It’s sunny and heating up quickly (to 90), but no walking, running; nada yet because I did something foolish in the name of vanity. As a consequence of all the walking through ashy, sandy trails; and running the old bones on the pavement, my toes–toenails to be specific–look like they belong not to Cinderella but one of the step-sisters. Today I decided to attempt to disguise the ugly truth with a pedicure. It’s been ages, probably even years. Sigh–the results of this spa treatment have helped appearances greatly, but I realize I can not put on socks and shoes for hours and hours. Foiled by vanity, oh vanity
Enjoy Ohio - perfect time to leave Ohio with the weather we up north are about to get!
Lunchtime spin class and then added on 2 miles around the track. I signed up for our wellness program at work (not much to it - but most people don’t bother) - got back from the gym and had a complimentary women’s dri fit shirt that I actually like as a bonus! Yeah for freebies that you actually like!!!
Have fun, Ohio!
Our wellness week is next week. We have our “5K” Wednesday afternoon. Last year it was 2.8 miles and the “winner” was not happy with me for pointing that out. Unfortunately for me, he’s a Sr. VP!
So bothered by what just happened in yoga!
Teacher was fine, class was fine, I was fine.
A man - about 30 - brought his mother - about 50 - in and they took the class together with the rest of us. This lady must have been in a physical accident, because she has no strength. She can’t get herself from being on her back to sitting up without assistance. She couldn’t get downward dog and collapsed. She couldn’t sit straight with legs out without having to rest back on arms for support. At the end of class, she couldn’t pull herself to standing even with her son’s help, and had to crawl to the wall and pull herself up. Meanwhile the son was oblivious and just went about doing the moves. The teacher was concerned about her safety and it was an unfair position to put her in since this lady was well beyond needing modifications for poses. I was so upset feeling bad for this lady and I was angry at the son for putting her in that position.
This lady needed one on one physical therapy with a trained professional so she could transition from sitting to standing to lying down safely, not so she could sit and watch us do crow pose and dancer’s pose. It was just really upsetting. Poor lady. I talked to the teacher afterwards and she was uncomfortable because she was afraid if she assisted her she could have made things worse and hurt her and then what. Just really sad and upsetting. She got nothing out of the class other than feeling bad.
^^^Awful. Wonder who prodded who to go to the class? Did someone recommend it for her? Gosh, I think if I were her I would have been in tears and would have quit after a few minutes!
The teacher thinks that the son just wanted to go to yoga and dragged her along. She too was upset because it out her off her game and she had to worry about this lady’s safety.
I can certainly see a physical therapist saying to a person in her condition “oh, yoga would be good therapy for you” but it would need to be individually taught yoga by someone with a physical therapy background, not this kind of group class.
That sounds like a really bad situation, Pizzagirl. I feel sorry for her.
I have gone to PT, and I cannot imagine a PT would say anything like “yoga would be good for you” to a person in her condition! She must have gotten that idea from her friends, from reading crap on the web, etc. How horrible for the teacher to watch this poor woman suffering.
i could see a 1:1 restorative yoga class possibly being beneficial to her, but not CorePower group yoga. Much like I could see moving her limbs in a hot tub might be beneficial to her, but not FluidRunning. Or a walk around the block might be helpful, but not Couchto5k!
That sounds cruel, PG and uncomfortable for everyone involved. Maybe the teacher was right and it was her son’s idea. Sheesh.
Another small victory today! I’ve been working for weeks on learning to breathe on BOTH sides while swimming freestyle (I’m so old I almost wrote “Australian crawl”). I used to be able to do it (back then I could do flip turns, too) but had completely lost the ability. This morning I finally nailed the timing. I can’t go fast, and I can only do a few lengths before I want to revert to all-right breathing instead of alternating sides, but it now feels like that’s just a matter of practice. I’m relieved–I really feel like anything you do only in one direction is an invitation to muscle strains. (As for the flip turns, I worked out that timing, then realized that doing them repeatedly made me queasy (I have otoliths), so I’ve worked on a fast flat turn (in both directions, depending on which hand hits the wall first). That’s coming along nicely, and is nearly as fast as my swim buddy’s flip turns. And she’s fast.)
Good for you! I took private swim lessons a few years ago (I can swim, but can always improve technique) and would like to do it again! I probably just breathe on one side, come to think of it!
Me too, one sided breather.
People think yoga is yoga. No idea! What a turkey her son is!
Long pup walk this morning. Should have been a running day, but today was my day for a marathon shopping trip trying on many, many clothes for our upcoming trip to Asia. This sort of activity is ALWAYS best done when H is away, so today was the day. One of the stores I stopped at was LL Bean. (Found several things.) When I got home I went on their website to check for a couple things not in the store. @abasket – they now have the Fitbit Alta!! Alas, I just spent all my Bean Bucks. By the time I accumulate more, perhaps my Charge HR will have died and I’ll be able to justify the Alta. (Or, more likely, Fitbit will have come out with a new model.)
On a totally unrelated note – I just received notification that my poem was chosen as a winner in the Cambridge Sidewalk Poetry Contest! This is the 2nd year of the competition. Winning poems are “engraved” into cement and placed in a sidewalk somewhere in the city. Poems are necessarily short with a strict limit on characters per line, and, of course, have to be “G” rated. I entered on a total whim.
So cool about the poem CBB!! I have great respect for writers!
And the Alta - now perhaps I have two options for replacing mine- surprisingly, the last 3 days my charge has worked - we’ll see what happens after I charge tonight.
Wow, CBB!! So cool. You will have to PM us the location of your poem, so we can make a stop when we walk/run through that area when we visit!
Congrats CBB! What great news!
Dmd- good job on the breathing. I breathe to the left. I can do both sides if I have to, but I don’t like it.
CBB- congratulations!
Is that Boston/Cambridge? I’ll be there for a quickie in May!
Another day of moving heavy stuff and packing boxes–getting my steps from walking between the house and the storage pod. Took the dog for a short walk on a bike path–probably a few miles.
PG–how old was the woman in yoga? I can’t imagine a physical therapist recommending to someone who is as physically week as you describe that he/she should do power yoga. I think relax and restore would have been difficult for the woman to do. She would be a candidate for chair yoga. Too bad you can’t suggest that to the son. He sounds clueless.
