Diet/Exercise/Health/Wellness Support Thread

You’re an inspiration for hills and so much more, sabaray. I’m off for a short run. It’s already about 75 and sort of muggy.

Hey, a stampeding turtle always outruns a sleeping bunny! Great job, sabaray! Those who make comments out of their cars and harass runners or bicyclists deserve a special place in hell. I am so lucky to live in a very quiet area with miles of 25-mph and lower (schools!) speed limit roads, and only the people who live here and their guests make it into our boring neighborhood.

That’s what is so great about this thread- we inspire each other!

Michael- how dare you drive to your workout!

Over 20k steps each day in Florida. No hills on the beach thank God. Running, biking (1speed beach cruiser) and walking. Saw a bald eagle yesterday!

Warm weather definitely puts you in an exercise frame of mind. I have been dropping hints to my wife of a 1-2 month stay next winter. I could manage it work-wise and head back north when needed. I know my running would improve. Have been reading up on altitude training. Am also thinking of spending 2-4 weeks out west next year prior to senior olympics. My wife won’t let me buy the portable altitude tent that you can set up above your bed to simulate high altitude conditions.

LOL, Ohio. That would be lovely in your bedroom! 1-2 months escape to Florida would be nice!

I got the injection in my eye for my still slightly swollen retina. I am SO over this eye stuff! I was a big baby about the injection, so they gave me double numbing gel, and I didn’t feel it at all. It hurts now, though, and it broke a blood vessel so I have a big red bubble in my eye, which will spread to cover the whole eye. Lovely. I am thankful for all the technology, and I shouldn’t whine about this minor pain, but shots in the eye are scary.

MOfWC, yikes. I worked at a co that was focused on ocular health and I learned more than I needed about eyeballs. The eye is the Fort Knox of the human organs; it is designed to be impermeable, hence the need for injections. I feel your pain. Hope the pain and the redness go away soon.

Right there with you, MOWC - they would have had to tie me to the chair. I don’t know that I could do it. You are tough! Hope it feels better soon.

Has anyone ever heard of the virtual races through “Gone For A Run”??? http://www.goneforarun.com/virtual-races/

Don’t think this is for me - not sure that I love the medals, clothing and stuff but interesting idea. One of our medical students shared it with me this morning - she has a BUSY schedule but likes to run - she enjoys this method - it works for her!

The virtual run thing has really taken off. I’m generally not a fan, but I am doing the 2016 in 2016 thing. I think the virtual races are real money makers, and they are good for people who are remote or can’t do normally scheduled events or don’t want all the company!

Hello to all! (I was going to type “Good Morning,” but just realized it’s afternoon. Successful field trip to the Apple Store with my father, who did, indeed, buy an iPad. Then a fun dinner last night.

Because my dad was an overnight guest, I did not go to the gym this morning – and if I don’t do my workout in the morning, I don’t do it. Will do a pup walk later. Speaking of the pup – she was more wacko last night than usual. She ate about 1/4 of one of my socks (stole it out of the laundry basket) AND started gnawing on my father’s leather glasses case, which he must have left on the couch where he was sitting. I’m sure she’s fine, but it’s convenient that we’re headed to the vet a little later today.

I’m doing a virtual race across the US on http://racery.com. At the rate I’m going, I may get to California in a couple years!

Thank you all again for the swim options. There’s an Athleta store right by me that I’ll check out!

Bad news today. I’m in for my infusion treatment but it looks like I’m probably not going to be able to get it. My pulse rate is very, very high and there were some other worrying things. Waiting to hear from the head doctors.

Boo… a step forward and three back.

mowc, I’m so sorry you’re having eye issues. They sound scary just reading about it.

MOWC - the eye injection sounds dreadful! Will you be able to run tomorrow?

abasket - I am enjoying your other thread. Lots of good discussion.

Hi All, I was reading another thread and someone encouraged others to join this thread, so here I am. My goal is to lose weight, gain more energy and transform the way my family eats. Up until now, my and my family’s food choices have been made up of a lot of processed foods. I’ve emptied our pantry and fridge of all “junk food” and am excited to get started on a healthy lifestyle. In doing this, I’m sort of stumped on some ideas for healthy snacks for my kids. Do any of you have advice on healthy snacks for my teen and tween? They are used to a sweet snack (things like granola bars), so I’m not sure how to wean them of that. I’d love to get any ideas of things that would be “yummy” to the teen/kid palate. Thanks!

Welcome, khmamma! We can give you lots of support and advice.

Thanks, all. I survived! I am running our company 5K this afternoon. Dr. said it was fine. The main problem is that my eyes are hugely dilated and I can’t see well… Hopefully by 4:00 they will be better.

Welcome!!! Do they eat nuts? The favorites around here are KIND bars. They are sweet but only have 5 g of added sugar per bar. How about fruit? Do they eat cheese? Grapes and cheese cubes, apples and PB, bananas and a little chocolate pudding for dipping…

I bought a KIND bar yesterday in our break room after lunch. They are SO good. Not cheap, though.

Thanks @MomofWildChild and @BunsenBurner  I will give the Kind bars a try, since I’m headed to Costco tonight and I think they carry them there. Luckily, neither kid has any food allergies. They do eat cheese, but probably too much (they tend to have larger portions of it), so I’m trying to cut down on cheese. Fruit and PB, pudding, etc. sounds really good. Thanks!

Welcome Khmamma!
I’ll second the KIND bars - they can be expensive, but if you happen to belong to Costco they sell them in box that has like 18 or something for a better price. IMO, though, one bar per serving!- wouldn’t recommend that anyone eat more than one at a time - pair it with something else like an apple or a banana.

I good thing to do for kids is to have “grab it food” - so KIND bars, ready use grab veggie sticks and ranch dip or hummus, whole wheat pita and hummus or PB or cheese to melt in the middle. No processed cheese!

You can make your own granola which is great with skim milk for a snack or sprinkled over whole milk yogurt and fresh fruit. You can buy whole milk yogurt in large containers and spoon out just how much you want - more economical than the little containers.

There are certainly worse things than the granola/fruit bars. But yeah, would be great to widen their horizons with more choices that include dairy, raw fruit, raw veggies, nuts and beans.

Also, your kids are old enough to suggest and explore some new choices. Take them with you to the grocery store for the purpose of picking out some snacks. If they are willing, start reading labels.

Hummus and cut up pita, carrots, red bell peppers. Costco is a great source!
