reformer, not mat, but yes, some instructors do use the rings in Pilates, as well as balls (small ball or a large ball weighted with sand). Where I now go, I aim for 3 classes a week but the instructors are all different so it seems to be personal instructor preference whether they use a lot of “toys” or not.

Have been working 12 plus hour days all week so I am very behind on the thread. Trying to walk/ run/ yoga in early AM. Ran just under a mile outside today ( my farthest outside distance yet)! And I found out that a friend has signed up for the training program and another friend will most likely join us.

^ Glad you’ll have the company FallGirl!

Did you see/read this? Very interesting! (take the ponytail off this woman and she looks like MOWC to me!!!)
Swim. Bike. Cheat??? http://www.nytimes.com/2016/04/10/sports/julie-miller-ironman-triathlon-cheat.html?smid=tw-nytimes&smtyp=cur&_r=0

I had a nice easy 3 mile run this morning with Back on My Feet. Tomorrow morning is a 10 Miler, the last in a series of training races. Since I’m tapering for the marathon on the 16th, I will just run tomorrow’s 10 miles at a comfortable pace and not try for a great time.

Miserable weather here. This too shall pass and eventually spring will arrive and hopefully stick around.

abasket - I can believe all that painting would give you a sore back! I hope the pilates helped with the sore muscles.

sabaray - I am certain you are getting stronger!

abasket, I’ve been working with my Pilates trainer for over a year now and as we’ve progressed, we’ve added more props. I wish I was better at explaining things, but I’ve used the ring with both Reformer and mat and have used the balls with Reformer/Cadillac/Wunda chair. It definitely adds a new level of challenge as you’re applying pressure to the ring (it has some moderate give/flexibility). So at times you might have your feet through the ring and apply pressure outward, or squeeze it between your thighs, or use it for upper body exercise. It definitely adds a new dimension to the “base” exercise. Hope that makes sense. It also helps me focus on keeping the correct posture - it you’re holding the ring straight ahead of you while seated for an extended series, it’s really, really, really hard to lose your alignment. It’s a lot tougher than it looks, if you’re doing it right.

I have a feeling your comfortable pace is my very best race pace, C3Baker! You are doing great, FallGirl! Having friends and a group to help you along makes a huge difference.

Explained perfectly well Sabaray and that is exactly the type of movements the instructor was using the ring for!

If anyone has Amazon Prime, check out the GymBox videos - beginning, intermediate, advanced level workouts available. Perfect for that day when you can’t/don’t want to go to the gym or weather is sucky and you can’t get outside. I’m cheap and only do the free ones, but I can choose from yoga, kickboxing, pilates, core work, strength training, step, etc.

abasket - thanks for the recommendation for the GymBox videos. I have Amazon Prime and never take advantage of the video options. We have plenty of sucky weather that would make doing a workout at home a good idea! It’s great to have a recommendation of good workouts to look for.

Wow, thanks, abasket, I have to check it out. I have Prime (or I shall say my cats have Prime, because what Amazon brings is mostly cat stuff!), but I have not ventured into its video library.

I wish I could send you some of the gorgeous sunshine that woke me up this morning!

Have you seen this article?

http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/04/er-docs-get-heart-rate-info-from-fitbit-save-patients-life/

Pretty interesting that the guy’s heartrate information from his Fitbit was helpful for the ER docs to determine what route to go in treating his seizure.

Wow, C3Baker, that is amazing and totally cool.

Sabaray- your class sounds great! Our group here is doing so well and learning so much.

That picture does look sort of like me!

Had to start running in pitch dark here in CA. Had a headlamp. Route was a big climb out of the resort and then rolling hills on a hard dirt path by a road that overlooked the Pacific Ocean. It was gorgeous once I could see it! 5.1 miles done!

LOL, she sort of does look like MOf WC! Except there is a major difference: we all know how MOfWC feels about cheaters! B-)

Naw, you are far more attractive!

About to hit yoga class now. Miserable weather here - flurries and dreary. It’s punishment for the fact that we didn’t really have winter. And of course I left my coat at home thinking I would be fine in a sweatshirt over my workout outfit. What an idiot!! Namaste!

NOTHING lower than a running cheat!

Headed to Florida for a week of R&R tomorrow. Running and Relaxation. And biking, some core, stretching, swimming, eating, drinking, etc.
